Site CS/0260 Settlement: Sudbrook
Summary Key characteristics Flat levels on the coast of the Severn estuary including the historic site of Sudbrook Camp with Sudbrook Chapel to the east by Sudbrook Point and a disused paper mill. Mature poplar plantation to the south west and pasture to the north west with irregular medium sized fields with outgrown hedges. Semi-rural settlement to the west is an anomaly and does not comprise a formal settlement edge adjacent to the area. Sudbrook Camp is used for informal recreation with a football pitch and public footpaths run east and west along the coast . The poplars are a major element in the view from Sudbrook west and from Harold's House SAM and church at Portskewett to the north forming part of a view corridor towards the Severn estuary and the whole coastal edge is highly visible from the second Severn Crossing. The area is in floodplain to the west and the Gwent Levels Landscape of Outstanding Historic Interest covers the south western part. The area is on the edge of Severn Estuary RAMSAR, SPA and SSSI. Landscape sensitivity High/medium The area has high/medium sensitivity as Sudbrook Camp is of high sensitivity and the area to the west is on the levels floodplain with reens, provides a green gap between Caldicot and Sudbrook, provides a view corridor south from Portskewett church towards the Severn estuary and the whole coastal edge is highly visible from the second Severn Crossing. The paper mill site has lower sensitivity as a brownfield site with detractive buildings and spaces. Housing capacity Medium The area has no capacity for housing to the east and west on LLCAs S2 and S3 but has capacity on the paper mill site, preferably avoiding the floodplain and providing it respects and complements the SAM to the east.
