With the Redskins trailing the Miami Dolphins 17-13 in the fourth quarter, the Redskins gave the ball to Riggins on 4th and 1. Riggins took the handoff and dashed 43 yards for the go-ahead score. DEXTER MANLEY One of the most colorful and talented players to ever don a Washington Redskins jersey, Dexter Manley was an imposing player in every sense of the word. A feared pass-rusher, Manley was nicknamed the “Secretary of Defense,” and holds the Redskins single season sack record and career sack leader. Manley was also a key contributor in the Redskins Super Bowl XVII and XXII victories. The name John Riggins, invokes a feeling of grit and grace. Possessing the physical ability to run through an opponent, and an imposing NY Jets (1971-1975) personality to match, Riggins was truly a contrast in motion and a Washington Redskins (1976-1979, 1981-1985) player unlike any other in the NFL. John Riggins started his football career at Kansas University where he surpassed Gale Sayer’s career rushing record. He was drafted by Enshrined into the Pro Football the New York Jets in the first round, sixth pick overall, of the 1971 NFL Draft. Riggins played for the New York Jets from 1971 to 1975, Hall of Fame in 1992 where he was twice named Jets’ Most Valuable Player and became the first player in franchise history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season. In 1976 Riggins signed as a free agent with the Washington Super Bowl Champion (XVII) Redskins. While with the Redskins, Riggins helped lead the team to Super Bowl MVP (XVII) their first Super Bowl victory in 1983. It was Super Bowl XVII where Riggins’ legacy was immortalized; with the Redskins trailing the Miami Dolphins 17-13 in the fourth quarter, the Redskins gave the ball to Riggins on 4th and 1. Riggins also rushed over 1,000 yards five times in his career and over 100 yards in 35 games, including a then- Washington Redskins Ring of Fame record six in the post-season. Riggins retired following the 1985 season and is still the all-time leading rusher in Washington Redskins 70 Greatest Redskins franchise history. Washington Redskins Career Rushing Yards Record (7,422) Riggins was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992 and Washington Redskins Career Rushing the Redskins Ring of Fame in 1990. DEXTER MANLEY CAREER HIGHLIGHTS ne of the most colorful and talented players to ever don a OWashington Redskins jersey, Dexter Manley was an imposing player in every sense of the word. The mere mention of his name Washington Redskins (1981-1989) conjures up images of helpless NFL quarterbacks being pummeled by Phoenix Cardinals (1990) the massive defensive end. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1991) Manley was drafted in the fifth round, 119th overall, of the 1981 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins, where he would play for nine seasons. A feared pass-rusher, Manley was nicknamed the “Secretary of Defense,” and holds the Redskins single season sack record (18.5 2X Super Bowl Champion (XVII, XXII) in 1986) and Redskins career sack leader (91). Manley was also a key contributor in the Redskins Super Bowl XVII and XXII victories. During his career, Manley was named a Pro-Bowler, an All-Pro, and the All-Pro Defensive Lineman of the year. Additionally, Manley was enshrined into the Redskins Ring of Honor and named one of the Seventy Greatest Redskins. Pro Bowl (1986) 1st Team All-Pro (1986) NFL Defensive Player of the Year (1986) After his NFL career ended, he revealed that he was functionally illiterate, despite having studied at Oklahoma State University for four years. He sacked illiteracy when he successfully completed all of the reading courses at the Washington Lab School, one of the leading schools for children and adults with learning disabilities. Upon Washington Redskins Ring of Fame completion of the Washington Lab School Manley testified before 70 Greatest Redskins Congress about his educational journey and battle with illiteracy. Washington Redskins (1981-1993) Jacoby played his collegiate football at the University of Louisville. Following his senior season he went undrafted in the 1981 NFL draft but signed as a rookie free agent with the Washington Redskins. Jacoby’s foray into the NFL started off ominously, as Hall of Fame Finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016 coach Joe Gibbs mistook him for a defensive lineman, then after learning that Jacoby was slated to play on the offensive side of the ball, chastised legendary offensive line coach Joe Bugel’s decision to sign an 18th offensive lineman for training camp. It didn’t take long for Jacoby to prove that he was one of the best offensive lineman on the team, starting at left tackle as a rookie. Gibbs would later go on 3X Super Bowl Champion (XVII, XXII, XXVI) to say that “Jake was one of the best things that ever happened to us. Shows you what I know about a prospect.” One of only three players to start for all of Joe Gibbs four Super Bowl 4X Pro Bowl Selection (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986) teams and a key member of the famed “Hogs” offensive line, Jacoby 2X 1st Team All-Pro (1983, 1984) helped lead the Redskins to three Super Bowl victories (Super Bowl NFL’s 1980s All-Decade Team XVII vs. Miami Dolphins, Super Bowl XXII vs. Denver Broncos and Super Bowl XXVI vs. Buffalo Bills). During his NFL career, Jacoby started at every offensive line position except Center, earning All-Pro honors four times (1983-84, 1987), All-NFC twice (1983-84), and Second-Team All-NFC twice (1985-86). Jacoby was also elected to four straight Pro Washington Redskins Ring of Fame Bowls (1984-1987), was named as one of the 70 Greatest Redskins, 70 Greatest Redskins was selected to the NFL’s 1980’s All-Decade Team. Jacoby retired following the 1993 season having started 148 games for the Washington Redskins.

But the organization’s glorious past dates back almost 60 years and includes five world championships overall and some of the most innovative people and ideas the game has ever known. From George Preston Marshall to Jack Kent Cooke, from Vince Lombardi to Joe Gibbs, from Sammy Baugh to John Riggins, plus the NFL’s first fight song, marching band and radio network, the Redskins can be proud of an impressive professional football legacy. George Preston Marshall was awarded the inactive Boston franchise in July 1932. He originally named the team “Braves” because it used Braves Field, home of the National League baseball team. When the team moved to Fenway Park in July 1933, the name was changed to Redskins. A bizarre situation occurred in 1936, when the Redskins won the NFL Eastern division championship but Marshall, unhappy with the fan support in Boston,moved the championship game against Green Bay to the Polo Grounds in New York. Their home field advantage taken away by their owner, the Redskins lost. Not surprisingly, the Redskins moved to Washington, D.C., for the 1937 season. Games were played in Griffith Stadium with the opener on September 16, 1937, being played under flood lights. That year,Marshall created an official marching band and fight song, both firsts in the National Football League. That season also saw the debut of “Slinging Sammy” Baugh, a quarterback from Texas Christian who literally changed the offensive posture of pro football with his forward passing in his 16-season career.

Joining these four finalists, are 11 other modern-era players and two players nominated earlier by the Hall of Fame’s Senior Committee. The Senior Committee nominees, announced in August 2006, are former Cleveland Browns guard Gene Hickerson and Detroit Lions tight end Charlie Sanders. The other modern-era player finalists include defensive ends Fred Dean and Richard Dent; guards Russ Grimm and Bob Kuechenberg; punter Ray Guy; wide receivers Art Monk and Andre Reed; linebackers Derrick Thomas and Andre Tippett; cornerback Roger Wehrli; and tackle Gary Zimmerman. To be elected, a finalist must receive a minimum positive vote of 80 percent. This will mark the first time in Redskins history that fans can vote for the Greatest Redskins of All Time. A blue ribbon panel identified 80 greatest Redskins finalists who represent every position on the team, as well as Pro Football Hall of Famers, members enshrined in the team’s Ring of Fame, team record holders and dozens of others who have worn the burgundy and gold.
