Who Are We?

LAUTECH Nanotechnology Research Group (NANO+) which was formed on September 4, 2014 to advance the course of research in the multidisciplinary subject of Nanotechnology at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Nigeria (www.lautechnanotech.com) is a formidable research team. The pioneer members were propelled by quest to conduct meaningful research in this area, and also to train manpower, thereby putting LAUTECH in a vantage position in Nanotechnology 1 Research in Nigeria. The group has the vision of transforming LAUTECH to a centre of excellence in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Nigeria.

The group has drawn membership from dedicated young scholars from different Departments within the University; with advanced training in Molecular Biology, Industrial Microbiology, Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Toxicology, Biochemistry, Materials Engineering, Renewable Energy and Nanofabrication. Since its formation, members of the group have published more than seventy (70) quality research outcomes focusing on nanotechnology in reputable Journals and books (http://lautechnanotech.com/files/publication.php).

Members of the group are Prof. A. Lateef, Prof. M.A. Azeez, Prof. T.A. Yekeen, Dr. T.B. Asafa, Dr. I.C. Oladipo, Dr. E.A. Adebayo, Prof. Y.K. Sanusi, Prof. M.O. Durowoju, Dr. O. Adedokun, Dr. J.A. Badmus, and Dr. M.K. Awodele that spread across the three existing sub-divisions viz Biological/Biomedical, Physical/Chemical, and Engineering and Technology cluster groups.

The research group which is headed by Prof. A. Lateef of the Department of Pure and Applied Biology, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso successfully organized a National Workshop on Synthesis, Characterization and Applications of Nanoparticles (21-24 August, 2017) http://lautechnanotech.com/files/report.php), in which Africa was called upon to invest in nanotechnology to aid development (https://www.scidev. net/sub-saharan-africa/r-d/news/nanotech-africa-prioritised.html). The group also organized Workshop and International Conference on “Nanotechnology for Sustainable Development: Prospects for Africa” (23-25 October, 2018)(https://www.lautechnanotech.com/files/report.php) ,where the Minister of Science and Technology underscored the importance of nanotechnology to nation building(https://guardian.ng/techno logy/minister-urges-increased-research-in-nanotechnology/). Some papers presented at the 2018 conference were published in a special edition of Science Focus Focus (Nigeria)(https://sciencefocuslautech.org/new.php?slug =volume23).

Furthermore the 3rd workshop/conference on nanotechnology was held between 22 and 24 October, 2019. The conference which was attended by more than 150 participants had its theme as “Nanotechnology Applications in Africa: Opportunities and Constraints” where the call was made for the prioritization of nanotechnology research (https://businessday.ng/education/article/lautech-urges-tetfund-to-prioritize- funding-nanotechnology-research-in-nigeria/), passage of policy on nanotechnology

2 (https://guardian.ng/news/fg-urged-to-fast-track-passage-implementation-of-n ational-policy-on-nanotechnology/) and establishment of centres of excellence in nanotechnology (https://tribuneonlineng.com/lautech-demands -centre-of-excellence-in-nanotechnology/). Forty-four papers among those presented at the conference were published IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering (UK)(https://iopscience.iop.org/issue/1757 -899X/805/1) which is indexed in Scopus in June 2020.

The 4th conference of the group tagged ‘Human Existence and Resource Utilization: Extending the Frontiers through Nanotechnology’ was held online on 27-28 October, 2020 due to restrictions of COVID-19 pandemic. The conference drew participants from Nigeria, South Africa, Sierra Leone, India, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, China, Sweden and the United Kingdom from more than fifty institutions and government agencies. At the conference, the flagship journal of the group, Nano Plus: Science and Technology of Nanomaterials (https://stnanojournal.org/) was unveiled by the Minister of Science and Technology, who was represented by Mr. Mfon E.J Bassey, Director, Chemical Technology, FMST, Abuja. The conference underscored the relevance of nanotechnology to achieving SDG (https://guardian.ng/news/nanotechnology-is-a-veritable-tool-to-achieving-sd gs-say-scholars/). Abstracts of presentations at the conference have been published (https://doi.org/10.48187/stnanomat.2021.1.002) .
