Purpose / Course Description: Aquatic Sports is designed to empower students with the knowledge and opportunities to become more proficient in aquatic movements and sports. These activities will lead students to live a more healthy and active lifestyle. This course involves a variety of aquatic sports, including water , , fun swims, cooperative games, rescue skills, enhanced skills, skills, , scuba and other water sports. All classes will be held at the Middle Tyger YMCA .

Prerequisite: P.E.I or ROTC Class Materials: Towel, personal toiletries, goggles and a bathing suit (Guys: no blue jean shorts, Girls: one piece or active two piece…nothing that ties or that is too revealing)

Aquatic Sports Grading System: Students begin each 9-week grading period with a dressing out / participation grade of 100. Students lose 6 points from that grade each time they do not dress out or participate in the day’s activities. 1st 9 weeks 2nd 9 weeks Dressing Out / Participation – 80% Dressing Out /Participation – 80% Partner Project - 20% “Your Day” Project – 20% Final Exam – 20%

Lifeguarding will receive a different grading system from their YMCA Instructor, Crystal Sharpe

Curriculum Content Standards in Physical Education

A physically educated person… Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity. Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness, Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings Standard 6: Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self expression and/or social interaction.

Participation Grading Scale 1st offense: -6 points and warning 2nd offense: -6 points and parent contact 3rd offense: -6 points and guidance referral 4th offense: -6 points and office referral Subsequent offenses: -6 points Inappropriate behavior may result in a loss of pool time. A loss of pool time will be a reduction in that students’ participation grade.

Participation: You OBVIOUSLY have to be dressed out fully to participate each day. If you are not dressed out, you will be required to assist in the daily activities. If you refuse to participate when not dressed out, a detention will be assigned … and then you will be expected to begin participating immediately at that time or be referred to your grade principal. You must participate!

Excuses: ONLY medical excuses are accepted in order for a student to not dress out or possibly not participate in class. If you have an extended medical note which does not allow you to participate, you may be dropped from this course.

General Rules:  You must be on the bus when the tardy bell rings or you will be considered tardy. After three tardies you will receive a principal’s referral and on all other subsequent tardies.  You are responsible for any equipment that is misused such as inappropriately throwing or kicking equipment. At no time should any equipment come in contact with the ceiling, lights or windows in at the YMCA.  Be respectful and aware of others in the pool who are not in our class, especially the elderly and children.
