From The Bath Chronicle of Thu 12 July 1888 p3: ALSO OF “SAD BOATING DISASTER ON THE AVON ELLEN, WIDOW OF THE ABOVE THREE PERSONS DROWNED, WHO ENTERED INTO REST APRIL 28TH 1928, AGED 92. A gloom was cast iver the city on Saturday on its becomg known that a “SO HE GIVETH HIS BELOVED SLEEP.” fatal boating accident occurred on teh Avon, near Maynard;s boat- house, on Friday night, by which the son of a local tradsman and two young women, assistants at Messrs. Gardiner’s drapery establishment, lost their lives while two young men noarrowly escaped the same fate. The night was pitch dark when the accident happened, and to add to the difficulties attending the attempts to save the occupants of the boat, a strong current was running, the recent heavy rains having considerably swollen the river. It appears that at half-paast eight three youn men, named William Isaacs, aged 20 (a son of Mr. Isaacs, hatter, Stall-street, and an assistant of Mr. Routley, jeweller, Bridge-street), ...” (There follows a long article and an article on the inquest.)
