Introduction

and bestowed on the Duchy of Cornwall, the Prince of Wales, in right of the said Duchy, being lord of the manor. The Church is pleasantly situated on the brow of a hill, and presents a contrast to those which we have lately described, in having a central embattled tower, with pinnacles. The font is Norman, and square. On the north side of the tower, which contains five bells, are two finely preserved zigzag arches. The west window is of the decorated period, and contains stained glass. There are four shields in the mouldings: one of the Abbey of Bath; another depicting a bugle horn; the third a bow; and the fourth a quiver of arrows. In the porch is a small decorated canopy, and near the altar a piscina. The south chapel has a square-headed decorated window, and on the wall between it and the nave is a figure of an angel supporting a coat-of-arms. Above is a window divided into two compartments, which contains some ancient stained glass. The church was thoroughly repaired in 1840, when sixty additional sittings were obtained. In the graveyard is a decaying recumbent effigy, which probably once occupied an altar-tomb in the chapel.

The church contains the remains of a stone coffin – presumable the This document contains transcriptions of inscriptions on memorials at St ‘recumbent effigy’ - which the histories suggest dates from the 13th Peter’s church, Englishcombe near Bath. century. From the Bath Chronicle of Thu 23 Jul 1840 p3;

The inference seems to be that the present church has been erected on the site of some ecclesiastical edifice existing at a remote period on the same spot. Stone coffins have, from time to time, in the memory of persons now living, been discovered in this parish during the last thirty-five years, in draining a field belonging to John Cottle, Esq., of Hatfield-place.

There is a good deal of ivy on the church which prevents a thorough examination of the alls being made.

The churchyard is now ‘closed’ with only the burial of cremated remains outside the eastern end of the church. Issue 1 2

Englishcombe, nr Bath – Memorial Inscriptions Overall Layout The churchyard is on all four sides of the church. A survey was started out in about 2002 but never completed. No sexton’s book describing who is buried where seems to have survived. In the absence of this the original

survey divided the churchyard into arbitrary areas A-L with numbers then

assigned to the surviving memorials.

The northern side of the churchyard had the graves arranged in a grid aligned with the line of the northern wall of the church. The graves in the southern area are quite sparse but also seem to be arranged in a grid.

WAR RECORD “This ship carried the King and Queen to Canada in 1939, and during a continuous record of war service, conveyed members of the Allied Services to every theatre of the war. “Our White Ensign comes from a ship well know in the West Country. H.M.S. Flying Fox, and is the gift of the Severn Division of the R.N.V.R. “The Royal Air Force ensign was given by the Royal Air Force. “We were still without a flag to represent the Army. Eventually I wrote to Lord Montgomery to ask of he would help us. By return, he replied he would. In due course the flag arrived. “Concerning its history, he informs me that the flag which was flying at the time of the surrender was taken down after the signing and is in his possession. VERY SUITABLE “He goes on to say: ‘The one I have sent you was then put up, was flown at my headquarters on Luneburg Heath in the British zone. It is thus more a victory flag than a war flag, and as such is very suitable for your church.’ “So comes to rest in Englishcombe Church the flag that was raised over the headquarters of the Army after the surrender of the German forces. . . .
