NJIT is one of four institutions currently in the Great West Conference. The Great West formed a Division I all-sports league that will conducted championship competition in several sports in 2008-09 and then begin full conference scheduling and championships in 2009-10.

The Great West, which has existed for four years as a football-only league in the NCAA's Divi - sion I Football Championship Subdivision (formerly known as I-AA), expanded into an all- sports league with the addition of NJIT, Texas-Pan American, Utah Valley, Houston Baptist.

The all-sports version of the Great West Conference will eventually offer championships in 14 sports, 11 of which are sponsored by NJIT, including: men's and women's basketball; baseball; women's volleyball; women's tennis; men's and women's cross country; men's and women's GWC P RESEASON POLL indoor track and field; and, men's and women's outdoor track and field. Team Overall GWC Cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field championships started in 2008-09, with WL W-L the full complement scheduled kicked in the following year in 2009-10. Houston Baptist will be a active member of Division I in 2014-15. Texas-Pan American has been an active Division I program for many years.

The expanded conference is not eligible for automatic Division I championship postseason GWC Q UICK FACTS qualification, but will offer the benefit of conference championship competition, stable sched - uling opportunities in all conference sports and individual recognition for student-athletes Location: Naperville, IL through weekly and season all-conference recognition. The individual awards programs for Founded: Football Conference (2004) student-athletes will begin in 2008-09. All Sport Conference (2008) NJIT's sports that do not come under the Great West umbrella will continue in their existing Website: www.greatwestconference.org conferences--men's soccer (independent), men's volleyball in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volley - Colors: Red, Blue, White ball Association, which has an automatic NCAA postseason berth, which was claimed this year Affiliations: NCAA Division I by eventual 2008 national champion, Penn State.

COLLEGE OF ST. J OSEPH (VT) ‘87 R ECORD AT NJIT (6-7)

Steve Lanpher, a veteran of nearly 20 years coaching girls and women's basketball and most recently the women's basketball associate head coach at the University of Massachusetts, was named as the new head women's basketball coach at New Jersey Institute of Technol - ogy in July of 2012.

Lanpher (pronounced Lan-FEER), who has been a head coach at the high school, junior college and at the four-year college level in NCAA Division III, has seven years experience as either an assistant coach or associate head coach at the NCAA Division I level.

In 2006, he became an assistant coach at the University of Vermont, beginning a six-year association with head coach Sharon Dawley, who promoted him to associate head coach for his last two years at Vermont and hired him as associate head coach at UMass, when she was named head coach there in 2010.

Vermont's combined record in Lanpher's four years on the staff there was 91-40. In his second year with the Catamounts, they finished 24-9 and advanced to the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament in postseason. The next two years, they were champions, reaching the NCAA Division I Tournament in both 2009 and 2010. The 2009 team finished 21-12 and the 2010 team was 27-7, including a win in the first round of the NCAAs.

At UMass, Lanpher assisted Coach Dawley in the first two years of work toward building a championship-quality program in the rugged Atlantic 10 Conference.

“Steve is a great guy and I'm going to miss him and his family,” said Dawley, the UMass head coach of her former top assistant. “I'm thrilled that he's getting this opportunity to take over his own program. He's passionate about basketball and developing great relation - ships with the student-athletes. He's passionate about them excelling in the classroom, as well as on the basketball court.”

A 1987 graduate of College of St. Joseph in Rutland, VT, with a bachelor's degree and a master's degree three years later, Lanpher began his coaching career with a three-year stint as head girls basketball coach at West Rutland High School. He returned to the College of St. Joseph as women's basketball coach in 1993-94, before serving in the United States Army as a Ranger in the First Ranger Battalion in Sa - vannah, GA.

Returning to civilian life, he was the head coach of a startup women's junior college program at Dean College in Massachusetts, where he was Region XXI Coach of the Year in 1998. From Dean, he moved to Pratt Community College in Kansas, where he led the team to 18 wins in his second year, a 10-win improvement over the first year.

Entering the Division I college ranks for the first time in 2001 as an assistant coach at Lamar University in Texas, he spent a year there be - fore returning to Vermont as head coach at Division III Norwich University, where his four-year mark was 93-28. The records in the last two of his four years at Norwich were 25-4 in 2004-05 and 25-5 in 2005-06. At Norwich, he was a finalist for New England Coach of the Year and was conference co-Coach of the Year, with his team leading the nation in scoring defense one year and advancing to the second round of the Division III national tournament.

In naming Lanpher to lead the fortunes of NJIT women's basketball, Lenny Kaplan, the Director of Athletics, cited the coach's background. “We were looking for someone who had been a part of multiple successful programs,” said Kaplan. “Steve's head coaching experience, particularly at Norwich, combined with his work at Vermont and UMass helped make him a great fit for us. We look forward to his guid - ing our program toward new levels of success in Division I.”

Said Lanpher, the new coach of the Highlanders: “I am both humbled and honored to be selected as the next women's basketball coach at NJIT. I would like to thank President (Dr. Joel) Bloom, (Vice President) Dr. (Jack) Gentul, the entire search committee, and especially Lenny Kaplan for the faith and trust they have shown me. I am extremely excited about leading the women's basketball program to greater heights, both on and off the floor. I will work tirelessly to make our program one of honor, pride and respect and a source of pride for the entire NJIT community."

Powerful Penn State Tops Highlanders

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA —Powerful Penn State used a balanced attack with four players scoring in double-figures topping NJIT, 82-37, in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Bryce Jordan Center.

The Lady Lions, who are on a four-game winning streak, are ranked No. 11 in the AP Poll and No. 10 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll as of December 18, are off to a 10-2 start this season.

For NJIT, Penn State is the highest nationally ranked team the Highlanders have faced since com - peting against a Division I schedule (2006-07). NJIT faced DePaul (No. 13/18) in 2010-11 in Chicago.

Penn State, defending Big Ten regular season champions, won its first six games of the season until the streak was snapped at Miami (FL) on November 29 (69-65). The Lady Lions other loss came at No. 2/2 Connecticut (67-52) on December 6, who also eliminated Penn State from the 2012 Sweet Sixteen NCAA Tournament (77-59).

Junior guard Maggie Lucas, who is among players receiving votes for the Associated Press Presea - son All-America team, led the game with a game-high 21 points on a 7-of-11 day from the field and 5-of-8 from behind the arc while sharing game-high honors with NJIT's Uju Nwankwo with eight. As a sophomore, Lucas earned AP All-American honorable mention.

Senior Nikki Greene, the Lady Lions 6-foot-4 center, combined for 12 points and six rebounds. Senior guard , who was selected to the Big Ten coaches' preseason Co-Player of the Year and the Big Ten first-team and Ariel Edwards each chipped in 10 points in the home victory.

NJIT was led by senior guard Melanie Griffin, the only Highlander to reach double-figures at Penn State with 10 points while Nwankwo added seven points, eight rebounds and three block shots.

Sophomore center Nicole Maticka, who entered the 2012-13 season with 83 blocks (setting the NJIT D1 single season record and D1 career record last season) came into Sunday's contest with 100 career blocks, registered three blocked shots against Penn State setting a new NJIT school- record with 103 blocked shots. Maticka surpasses Liliana Alvarez's 102 career blocks shots (1990- 94).

Penn State opened up the contest on a 16-2 run and never looked back finishing 46 percent from the field (28-61), 70 percent from long range (7-of-10) and 80 percent from the free throw line (19-for-24).
