a NOW REPORT he HIV virus, which causes AIDS, has long infiltrated the borders into Sikkim. There Twas a time when we were secure from infection in our insulated, clean, safe worlds. But the virus is a simple communicable disease. It does not discriminate. It does not see barriers of class, religion or geography. So, today, eight years after the first HIV case was reported in the state, we have 28 HIV cases with eight cases of full blown AIDS. IN And yet HIV-related stigma and discrimination remains an enormous barrier to effec- tively fight the HIV and AIDS epidemic. Combating the stigma and discrimination against people affected by HIV/AIDS was the main theme of this year’s World AIDS Day Cel- ebration on December 1. In Gangtok, various Taxi Driver Associations marked the day by organizing aware- ness programmes at the different taxi stands. Sponsored by the State AIDS Control Society and with active participation of Voluntary Health Association of Sikkim, the day AID long programme at the taxi stands saw quizzes being held, talks delivered on the dis- ease and free distribution of condoms. A rally was also organized from the Deorali Taxi stand. In the evening, the Interact Club of Gangtok Hills presented a musical programme at the ongoing Tourism fest, to heighten awareness on the disease. In an official message, Minister, Health & Family Welfare, DD Bhutia said that OF awareness and education about the disease were the only weapons to combat this growing menace, as there is neither any vaccine to prevent it nor any medi- cine for its complete cure. “Lets all join hands to combat this ever-growing menace of HIV epidemic and at the same time make the HIV patients feel comfortable and live in the society where they have grown up. Let our children also learn the basic tenets of healthy AWARENESS behavior and value of love and compassion in life and living”
