In 1979, Dan Geimer was looking for work after getting laid off from a factory job he’d taken after graduating from Decatur’s Bellmont High School the year before. He answered an ad for a manager trainee position with Koerber & Baber Jewelers in Fort Wayne. For Dan and Jane Geimer, it was on a blind date in 1981. They were married two years later. Fast forward almost 40 years. The couple’s business, Daniel’s Jewelers, is nominated for and selected as the 2021 Business of the Year by the Wells County Chamber of Commerce. “It’s truly amazing,” Dan Geimer said. “We were shocked” when chamber Dan and Jane Geimer, from left, with two of their current employees, Allison Gerber and Nancy Morrissey-Leitz, who has been with the store for 21 of their 26 years. Wells County Chamber of Commerce 2021 Page 15 Wells County Citizen of the Year Standing ‘on the shoulders of giants’ The 2021 Wells County Citizen of the Year calls his journey into the newspaper industry “serendipitous.” The only journalism class Mark Miller took was in high school — he was in the fi rst graduating class of Bellmont High School in Decatur. The former News- Banner editor and publisher recalled enjoying it, but he enjoyed his speech class more. He wanted to teach at the collegiate level, but he got drafted after graduating from Ball State University in 1972. He doesn’t regret his service — “It was a good, growing experience and I got a two-year vacation in Europe,” he recalled — but was released from active duty the day after Labor Day 1975. He wasn’t sure if he would pursue a high school teaching job or go back to school to get his master’s degree, neither Mark Miller is the Wells County Citizen of the Year. Each year a group of 20 individuals gather from September through May to experience a life-changing program created by Dr. Tim Elmore, founder of Growing Lead- ers. The 31st Annual Chicken BBQ Event ... continued to be a success, despite the challenges 2020 brought us. The event is normally held at the 4-H Fair; however, with many activities changed and canceled the event was moved to a drive-thru only at Harrison Plaza. Record- breaking tickets were sold and proved to be one of the Chamber’s major fund-raising events.

Wells County Chamber of Commerce 2021 Page 47 The 33rd Annual Chamber Golf Expo ... was held on Aug. 6 at Timber Ridge Golf Course and was one of the most beautiful days of the year. Over 70 sponsors supported this coveted event with 36 teams and 148 golfers hitting the links. “The Chamber Golf Expo is one of the biggest and best events each year. There are so many ways for businesses to network, have fun, and enjoy a great day,” said Erin Prible, Executive Director, Wells County Chamber of Commerce. “We can’t thank our sponsors enough that support and help to make this a top-notch event. Newly added this year was the Drink Sponsor, Spherion Staff- ing; and our Golf Cart Sponsors were Andrews & Crell, James S Jackson, Lowe’s, Phil’s One Stop, and Ruoff Mortgage.” Golfers, volunteers, and sponsors can network with one another throughout the entire day making connections and lasting friendships.
