Bit scary and I would say a number of you may have to go through beginner lessons again and also wear name tags lol. On the 9th of May the national association had their AGM with a number of clubs from throughout New Zealand that were involved. First time ever we had to run the meeting through zoom so talking to 40 odd people from around the country was quite weird but it worked. A number of remits were discussed and voted on with a collection of changes mostly good but a few I didn’t agree with but you all can see it all on the association website if you are interested in looking . Also senior and junior nationals were voted on where they should be hosted and that is also advertised on their website. Juniors next year will be in Porirua and Seniors will be in Wanganui.

The All Time Masters of Symphonic Rock ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA Not all rock bands are created equal! THE ORCHESTRA Starring Former Members ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA is living proof. With a membership pedigree from 1972 to present, THE ORCHESTRA Starring Former Members ELO has launched their 2020 - 2021 TOUR, heralding a continuing era of unparalleled symphonic rock. ALL six members of THE ORCHESTRA were formerly part of the ELO Part II recording and/or touring family. Longest term member, Mik Kaminski, ELO’s famous Blue Violin Player, sometimes tells great “road stories” to interviewers - some dating back to the Electric Light Orchestra days between years 1972 through the original line-up’s finale’ performance in 1986. ELO's final 1980’s performance for several years occurred on July 13, 1986 in Stuttgart, Germany performing on the bill with Rod Stewart. ELO effectively disbanded after that final show in Stuttgart in 1986, but there was no announcement made of any plans for the various members of ELO for the next two years, until Eric Troyer and Mik Kaminski were among the principles which spearheaded the formation of ELO Part II. The former members of ELO and ELO Part II have toured domestically and internationally since early 2001 as THE ORCHESTRA Starring Former Members ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA in over 50 countries. They have performed AND recorded with some of the world’s most prestigious Symphony Orchestras, Choral Groups and Indigenous Musical Accompaniment of select countries. Between 1988 and 2021, both incarnations of the group have performed in over one hundred of the symphonic world’s top-rated orchestral-friendly venues from England’s most treasured and distinctive performance hall, the 5,272 seat ROYAL ALBERT HALL in London, which celebrates 150 years in 2021 to the world’s most prestigious concert hall, the 2,805 seat CARNEGIE HALL in New York City, which was founded and built by Andrew Carnegie in 1989.

ROCK'N'ROLL’S 1ST DECADE Week Three: Rock in the Mid-1950s Recommended Listening: Chuck Berry, The Anthology (Chess, 2000). Two-CD, 50-song compilation of his most essential tracks from the mid-1950s through the early 1970s, including hits and his most influential non- hits. These include some of the most familiar and most-covered songs in all of rock, important both for the quality of the songwriting and the many classic riffs in tunes like "Johnny B. Goode," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Rock and Roll Music," "Sweet Little Sixteen," and "Reelin' & Rockin'." The single-disc collection The Great Twenty-Eight contains most of his most well known songs. Johnny Cash, The Sun Years (Rhino, 1990). Cash is usually considered a country artist, not a rock one. There's no denying, however, that much of his mid-1950s material for Sun had a rockabilly and pop-rock flavor. This has his most popular recordings for the label, including the hits "I Walk the Line," "Ballad of a Teenage Queen," and "Folsom Prison Blues." Fats Domino, Fats Domino Jukebox: 20 Greatest Hits the Way You Originally Heard Them (Capitol, 2002). Fats Domino had more than 20 hits, but this has the most famous ones by the greatest exponent of New Orleans rock'n'roll, including "The Fat Man," "Ain't That a Shame," and "Blueberry Hill." Wanda Jackson, Queen of Rockabilly (Ace, 2000). Commonly and rightfully referred to as the best woman rock artist of the 1950s, Jackson was more than that. She was one of the best rockabilly singers, period.

Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum • Words & Music • Grades 7-12 Chuck Berry: Father of Rock & Roll While many artists are rock pioneers, Chuck Berry is universally considered the first who put it all together: the country guitar licks, the rhythm and blues beat, and lyrics that spoke to a young generation. In just a few songs, he drew a musical blueprint for what the world would soon know as rock & roll. “He may be the single most important name in the history of rock,” critic Lillian Roxon wrote in her 1969 landmark Rock Encyclopedia. “If you tried to give rock & roll another name,” Beatle John Lennon once said, “you might call it Chuck Berry.” Born October 18, 1926, in St. Louis, Missouri, Berry grew up in a middle-class African American neighborhood, the fourth of six children. His father was a part-time preacher and his mother sang in the choir, so gospel was Berry’s earliest musical influence. The radio later introduced him to boogie-woogie, blues, swing, and “hillbilly” songs. After he wowed classmates with a vocal performance in high school, Berry was determined to have a music career. Detoured by a three-year prison term for a teenage robbery spree, Berry By year’s end, “Maybellene” had sold a million copies, and Berry saw got back on track and became a popular performer in St. Louis clubs he had tapped into an emerging market: white teenagers with new singing other artists’ songs. Soon he began writing his own, at first by buying power who were searching for music they could call their own.

Roll Over Beethoven An Article by Frank Daniels Chess Singles Label Styles Label 50 – June 1950 through September 1957 This label appears on 45 RPM and 78 RPM singles. “CHESS” appears at the top, with chess pieces to the side and through the logo. The 45 RPM singles have the colors swapped, with the white color replaced by silver. Label 57 – October 1957 through March 1961 Blue, black, or gold label with CHESS running vertically down the left side. Chess released singles at 78 RPM only for potential hits after 1958, with the latest known 78 being Chuck Berry’s “Let it Rock” in late January 1960. Some singles continued to use the blue label until March 1963. Label 61 – April 1961 through March 1963 Yellow, red, and black label with arrows pointing to CHESS. CHESS appears at the right side. Label 63 – March 1963 through October 1966 Black label with CHESS in front of a shield at the top. Label 66 – November 1966 through July 1971 Light blue label with CHESS in red, white, and blue at the top. In March 1969, Chess became part of General Recorded Tape (GRT), but the label style remained the same for two more years. One pressing plant kept this label into 1972. Label 71 – July 1971 through July 1975 Orange and turquoise label with rim print reading “A GRT Record Group Co., Div. of GRT Corp.” or “Manufactured by GRT Corporation.” While it seems as though one of the two wordings ought to have been “first” and the other “second,” both appear on singles from 1971 all the way through 1975.

Johnson was the leader and the pianist, Ebby Hardy was the drummer, and I replaced somebody to play guitar and sing. By the Easter holidays we kept a steady packed house on weekends with a well-rounded repertoire programmed to the varied clientele. “The music played most around St. Louis was country-western, which was usually called hillbilly music, and swing. Curiosity provoked me to lay a lot of the country stuff on our predominantly black audience and some of the clubgoers stared whispering, ‘Who is that black hillbilly at the Cosmo?’ After they laughed at me a few times, they began requesting the hillbilly stuff and enjoyed trying to dance to it.
