Annie Oakley Topic Guide for Chronicling America (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov) Introduction Annie Oakley (1860-1926) was an American sharpshooter and exhibition shooter born in Darke County, Ohio, as Phoebe Ann Mosey. When she was five, her father died, and Annie learned to trap, shoot and hunt by age eight to help support her family. In 1875 (though some sources say it was in 1881), Annie met her future husband, Frank E. Butler, at the Baughman & Butler shooting act in Cincinnati, while beating him in a shooting contest. They were married a year later, and in 1885, they joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West where she was given the nickname “Little Sure Shot.” Considered America’s first female star, Oakley traveled all over the United States and Europe showing off her skills. Oakley set shooting records into her sixties, and also did philanthropic work for women’s rights and other causes. In 1925, she died in Greenville, Ohio. Important Dates . Arab-West Report, May 26, 2014 St. Demiana’s Monastery: an oasis of spirituality Author: Weston Bland Photos: Weston Bland On Friday, May 16, as part of a group of diverse national and religious background, I had the opportunity to attend the moulid, or festival, of St. Demiana [Dimyana] at her namesake monastery in the villaGe of Demiana in the district Barrary-Belqas in the Egyptian Delta. In general, the trip, orGanized by the Center for Arab-West Understanding, provided a fascinatinG look into the dynamics of a popular reliGious celebration, as well as into the lives of the nuns that live and work on the grounds of the monastery. St. Demiana’s festival is a popular Christian celebration that attracts larGe numbers of visitors every year. Traditionally, the celebrations include activities both within the monastery complex, as well as on the Grounds surroundinG the complex. This year however, the outside celebrations were significantly scaled back due to security concerns; these concerns were underscored by the heavy security presence we encountered at the perimeter of the festival Grounds upon arrivinG. Ultimately though, such concerns seemed to have had little effect in deterring the significant crowds of the faithful that still turned out for the celebration. Crowds inside the monastery; photo: Mother Theoliptie photo: Weston Bland External festival Grounds; photo: Mother Theoliptie After enterinG the monastery complex, we were quickly directed to the primary church where prayers were taking place. In the front of the hall, our group was given a brief audience with Metropolitan Bishoy, the Orthodox Metropolitan for Damietta, Kafr al-Sheikh, and the abbot of the monastery.

  • Women's History Is Everywhere: 10 Ideas for Celebrating in Communities
Women’s History is Everywhere: 10 Ideas for Celebrating In Communities A How-To Community Handbook Prepared by The President’s Commission on the Celebration of Women in American History “Just think of the ideas, the inventions, the social movements that have so dramatically altered our society. Now, many of those movements and ideas we can trace to our own founding, our founding documents: the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. And we can then follow those ideas as they move toward Seneca Falls, where 150 years ago, women struggled to articulate what their rights should be. From women’s struggle to gain the right to vote to gaining the access that we needed in the halls of academia, to pursuing the jobs and business opportunities we were qualified for, to competing on the field of sports, we have seen many breathtaking changes. Whether we know the names of the women who have done these acts because they stand in history, or we see them in the television or the newspaper coverage, we know that for everyone whose name we know there are countless women who are engaged every day in the ordinary, but remarkable, acts of citizenship.” —- Hillary Rodham Clinton, March 15, 1999 Women’s History is Everywhere: 10 Ideas for Celebrating In Communities A How-To Community Handbook prepared by the President’s Commission on the Celebration of Women in American History Commission Co-Chairs: Ann Lewis and Beth Newburger Commission Members: Dr. Johnnetta B. • Maryland Parkway Corridor
MARYLAND PARKWAY CORRIDOR TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT Existing Conditions and Needs Assessment April 27th, 2020 Foreword The Maryland Parkway Corridor Existing Conditions and Needs Assessment was developed in early 2020 prior to the broader spread of COVID-19 and the declaration of a global pandemic. As such, the report accurately reflects the conditions that existed within the study area prior to March 2020, but does not necessarily reflect the existing conditions or the “new normal” that is expected as the Las Vegas Valley, the nation and the globe emerge from the current crisis. Moving forward, it will be critical to supplement the observations and findings included within this report with observations, data and community input with regards to how behavior, public health provisions, and market conditions will be different over the coming months. The TOD Plans will also need to make assessments of what changes are likely to be temporary and what shifts may permanently impact how we live, work and play in this important corridor.
