Dr. Willis Mackey

Over the past year Judson ISD has seen some remarkable academic progress that is very encouraging. You may have heard that every one of Judson ISD’s campuses…elementary, middle and high school met state academic standards. That is something that only two other school districts in the Bexar County area could say. That was soon followed by news that our schools also met all federal academic standards. While this achievement is not an end, I want to thank our teachers and administrators for believing in systems that were put in place that I believe are making a difference. The strategy is essentially three systems that fit and work together to create strong schools with ongoing support for teaching and learning.

The first system deals with what is called “vertical alignment.” This just means that what is taught in kindergarten, for example, will prepare each student for what they will need to know going into first grade. It’s like a set of stairs…what a student is learning in one grade should lead up, at the end of the year, to what they will need to be successful at the next grade. Each grade is academically connected to the next so there is a building of the skills and knowledge needed to be ready for the next year. This connection from one grade to the next is established as teachers from each grade level communicate to each other the standards students need to know to be successful as they move on. This puts all teachers on the “same page” so to speak, so the staircase is solidly built with as few gaps as possible.

The second system is “collaborative planning.” This is where our teachers sit down to plan out the lessons together. Our teachers are working with a well thought out curriculum that is helping our students walk through each concept in an understandable way. This planning and executing of lessons for our students is like the nuts, bolts and nails that construct the staircase that will build their learning progress. Our teachers also realize that each student is different, so their creativity is needed in addressing individual learning needs and even the culture from which they are coming. This can be critical in reaching kids from all different backgrounds. When we see the students as “our students” and approach them where they are, instead of making them come to us, we have a better chance of helping them reach their potential.

The third and last system is a “reflective practice model.” RPM, as it is sometimes called, is a process where teachers objectively look at student work and student data to make adjustments in their lesson plans. By looking at information like students’ daily work, their classroom tests and even state assessment test scores, we can better detect where there are gaps in understanding. From there, teachers can, as a group, know how to adjust their approach to produce better understanding and mastery of concepts and skills for all students. Going back to the staircase idea, this practice shows where the learning structure may be weak and where there are gaps from one step to the next so they can tighten up and become a more solid continuous structure.

While I believe that these systems are solid, they are only as good as the teachers and administrators that put them in practice on a daily basis. I want to thank them for their dedication and perseverance in helping our kids climb their staircase to reach their potential and success.

Digging in the ground and smelling fresh dirt and planting a beautiful garden is something every elementary student should experience. Students at Candlewood are turning dirt in a brand new school garden project in hopes of getting the hands of their students dirty and their minds green with experience. Each grade level and Special Education class will plant and take care of their own 4X8 foot raised garden bed. This project is made possible by incentive money that the district received through recent energy reduction measures. The school has also received some great donations from parents and Lowe's, as well as some big help from the school's organic recycling partner New Earth Soils and Compost. Thank you to everyone involved for making this happen.

JUDSON MIDDLE SCHOOL ORCHESTRA EARNS SWEEPSTAKES

For the first time in Judson Middle School history, the orchestra earned Sweepstakes at a varsity level UIL music contest. Last year the group got all top marks, but as a non-varsity level group. This was the concert and sight reading contest that not only tests a group's ability to play prepared pieces cohesively and musically, but it also requires them to play a piece that they have never seen before. The students and director get only a few minutes to talk over the piece before actually playing it...and they only get one shot at it. The Judson MS orchestra came through it with flying colors. For music students, it like acing the STAAR test...and they did it. In addition, 10 students made it to the Region 12 Orchestra. Congratulations to all these students...you are making spectacular music!

3 JECA WALKS FOR ONE OF THEIR OWN

Judson Early College Academy is tight knit group...just about everyone knows everyone. The staff at JECA came out in support of one of their students recently for the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Annual Muscle Walk. The school had a great group who raised more than $1,500 for MDA through the generous support of our community, students and staff. In the end, because of their efforts the school was also awarded $250 from Whataburger's school team challenge.

SEBASTIEN GIVES BACK TO HIS SCHOOL

It's good to see that while some people reach a certain level of notoriety and maybe even fame, they don't forget about others and from where they came. Sebastien De La Cruz who is best known for his meteoric rise in the music business because of his performances on the NBC show "America's Got Talent," took an opportunity to give back to his school. He recently was awarded a $1,000 check from the Hispanic Scholarship Fund to be donated to the charity or cause of his choice. His choice was the choir program at his school Kitty Hawk Middle School. Sebastien donated the check during an assembly at his school.

4 Rockets Take Center Stage

By Christine Khoury (Exclusive Student Content)

Scenes from fall production of "Noises Off"

This is what some people put all of their time into. It’s what some students dedicate every Saturday to doing. It is the one and only reason some students sacrifice their sleep and free time----to take center stage!

University Interscholastic League (UIL) is a competition in which students from different schools compete in various categories for the top spot. The theatre events take place on Saturdays as early as the crack of dawn and end as late as 9 p.m. The categories vary from academics to fine arts.

A lot more preparation goes into UIL than people know. The actors and competitors give a lot of their time to practice in order to be the very best. “We start preparing in early August, and the first competition is during the first week of school. So when school starts, they’re ready for competition,” said Mr. Bailey, Judson Theatre Arts Department Head and the UIL Theatre Coordinator for the school. Mr. Bailey enjoys the competitive aspect of theatre and his passion resonates with his students once they take the stage.

5 Rockets Take Center Stage (continued)

No matter how tired or stressed they are, both actors admit if they don’t work hard for what they want, they can’t expect the results of being the best.

“I’m pretty proud and amazed at the talent that they are exhibiting,” said Ms. White, the Theatre I teacher and UIL Theatre coach. “They are representatives of Judson Theatre.”

Trey Adkins and Brianna Pitts have been in theatre since their sixth grade year and have always been very involved.

“It’s my senior year and I have been with TFA ( Forensics Association) for four years, and to be able to end with that note was very special. It was a nice finish to everything,” Trey Adkins said.

Both students always remain humble, no matter how much praise they receive from others.

“I figure if I’m not at the top I’m not doing it

Trey Adkins and Brianna Pitts right, honestly. But every time I don’t win, it’s a learning experience,” Brianna said.

From early mornings to late nights, Trey Adkins’ and Brianna Pitts’ dedication to the theatre department hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“I could not be any more honored that I have been a part of their journey,” said Ms. White.

KIRBY MIDDLE SCHOOL SKILLSUSA EARN “PERFECT SCORE”

Judson ISD's CTE students show time after time they are truly skilled in what they do. Kirby Middle School students Alex Aleman, Alan Arau and David Santillano won first place at the recent Texas SkillsUSA district contest held at St. Philip's College. These three guys dubbed the "Kirby Welding Crew" had their own t-shirts to display their team spirit. Well it wasn't just about the name or the t-shirts...these guys got together and made something really really good. They worked hard together on a picnic table and entered it in the contest. They not only won 1st place with it, but they earned a perfect score of 100%...that means their project was "of industry standards and great skill." The CTE program in Judson ISD is helping prepare tomorrow's...and in many cases today's work force in so many industries. Congratulations to the Kirby Team. Kenneth Tucker is their teacher.

METGER MS FCCLA SERVES FAMILIES AT RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE

Metzger Middle School FCCLA students recently paid a visit to the Ronald McDonald House. The field trip was a community service outreach to the facility which is a type of home away from home for the families of children who are undergoing extensive treatment at local hospitals. They showed true Judson ISD and Metzger Pride in the way they served families during their time there. Students came away with a new understanding of what families go through in these trying situations and their service, in the end, was also a blessing that came back to them.

9 Star Athletes Producing Excellence Wagner High School

Wagner

Julian Cantu has been a captain for the Wagner Thunderbirds soccer team for the last two seasons. His leadership is demonstrated on and off the field. Julian exhibits great study habits in the classroom and always pays close attention to his academic responsibilities. Also, Julian was one of our leading scorers this year and always seemed to find a way to lift his team, whether it was making a great hustle play or simply sending a beautiful pass to assist another scorer. For much of the season Julian decided to play through an injury that would have kept many other players on the bench. Above all, Julian is a Star Athlete, because he plays soccer with more heart than most athletes. It was this level of heart that led Julian to be named to the All-District 1st Team for this season. What remains for Julian’s soccer career is unknown, but he is looking into playing at the next level. With the right instruction and training the sky is the limit for Julian. His talent and work ethic exceed most and if he stays dedicated to his passion for playing this game, he will have the chance to play competitively for many years to come. We wish Julian all the best and expect only great things from him after he leaves Wagner!!

On February 15, 2014, Wagner Junior Julie Mata (40-1) won her first Girls 5A State Championship in the 110 lb. weight class. She defeated her opponent, Europa Cabada of Coronado El Paso, by a score of 4-1. What is impressive is that in January Julie wrestled and defeated a competitor from Clear Falls who was in a bigger weight class by a score of 15-5. That same wrestler that Julie beat later ended up being crowned the 119 lbs. state champion. Julie is a 2 time Regional Champion and was voted twice as the UIL Region 4 Most Outstanding Girl Wrestler. Julie should be favored to repeat as the State Champion as a senior next year.

Judson Evening High School

We are proud to announce Joshua Martinez as a Star Teacher for Judson Evening High School. He has been with Judson ISD since 2012 as an educator with the Judson Achievement Center, as well as one of our most dedicated educators at Judson Evening High School. He has been chosen as a Star Teacher because of his outstanding efforts in supporting students who are working towards obtaining their high school diploma. The students look up to Mr. Martinez as a mentor, a friend and an educator who spends his personal time in the evening, working with students in our program. In our program, students are given the opportunity to attend classes online, and Mr. Martinez is there to tutor and guide students through the program. He is an asset to our school and we appreciate his hard work throughout his last two years with JISD.

Star Volunteer Producing Excellence JECA

Mrs. Mariam Gonzales, in addition to being the mother of senior Rudy Gonzales, is one of our most ardent volunteers. No project or event has been too big, too small, and too much or too little for her to volunteer her time to JECA. In addition to being a full time realtor and parent, she has given her time willingly to the Class of 2014 on a regular basis. In preparation and anticipation of Rudy’s graduation, Mrs. Gonzales has volunteered the past four years on the Project Graduation. She has also donated her time to assist in the Spring Fest, Bingo events, Converse Parade, and Project Graduation, bringing food and assisting others in the preparation for all of these activities. She has helped capture memories by taking and sharing her photos of these and numerous other events. We can actually say Project Graduation has been her focus starting four years ago. The endless time and dedication Miriam has given has led to the success and earnings for our Class of 2014.

JUDSON ISD LAUNCHES NEW WELLNESS PROGRAM

It's a new exercise and wellness challenge that is open to all JISD employees.

Research has shown that getting exercise on a regular basis can improve overall health and help prevent disease. And it can all be achieved by walking just 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. With that in mind, the Judson ISD Human Resource Department is launching The JISD Employee Walking Challenge. It's a new exercise and wellness challenge that is open to all JISD employees. With April bringing National Walking Day, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to encourage staff to begin a new effort to improve how their bodies feel and work. The voluntary program is a way of promoting and encouraging walking as a consistent part of a healthy lifestyle that can profoundly affect a person's overall well-being...like it did for one person you may know.

"After walking the half marathon I did nothing for 2 weeks. I found that I was missing the exercise." JISD Board Member Gilbert Flores

Judson ISD Board Member Gilbert Flores has seen a big change. At age 61, Mr. Flores decided to walk in the San Antonio Rock-n-Roll Marathon sort of as a lark because a friend at work challenged him to do it. He and his friend joined a support group that was training to walk in the event so they would be prepared. He finished in 3:43:52. After that he says, "I did nothing for 2 weeks. I found that I was missing the exercise. I decided that I would look for other events to walk/run." He began to see dramatic changes in the process. Before his San Antonio R-n-R Marathon challenge he weighed 240 lbs. and wore a size 50 suit. His last big event was the New Orleans R-n-Roll Marathon where he took more than 40 minutes off his finish time and now he fits into a size 46 suit. In fact, he's so enthusiastic about his life change, he'd like to get back to running/walking with a group again. The Judson ISD Walking Challenge would be a great reason to start up a group with him or anyone else.

JISD Board Member Gilbert Flores has seen simple exercise produce big changes

JUDSON ISD LAUNCHES NEW WELLNESS PROGRAM (continued)

The JISD Walking Challenge is simple...first of all, each employee is asked to sign up for the challenge through eduphoria...that e-form will be coming soon. We'll let you know when it's available as well as the official start of the challenge...second, when it starts, walk 30 minutes a day, five days a week for a total of six weeks.

By using the basic formula of the average walking speed of 4 mph, 15 minutes of walking should equal one mile. That calculates out that an employee can walk about 10 miles a week.

Once an employee reaches 60 miles, they are asked to email Kim Cadwell kim [email protected] and they will get a small backpack that's great for carrying your walking shoes and clothes for changing. It doesn't take long each day, but it adds up to moving your body and living a healthier life. In the coming weeks, we'll be telling you more about the program, suggestions to make it fun and how you can encourage other staff members. In the meantime, give it some serious thought...it could change your life.

Employees are always encouraged to check with their doctor before starting any exercise program if they have been inactive for a while.

Jammin’ at Jubilee

By Christine Khoury (Exclusive Student Content)

It is a night that no matter who you are or what grade you’re in, students come together for a time of celebration at the annual Judson Jubilee. From freshmen to seniors, boys and girls, one group to another, at the traditional Judson High School Jubilee, the Rocket community comes out to celebrate the months of hard work. Work and dedication that the dancers, cheerleaders, and color guard have spent practicing. Each group puts on a show that amazes the crowd and bringing smiles and laughter to their faces.

The whole event gives performers a chance to demonstrate their skills, while the audience can enjoy their talent and creativity. “This last Jubilee made me feel honored and proud of my team,” senior Dena Buonya said.

As the fans roar for their fellow Rockets, however, seniors suddenly get a somber feeling that it’s all over. The realization that their four years of high school are behind them hits home for many of them. From being fresh out of middle school as freshmen, to everyday life in high school for the past four years…soon over. The rules and routines that have become commonplace giving rhythm to their life are wrapping up. It occurs to them that they will soon leave high school behind to face and conquer new challenges in the real world.

15

Jammin’ at Jubilee (continued)

Then, as quickly as these emotions arise, they dissipate from the joyful jeers and cheers they receive from the Rocket community.

“Cherishing these moments with my Galaxies is one of the best memories of my high school career,” said Buonya. “I will always remember them,” as she expressed her love for her fellow Galaxy dancers.

Though the moment is bittersweet as the show comes to an end, nothing but Rocket Pride fills the air of the gymnasium as friends and family congratulate the performers. They gave their best for four years to the school and fellow students that mean so much to them. While these laughs, hugs and conversations may be numbered, this is what a community is all about, having fun and bringing people together. Suddenly, there is one more realization: The Rocket community is an amazing and beautiful thing, and we are so glad to be a part of it.

JUDSON ROCKET BASKETBALL MAKES IT TO THE STATE’S FINAL GAME

The Judson High School boys basketball team took off to Austin to play in the Final Four High School Playoffs. But not before the school gave them a big send off. The team marched through the halls of the school led by the Rocket Band Drum Corps. Since TAKS testing had already finished, students were allowed to line the hallways and cheer on their team. You could tell it meant a lot to the team and Coach Mike Wacker. It was a moment that even the news media came to capture. It’s was an experience we'll all remember.

The Rockets had a tough time with Allen to start off. They went into the locker room at halftime trailing, but ended up outscoring their opponent 16-4 in the third quarter and took control winning 52-41. The victory gave Judson the right to play in the final game against Galena Park North Shore. Despite a height disadvantage, Galena Park’s full court press proved to be too much and the Rockets fell in the final game 57- 45. It was the first time since 1993 that Judson had appeared in the final playoff game. Judson Pride Lives On!

17 STAFF OLYMPICS INSPIRES STUDENTS TO “BEST” THE STAAR

It seems like each school has their unique way of prepping for the STAAR exam. Along with the academic preparation and encouragement, the staff at Hopkins each year put their pride on the line for the students in what is called the Annual Staff Olympics. They participate in different unusual games and relays that show kids that they're willing to go out of their comfort zone to show what they can do...and they can too when it comes to the STAAR test. Students got a big kick out of seeing their teachers and administrators trying to bounce a basketball...ride a tricycle, play clipboard tennis, cup stacking, trash can basketball and many other games. They cheered on their favorite participants and learned some great hints for doing well on the test.

OLYMPIA PREPS AND PEPS FOR STAAR

A couple of ways Olympia Elementary School got their kids ready for STAAR was a special writing activity...called Camp Write-Along. Fourth graders took everything they've learned this year in writing and put it into practice in this special "camp." It was some critical practice right before testing that was made a little more fun by breaking out tents in the classroom complete with flashlights so they could write and read their compositions. To get students mentally pumped for the STAAR, Olympia teamed up with Judson High School to escort 3rd-5th graders into a gym full of waiting supporters. The Rocket Drum Line and the Galaxy Dancers cheered them on to excellence. Thanks to everyone who help get these students ready and juiced up to do their best.

JUDSON ISD’S EXCEL TEACHER OF THE YEAR - JUDITH BOEHME KITTY HAWK MIDDLE SCHOOL

Each year KENS 5 TV recognizes outstanding teachers in each school district across the San Antonio metro area. That allows them to spotlight an outstanding teacher from each district that is doing amazing things with students. From the Judson ISD, Kitty Hawk Middle School 8th grade math teacher Judith Boehme was honored as the Excel Teacher of the Year. The television station sent a crew, including anchor Deborah Knapp, to host the ceremony. They also shot a story about Ms. Boehme's work as an encouraging teacher who gets middle school students ready for the rigors of High School math and inspires those who have trouble with math in general. She is not only a lead teacher in math in her grade, but during the spring she holds extra classes for students after school and on Saturdays to make sure they are ready for the STAAR test. As a part of the Excel honor, the program partner with KENS 5, SACU presented a $1,000 check to her. She has taught at Kitty Hawk Middle School for six years. The story about Ms. Boehme aired March 27 on KENS 5. Congratulations Ms. Boehme and thank you for what you do for our students. THREE JUDSON SENIORS COMMIT TO MILITARY ACADEMIES

Students who get nominated and accept opportunities to attend one of our nation's military service academies are somewhat rare...so it's even more special when you have three. That is the case at Judson High School. Congressman Henry Cuellar nominated two of the students for military school appointments and paid a visit to the school to formalize it all in a ceremony. Congressman Cuellar nominated Tristan Holiday to the Naval Academy and Noah Tetro to West Point. Along with these two students, Brandon Sanders has also been accepted into the Air Force Academy. Principal Jesus Hernandez hosted the ceremony with Dr. Willis Mackey offering his congratulations before the Congressman spoke. We want to extend our congratulations to these students and their families as these three young men will take the next step in leading others in protecting and defending this great country. We are proud of you. cheered them on to excellence. Thanks to everyone who help get these students ready and juiced up to do their best.

Judson Senior Writes Way To Her Top College Choice

By Christine Khoury (Exclusive Student Content)

Competing for the first year in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Journalism events, Judson High School senior, Nena Beecham, took first place in district competition at Canyon High School this spring. Nena, an International Baccalaureate (IB) student and honor graduate, has always enjoyed reading and writing. “I have always been an avid reader and enjoy all types of writing, including poetry. My dad also enjoys writing, so I developed an interest based on watching him and reading his writings,” Nena said.

Winning the district championship wasn’t her only achievement at the tournament. Nena also placed second in both feature and news writing and fourth in headline writing, receiving medals in all four events. With that, she will compete for the Regional title in three events: Editorial, News, and Feature writing. Nena is grateful that she was introduced to UIL events her senior year. “I did not know anything about the UIL academic events until our UIL coach, Ms. Bass, began recruiting and coaching students at the beginning of the school year. Now, I am looking forward to working on various publications in university,” Nena said.

All of Nena’s hard work has certainly paid off, affording her some great options for college. She was homeschooled from kindergarten through 9th grade, training her for academic success as an independent learner. “When I came to Judson, I wanted to challenge myself by enrolling in the most rigorous courses. That’s why I decided to enroll in the IB program,” Nena said. Since it is the highest level of academics at Judson, the mindset is different. She’s seen the students are close and supportive, genuinely concerned about each other’s success. “The IB program has been my favorite experience at Judson. I am close to my IB family, and they have had a huge impact on my success,” Nena said.

Nena was accepted to both of her top university choices: University of Texas, Austin, and Georgetown University, a private research university in Washington, D.C. She plans to attend Georgetown in the fall, majoring in International Relations.
