Article Green public spaces in the cities of south and southeast asia. protecting needs towards sustainable well-being SAHAKIAN, Marlyne, et al. Abstract The significance of green public spaces is well documented in relation to social inclusiveness, human health, and biodiversity, yet how green public spaces achieve what Gough (2017) has termed ‘sustainable wellbeing' is less understood. This contribution presents preliminary results from a study of green public spaces in four mega-cities of South and Southeast Asia: Chennai (the Republic of India), Metro Manila (the Republic of the Philippines), Singapore (the Republic of Singapore), and Shanghai (the People's Republic of China), cities that have climates ranging from tropical, to subtropical and temperate. The conceptual framework brings together social practice theories with human development theories, methodological implications for the study of park usage, and Protected Needs. This study sets out to understand how parks satisfy human needs by uncovering practices in relation to activities and material arrangements. Central to the research design and sampling strategy is a desire to understand park-related practices in all of their diversity, and accounting for how different activities are carried out by diverse [...] Reference SAHAKIAN, Marlyne, et al. THEDESTINATION DESTINATION: CHENNAI Chennai may not be the most exciting destination around, or the most adventurous, or even the most beautiful. But what it does have is a little bit of everything. A jack of all trades, if you will. A timeless, unwavering charm and amazing people inhabiting it’s perimeters is what makes the city special. NEED TO KNOW: THE WEATHER The city is very hot during the summer but it does get a little breezy. The evenings do offer a much needed respite though. What to wear: Cotton and linen are going to be your new best friends. Don’t forget to wear enough sunscreen before you head out. NEED TO KNOW: GETTING AROUND Uber: Want your own transport inside the city? Uber comes to your rescue as the cheapest, cashless way to move around the city. Tuk Tuk: Step into an Auto-Rickshaw, as we call it, if you would like to move around the city like a true local. We love them to a point there are movies about Auto-drivers. THINGS TO DO RIGHT NEXT DOOR Decathlon, a sports supply store with an amazingly large collection of gears for a wide range of sports, this store will spoil you with choices! You’ll feel like a kid in a candy store.

  • Pune Urban Biodiversity-A Case of Millennium
.. "- \. ill } JOURNAL OF ECOLOGICAL SOCIETY Val.s 13 and 14, 2000-2001 Biodiversity Profile of an Urban Area Special Double Issue Foreword Urban biodiversity sounds like a misnomer! What diversity of (non-human) life a burgeoning city with three million plus human population is likely to retain? The proof of the pudding is in eating. Here is a gallant attempt to draw a picture of the extant biodiversity of the Pune urban area based on field-work. Enthusiastic collegians under the guidance of their teachers have probed various natural and urban habitats to complete this picture. The wherewithal was provided by Ranwa, a Pune-based NGO deeply interested in the study and conservation of nature. The guest editors for this volume, Prof. Sanjeev Nalavade and Utkarsh Ghate, themselves involved in inspiring this effort have painstakingly edited the available material to give a shape and form that is at once interesting and informative. Hopefully this effort will prove a bench-mark and a useful guide in formulating the future development policies and plans of the Pune urban area. This special double issue is grandly embellished by excellent photographs. Thanks to the contribution made by leading nature photographers of Pune. The web of life that still permeates our urban setting proves the tenacity and adaptive capacities of natural beings in the face of insuperable odds. Notwith- standing the loss of invertebrates and fish species and some of the interesting birds, nature shows extraordinary capabilities to cling to whatever habitat traces that remain. We, the citizens of Pune, must remember that the biodiversity pictured here is not because of any conscious efforts on our part.
