Summer Movie Review Spider-Man 3

Director: ; Starring: , , , Thomas Haden- Church & ; Runtime: 140 min, Rated: PG-13 for action/violence.

The first two Spider-Man films were fun comic book romps chock-full of action, adventure, crazy super villains and a web of romance to rival Harlequin. This third installment finds Peter Parker fighting outer-space ooze which amplifies evil emotions, a man made of sand who may or may not have killed his Uncle Ben, friend-turned-foe Harry Osborne (peeved that Pete killed his pop) and an up and coming photographer out to steal his job. If all that wasn’t enough, Spidey is also out to propose to his struggling-actress girlfriend, Mary Jane Watson, who is jealous of an over-zealous blonde- bombshell Spidey fan named Gwen Stacey. Seems like a lot to cram into one movie, doesn't it? It is. There is just too darn much going on! Haden-Church’s Sandman steals every scene and James Franco plays the dual-minded Harry Osborne to perfection, but both could probably be cut from the film altogether. Dunst’s perform- ance has all the life of a dead trout, and Maguire’s turn as the evil ooze-infested Peter Parker is only good for a few cheap laughs. The main plot of Peter Parker fighting off the ooze (and subsequently Topher Grace as the ooze-infested Venom) gets bogged down by too much secondary action, and even though the action scenes are just as spectacular as they were in the first two, somehow they just aren’t as satisfying. The movie stutters to a rather predictable and corny ending, and I left the theatre thinking “I just spent ten bucks on that?” On the official In Touch scale, with five Tiger Paws meaning “it’s worth a full price ticket” and one Paw meaning “wait until it comes to television,” Spider-Man 3 gets one and a half paws. Wait until this one comes to the Astro III or catch a cheap matinee if you must. Let’s hope summer’s other sequels: Shrek the Third and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, fare better than our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
