This is a bit like John Howards’ 2c reduction in the petrol tax to ease the pump price of fuel. When John Howard introduced that reduction in the fuel excise, prices at the pump varied up to 15 cents per litre depending on the day of the week and the particular service station one used. Of course there was no notable change in petrol prices but it cost the Government billions in lost revenue over time. All of this shows that Governments can do very little to control prices, nor should they even try. This is not Communist Russia or Venezuela. Yet, here we are headed toward that kind of stupidity. The Command Economy; an oxymoron if ever there was one. Unless we can achieve a Government which understands basic economics and the proper role of the Federal Government we will continue to have politicians who believe they can fix everything and react to every stupid whinge in the hope of being popular and re-elected. They insult the electorate and their puny interference in the economy is only a distraction from good Government. The best they could do is reduce the taxation burden on businesses and the wage earner and balance this by removing all the so called income redistribution measures such as the ridiculous non- taxable income threshold and nil tax on old farts.
