MARDER* INTRODUCTION Popular culture thrives on a portrayal of evil as murder, mayhem, and violence. Today's movies try to "outdo" predecessors with gruesome acts committed by egregious monsters.I Unfortunately, this media depiction of evil has lost its power to explore the much greater evil that humankind faces when societies destroy, impoverish, and enslave on a massive scale as a result of small actions taken by ordinary citizens. Hannah Arendt cap- tured this evil in her phrase "the banality of evil."'2 Ironically, the phrase and its meaning have become banal-too often repeated to form the basis for depictions by the media, which must always strive for the new and dif- ferent.

The American Century Theater presents JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG WRITTEN BY: ABBY MANN YOUR HONOR, THE CASE IS UNUSUAL IN THAT THE DEFENDANTS ARE CHARGED WITH CRIMES COMMITTED IN THE NAME OF THE LAW. THESE MEN, TOGETHER WITH THEIR DECEASED OR FUGITIVE COLLEAGUES, ARE THE EMBODIMENT OF WHAT PASSED FOR JUDGMENT IN THE THIRD REICH. AS JUDGES ON THE BENCH YOU WILL BE SITTING IN JUDGMENT OF JUDGES IN THE DOCK. THIS IS AS IT SHOULD BE. FOR ONLY A JUDGE KNOWS HOW MUCH MORE A COURT IS THAN A COURTROOM. IT IS A PROCESS AND A SPIRIT. IT IS THE HOUSE OF LAW. THE DE FENDANTS KNEW THIS TOO. THEY KNEW COURTROOMS WELL. THEY SAT IN THEIR BLACK ROBES. AND THEY DISTORTED AND THEY PERVERTED AND THEY DESTROYED JUSTICE AND LAW IN GERMANY. THEY ARE, PERHAPS MORE THAN OTHERS, GUILT Y OF COMPLICITY IN MURDERS, TORTURES, ATROCITIES – THE MOST CRUEL AND DEVASTATING THIS WORLD HAS EVER SEEN. THEIR MINDS WERE NOT WARPED AT AN EARLY AGE. THEY HAD ATTAINED MATURITY LONG BEFORE HITLER’S RISE TO POWER. THEY EMBRACED THE IDEOLOGIES OF THE THIRD REICH AS EDUCATED ADULTS. THEY, MOST OF ALL, SHOULD HAVE VALUED JUSTICE. HERE THEY WILL RECEIVE THE JUSTICE TH EY DENIED OTHERS. THEY WILL BE JUDGED ACCORDING TO THE EVIDENCE PRESENTED IN THIS COURTROOM. THE PROSECUTION ASKS NOTHING MORE. MAY IT PLEASE THE TRIBUNAL. IT IS NOT ONLY A GREAT HONOR BUT ALSO A GREAT CHALLENGE FOR AND ADVOCATE TO AID THIS TRIBUNAL IN ITS TASK. THE AVOWED PURPOSE OF THIS TRIBUNAL IS TO FIND A CODE OF JUSTICE THE WHOLE WORLD WILL BE RESPONSIBLE TO.

  • TWELVE ANGRY MEN REGINALD ROSE (1920-2002) Was Born and Grew up in New York City
Table of Contents Title Page Copyright Page Introduction ACT I ACT II Furniture and Property List Lighting Plot Effects Plot FOR THE BEST IN PAPERBACKS, LOOK FOR THE TWELVE ANGRY MEN REGINALD ROSE (1920-2002) was born and grew up in New York City. After Pearl Harbor he enlisted, and served in the Philippines and Japan as a First Lieutenant until 1946. Writing since he was a teenager, he sold the first of his many television plays, The Bus to Nowhere, in 1950. He was called for jury duty for the first time in 1954. It was a manslaughter case and the jury argued bitterly for eight hours before bringing in a unanimous verdict. He decided this was a powerful situation on which to base a television play, and wrote Twelve Angry Men as a live one-hour drama for CBS’s Studio One. Its impact led to the film version in 1957, and he received Oscar nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Picture (as coproducer). The stage version was first produced in 1964, and revised versions in 1996 and 2004. In 1997 it was filmed for Showtime. Other TV plays include The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners, Thunder on Sycamore Street, The Cruel Day, A Quiet Game of Cards, The Sacco-Vanzetti Story, Black Monday, Dear Friends, Studs Lonigan, The Rules of Marriage, and the award-winning Escape from Sobibor. Rose created, supervised, and wrote many of the episodes of the TV series The Defenders (1961-1965). His films include Crime in the Streets, Dino, Man of the West, The Man in the Net, Baxter!, Somebody Killed Her Husband, The Wild Geese, The Sea Wolves, and the film version of Whose Life Is It Anyway? He published Six Television Plays; The Thomas Book, written for children; and a memoir, Undelivered Mail.

Marshall #4, Robert Webber #12, Jack Warden #7, Ed Begley #10, Jack Klugman #5, Joseph Sweeney #9, Henry Fonda #8, John Fiedler #2, Martin Balsam #1, and Edward Binns #6 12 Angry Men (1957, Not Rated) Directed by Sidney Lemut, Written by Reginald Rose Available on DVD through Netflix A jury holdout attempts to prevent a miscarriage of justice by forcing his colleagues to reconsider the evidence. Twelve Angry Men is a courtroom drama broadcast initially as a television play in 1954. The following year it was adapted for the stage, and in 1957 was made into a film. It has since had numerous remakes, adaptations, and tributes. Selected in 2007 for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant,” it was rated as the second-best courtroom drama ever (after To Kill a Mockingbird) by the American Film Institute. What a Character-Study Is Meant to Be (IMDB User Review, 8 June 2002) Intense courtroom drama having 12 very different people, all males, struggle with a murder case involving a young Puerto Rican boy that seems cut-and-dried. However, Juror 8 (Henry Fonda) does not believe it to be as sure-fire as it appears. He votes not guilty and what follows is a chain of events that will test the views, beliefs and thoughts of the other 11 members. Fonda is great, but Lee J. Cobb steals every scene (and that is not easy to do in a film like this).

Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose 1 Leadership What is leadership? Who makes a good leader? What are the qualities of a strong leader? Here are several points to consider when reading the play and discussing leadership: 1. the ability to speak out, take a risk, act on one’s convictions 2. the ability to stand by oneself on an issue, even if there is no support 3. the ability to break from the crowd or be a role model for the crowd even if it is unpopular 4. the ability to act on, or voice, a concern on the behalf of others; being an advocate for others who may not have or feel they have a voice Add your own ideas about what makes a strong leader in the space below. 2 Twelve Angry Men “Courage” four corner exercise Respond as honestly as possible to the following statements by circling your response. 1. • 1 the Analysis of the Movie 12 Angry Men It Is Important for a Leader of A
1 The Analysis of the Movie 12 Angry Men LEADERSHIP It is important for a leader of a group to recognize and to know how to deal with the various stages of group formation and it is also helpful to recognize the various ineffective roles that might be adopted by individual members of the group either temporarily or throughout the group task. There are six general self-roles that might come into play during group task work. These include the Aggressor, the Blocker, the Joker, the Avoider, the Self-Confessor and the Recognition Seeker. Juror 3 is demonstrated as an aggressor to the greatest degree. He continuously attacks his fellow jurors for their opinions regardless of the veracity of their claims and obviously without having first considered their words. Juror 8 is the best example of a blocker, consistently bringing up counterarguments to every piece of evidence that is provided in the case and setting himself up as the lone opposition to a guilty verdict. Juror 10 is a good example of a joker since he is always disrupting the work of the group. By recognizing various personalities that make up a group and identifying various stages of the group development, group leaders are more capable of handling the dynamics that may arise. This is particularly important within all professions, as groups likely to be led will frequently involve highly personal, sensitive and sometimes controversial issues. Being able to predict group behavior and understanding the various personality types that may emerge will help the leader to validate the claims of the individuals while keeping the group productive and positive.

  • 12 Angry Men' Is a Terrific Film
GOOD FILM, BAD JURY CHARLES D. WEISSELBERG* INTRODUCTION 12 Angry Men' is a terrific film. Henry Fonda portrays Juror #8, the lone holdout. He manages to turn around eleven other jurors who have already made up their minds to convict the defendant in a capital murder case. Fonda gives a powerful performance. The American Film Institute rates Fonda's Juror #8 as fifteenth on its list of the greatest fifty movie heroes of all time. 2 During his fabled career, Fonda played other legends, including the young Abraham Lincoln, Tom Joad, the President of the United States (twice), Admiral Chester Nimitz (twice), "Mr. Roberts," and two celebrated Clarences of the law-Clarence Darrow and Clarence Earl Gideon.3 Who can resist Fonda as still another heroic figure, doggedly pursuing the truth? The late actor radiated honesty and integrity. His face was an affidavit. I'm pleased to participate in this commemoration of the fiftieth anni- versary of 12 Angry Men. It is a wonderful movie with a remarkable en- semble cast, featuring a riveting actor with an unassuming sense of justice. Director Sidney Lumet and writer Reginald Rose produced and shot a tightly-written, suspenseful drama. Let us cheer their accomplishments. But we should celebrate 12 Angry Men for what it is-great and engaging thea- tre. Let us not claim that the movie stands for something more. It should not be our ideal of an American jury. * Professor of Law, University of California School of Law (Boalt Hall) and Faculty Co-Chair, Berkeley Center for Criminal Justice. Many thanks to Nancy Marder and the editors of the Chicago-Kent Law Review, particularly John New and Kathryn Vikingstad.
