Ihe study area consists of an uplifted platform (La Breña, ~140 m) bounded by two major NW-SE faults that have created two subsiding areas: Meca in the west and Barbate in the east. Ihe areas of subsidence have favoured the accumulation of a thick morphosedimentary sequence consisting of (in ascending stratigraphic order) beach, alluvial, and aeolian deposits, which repeatedly underwent soil-forming processes. Ihis study outlines the palaeogeographical evolution of the area over the last ~ 140 ka, as deduced from geomorphological mapping associated with a range of laboratory analyses (mineralogical, geochemical, magnetic susceptibility, and soil micromorphology analyses), optically stimulated luminescence (OSL dating), and existing U-Ih dating. Special attention has been paid to the alluvial unit, made up ofvertically stacked sandy sheet-flood deposits with interbedded red paleosols. OSL ages suggest that sediment supply to the alluvial/coastal environments took place mainly at the end of the two most recent glacial periods (Oxygen Isotopic Stage [GIS] 6 and OIS 3/OIS 2) and during the last interglacial period (end of OIS 5). Ihis means that although alluvial sedimentation took place at times of relatively high sea level, these were not times of highstand because very high sea levels (like the present) allow marine erosion of the distal part of the fans (fan toes), cutting c1iffed coasts. Ihe repeated occurrence of paleo sois in the alluvial sequence seems to indicate a recurren ce of environmental changes that modified the feedback relationships between the catchment and the coastal areas. Ihese changes are recorded in repeated oscillations of soil parameters, and are revealed from the results of geochemical and environmental magnetism analyses. We associate repeated pedogenesis and alluvial sedimentation with the glacial/interglacial global c1imatic changes due to an oscillating humidity/ aridity ratio rather than with cyc1icity in thermal regime. 1. Introduction cliffs of the Gulf of Cadiz, on the southern Spanish coast (Eg. 1 ). Outstanding examples are the Asperillo (Huelva Province) and The sedimentary record of the evolving coastal sedimentary Barbate-Meca (Cádiz Province) cliffs. However, despite the excellent environments during the last interglacial-last glacial-present inter outcrops, dating the dominantly-terrestrial deposits has proved to be glacial transitions is well exposed along several tracts of the coastal very unreliable, thus hampering any precise interpretation of the relations between processesjmorphologies and temporal evolution. It has a size of 97.919 has. and it includes 4 municipaities: Tarifa, Algeciras, Los Barrios and Barbate, all of them belonging to the Cadiz province, in the south end of Andalusia. It can be divided in three big zones, very different in terms of geography, economy and landscape: the coast and the mountains of the Atlantic side, the Mediterranean coast with the Bay of Algeciras and the inland part of the “Los Barrios” municipality. His geographical context is characterized by a soft climate, though windswept. It is a not specially populated space, with unstable demographic trend. The economy is in a recessive phase which generates a widespread unemployment situation. Exist four principal cores of population: Barbate, Tarifa, Los Barrios and Algeciras, which is the major one. They communicate between them through a local road that runs in an east-west, parallel to the coast. There is not a railway and the most nearby airports are those of Seville, Malaga and Jerez.

  • The Battle of Trafalgar
The Battle of Trafalgar When was the Battle Of Trafalgar? It happened on 21 October 1805 off Cape Trafalgar on the coast of south west Spain. Who was involved? The battle was between the Royal Navy and a force made up of Spanish and French ships. The Royal Navy, under the command of Admiral Horatio Nelson, had 27 ships. The French and Spanish forces, under Admiral Pierre de Villeneuve, had 33 ships. Why did the battle take place? The French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was gearing up to invade England. He had already taken over other parts of Europe and wanted to expand his empire. The two sides were in hot pursuit of each other, then they met up at Trafalgar. What happened at the battle? The French and Spanish ships were lined up in a row. Instead of lining up against them, Nelson decided to Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory attack them by forming two columns of ships, with the aim of pushing through the enemy lines and separating their ships into smaller groups. As the battle started, Nelson made a signal, using flags, to his men from his ship, HMS Victory. It said: "England expects that every man will do his duty'. He later followed that with: "Engage the enemy more closely'. The Royal Navy succeeded in piercing the enemy line. By 4.30pm, the battle was over as the last of the French and Spanish forces surrendered or were overwhelmed. What happened to Nelson? It was a great victory for the Royal Navy, but they lost the man who had led the attack.

A scenic classification was utilised that can rate sites as Class I (natural areas of great scenic beauty) to Class V (urbanised areas of poor scenic interest), but, for this study, only natural sites of great scenic value were investigated; 41 sites were included in Class I, 9 in Class II and, apart from four, all of the sites were under some feature of protection—managed by the Andalusia Environmental Agency (RENPA, in Spanish). Sites belong to the Natural Park Cabo de Gata-Nijar (24% of sites), the Natural Park of Gibraltar Strait (18%), the Natural Place Acantilado de Maro-Cerro Gordo (12%), and the Natural and National parks of Doñana (8%).
