Dear Parents/Guardians,

As we head towards the end of the Summer term there is no let up in the events and activities we pack into each school week. This week has been no different. Year 10 have started their 2 week work experience. Some students have popped back in to tell us how it is going. They are loving it but didn’t realise how hard working actually was. Welcome to the real world Year 10. Hope the experience is a fruitful one.

This week also saw our annual Sports Day. If you visit our Facebook page, you can see the time and effort the site team and PE department put into making this year a year to remember. There was a multitude of team events for students to participate in, as well as the traditional athletic events. There was also the staff tug of war event which pitted staff against staff. This was a source of great amusement for students. To see their teachers take the strain with no one really knowing who won. The afternoon also was a buzz with cheering for the athletes who were hoping to to bring the medals home for their house. Which house won? No one knows….. yet! The results will be announced in the end of term assemblies in 2 weeks time. Who knows we might have some future Olympians in our midst.

One student on the path already is Aiden Browning. On Sunday 1st July Aiden took part in the first weekend of the Development Meet at Waterlooville. He swam in four individual events achieving 4PBs and won three age group medals - Gold in the 50m Butterfly, Gold in the 100m Individual Medley, Silver in the 100m Backstroke and 4x50 Freestyle Relay Team who took the Gold Medal. Now that’s an achievement! Congratulations to our amazing Aiden - we are all so very, very proud of you! Keep up the hard work - next stop, the Olympics!

Even though the week has seen lots of sporting activities and talk about football, there has also been some great learning going on in lessons too. A number of Year 9 students also got the chance to visit for two days to take part in several taster lessons, this will allow them to get an overview of what college life, and college courses, are like. This also involved them visiting Oxford for a tour around the university. A very aspirational visit!

Year 8 produced some stunning work in Science this week . If you visit our Facebook page, you will see some stunning photos of stomata found on the bottom of leaves. The stomata in the photo are open as they are allowing an exchange to occur. This is where carbon dioxide enters the leaf and oxygen leaves the leaf. Plants open and close these at different times of the day. Wow great work, well done to these Year 8 scientists.

The Year 8 steel band were out flying the flag for Crestwood this week too. They visited many of our feeder schools on a music roadshow. They have packed loads of gigs into a few days. Well done to the students and staff involved. The effort it takes not only to perform but to set and disassemble the pans shows a very high level of dedication. We are very proud of you all.

Four of our fantastic Year 7 linguists have been working hard to prepare for the Eastleigh Consortium’s annual Cultural Quiz. This was held at The School this week. Supported by Ms Andueza and Mr Tully, the students did battle on behalf of Crestwood. They were up against students from Wyvern, Romsey, Mountbatten and Swanmore. A very close race, but we came second after a great effort from them all!

Finally, Year 7 also got the chance to tackle Macbeth in a very unusual way. When Macbeth met Jeremy Kyle: 'my wife made

me murder all my friends'! Miss. Harding said the students were fantastic with their performances which allowed them to explore some of the major themes in the play. Lastly, a few dates for your diaries: ● Please note that our INSET Days for the remainder of the calendar year are as follows: Thursday 19th July, Friday 20th July, Monday 23rd July, Monday 3rd September and Tuesday 4th September 2018. Year 7 and Year 11 will return to school on Wednesday 5th September, with the whole school returning on Thursday 6th September. ● CCIA are holding a Summer Fair on Saturday 14th July 2018, 12.00-4.00pm on the Shakespeare Campus. As well as a fun-filled day for all the family with music, entertainment, stalls, food and drink, if you run a small business and want to run a stall, please contact [email protected]

We hope you have a happy and restful weekend.

Sports Day

SPORTS DAY - SPORTS JOURNALISTS SESSION Reported by: Jaimee-Leigh Lucas and Katelin Cheveaux. (Helped by Mrs Holdaway) Crestwood School Sports Day It’s the 4th of July! Despite the weather being overcast today, spirits are sunny. The athletes won’t overheat which is very good for them. The school has provided free water bottles, free water and sun cream to protect everyone and cool them down. The teachers look as though they are having as much fun as the pupils. However, some teachers seem to be very irritated as a swarm of flies follow them everywhere! At least one pupil has had to go home after injuring his Achilles tendon. We were not really surprised by this as he ran like the wind! There are a range of sports for pupils to choose from, including: American Football, Table , Rounders, Trampolining. Athletics heats are running all day. For those less athletic pupils, there is a lot for them to do. Some people opt to do artwork and for others, they are looking at healthy eating options in Food Tech. For people like us, there is the Sports Journalist session. We have enjoyed interviewing pupils and staff and the filming is hilarious! All in all, we believe that this is the best Sports Day ever! There are pictures and film clips to follow.

Year 8 Steel Pans - Feeder School Tour

Science

Mr Neil’s Year 8 class have been planning their own lessons for a while now and on thursday it was the first of them. Lessons were based on the science of super hero’s by Neil and organ systems by Letisha, Chloe and Felicity. They were well planned and well delivered - even Mr Neil learnt a thing or two!

There will be more lessons delivered before the end of term - look out on our Facebook page for updates.

The amazing photos (below) were taken by Chelsea, Izzy and Katie in Mr Neil’s Year 9 Science class. These stunning images show a stomata found on the bottom of leaves. The stomata in the photos are open as they are allowing an exchange to occur. This is where carbon dioxide enters the leaf and oxygen leaves the leaf. Plants open and close these at different times of the day.
