three game series
against China
25.05.11
Basketball Australia in cooperation with Basketball Queensland, is excited to announce that the Australian Jayco Opals will be facing off in a three-game series with the Chinese women’s national basketball team, when they travel to Queensland in late July.
The international games will serve as a key hit-out for the Jayco Opals with the FIBA Oceania Olympic Qualifying series with New Zealand in early September fast approaching. The tour is also an exciting occasion for the sport of basketball in Queensland, with the tour being played exclusive in the Sunshine State, moving from game one in Logan to Townsville for game two, before concluding in Cairns for the third and final contest. ―With the limited time the Chinese national team has here in Australia, it was fitting to schedule all games in Queensland,‖ said Basketball Australia CEO Larry Sengstock. ―Queensland is a passionate basketball state. You only need to look at how the Queensland- based teams performed in our National leagues this past season to get a feel for how strong the sport is up north — they were the only state to have teams in both our NBL and WNBL finals series.‖ ―With that in mind, we know that they will seize the opportunity to come out and see our Jayco Opals take on one of the top basketball nations in China.‖ The Jayco Australian Opals will face-off against China on 24 July in Logan, on the 28 July in Townsville and then in Cairns on the 30 July to wrap the series. Basketball Queensland CEO Graham Burns was excited by the announcement, stating that it was critically important that world-class games reach the northern part of the country, an area passionate about the sport that continues to produce considerable domestic success. ―It’s good for us all round because it gives us some world-class games which we’ve needed for some time,‖ said Burns. ―You’ve got to have a pathway and you’ve got to have something to aspire to, so it’s very important to have that sort of exposure in Queensland. We are very blessed to have three NBL and two WNBL teams, so it’s good to take the next step and have the Australian team playing up here as well,‖ he said. While in Logan and Townsville, the Chinese team will also line up against the Logan Thunder (25 July) and Townsville Fire (27 July) WNBL teams, giving them five exciting contests before they return home at the end of July. Jayco Opals V China Schedule:
LOGAN July 24: Australian Jayco Opals vs China – Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre July 25: Logan Thunder vs China
TOWNSVILLE July 27: Australian Jayco Opals vs China – The new Murray sports stadium, Townsville RSL Stadium
July 28: Townsville Fire vs China
CAIRNS July 30: Australian Jayco Opals vs China – Aumuller St. Manunda
