June 2021 Monthly Catalogue

Welcome to the June 2021 edition of the NHBS Monthly Catalogue, which lists all new titles added to our website in the last month.

We have another excellent selection of bird books this month, including several field guides. Bloomsbury is publishing Feathers: An Identification Guide to the Feathers of Western European Birds in November, Oxford University Press will publish the second edition of Guide to the Birds of China in August, and in October John Beaufoy will publish A Naturalist's Guide to the Birds of the Middle East and the second edition of A Photographic Field Guide to the Birds of Canberra and the High Country. Two privately published books are Estrildid Finches of the World: A Photographic, Descriptive and Factual Guide to All 34 Genera of Estrildidae, coming in October, and Birding in Murcia: Where & What to See, which is now in stock. Other ornithology titles of interest are Hummingbirds: A Celebration of Nature's Jewels, coming from WILDGuides in October, and the paperback of Thinking Like a Parrot: Perspectives from the Wild, due November from the University of Chicago Press.

For other vertebrate groups, there are a few books each. Lynx has just published Mammals of Madagascar: with the Comoros, the Seychelles, Réunion and Mauritius, while Oxford University Press will publish How Giraffes Work in August. October will be a busy month with one title from Princeton University Press, Turtles of the World: A Guide to Every Family, and three titles from John Beaufoy: the second edition of A Naturalist’s Guide to the Mammals of Australia, A Photographic Field Guide to the Amphibians of Sri Lanka, and the third edition of A Naturalist's Guide to the Snakes of Southeast Asia.

Two noteworthy titles on invertebrates are Conservation Assessment of Scarabaeine Dung Beetles in South Africa, and Namibia: IUCN Red List Categories, Atlas and Ecological Notes, just published by SANBI, and Crabs: A Global , due October from Princeton University Press.

For botanists, there is the new BSBI Handbook Broomrapes of Britain & Ireland that is available now, while Wildflowers of the Sefton Coast will be published by the Lancashire & Cheshire Fauna Society in June. Tree-top scientist Meg Lowman chronicles her research in The Arbornaut: A Life Discovering the Eighth Continent in the Trees Above Us, due August from Allen & Unwin. Mycologists, meanwhile, can look out for Corticoid Fungi of Europe, Volume 1: Acanthobasidium – Gyrodontium, which is available now and is the first of three planned books. Then there are a number of general field guides and natural history guides. In September we have Japan: The Natural History of an Asian Archipelago from WILDGuides and Wild Mull: A Natural History of the Island and its People from Pelagic Publishing, and in October we have Habitats of the World: A Field Guide for Birders, Naturalists, and Ecologists from Princeton University Press and A Photographic Field Guide to Wildlife of India from John Beaufoy.

On the topic of wildlife conservation, look out for The Last Lions of Africa: Stories from the Frontline in the Battle to Save a Species, due August from Allen & Unwin, the paperback of Bringing Back the Beaver: The Story of One Man's Quest to Rewild Britain's Waterways, due September from Chelsea Green, and the third edition of Conservation and the Genomics of Populations, due October from Oxford University Press. Readers interested in climate change and other environmental issues will want to take a look at Jane Goodall's The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for an Endangered Planet, due November from Viking, the paperback of Sir Martin Rees's On the Future: Prospects for Humanity, due October from Princeton University Press, and Meltdown: The Earth Without Glaciers, due December from Oxford University Press.

For ecologists, we have Predator Ecology: Evolutionary Ecology of the Functional Response in September from Oxford University Press and Ocean Ecology: Marine Life in the Age of Humans in August from Princeton University Press. For evolutionary we have How Birds Evolve: What Science Reveals about Their Origin, Lives and Diversity, due November from Princeton University Press, and the paperback of Kindred: Neanderthal Life, Love, Death and Art, due August from Bloomsbury.

Finally, good reading comes in the shape of two environmental history titles from Princeton University Press that are due November: Plagues upon the Earth: Disease and the Course of Human History and When the Sahara Was Green: How Our Greatest Desert Came to Be, and two nature writing titles: Islands of Abandonment: Life in the Post-Human Landscape from Harper Collins, available now, and the paperback of Magdalena: River of Dreams – A Story of Colombia, due August from Vintage.
