29 Romania 29.1 Summary of Coal Industry 29.1.1 ROLE OF COAL IN ROMANIA Coal accounts for 29 percent of energy production in Romania (EIA, 2014). Romania’s proven coal reserves are estimated at about 291 million tonnes (Mmt) and the country ranks 20th worldwide in coal production (see Table 29-1). More than 80 percent of Romanian lignite reserves can be mined profitably in opencast mines, while the remaining 20 percent require underground mining (Euracoal, 2014; WEC, 2000). Table 29-1. The coal deposits are grouped into four zones: Zone I, mainly located in the Southern Carpathian Mountains, includes all the high-grade coal such as anthracite, pit coal (higher ranking than brown coal – bituminous and sub-bituminous), and brown coal (lignite) from the Petrosani, Anina and Tebea-Brad basins. Zone II, located within the Pre-Carpathian creep, between the Olt and Valea Buzaului rivers, includes the lignite deposits of Campulung, Sotanga, Filipestii de Padure, and Ceptura. The coal basins of the Eastern Carpathian are also included within this zone: Baraolt-Virghis (lignite) and Comanesti-Bacau (brown coal). More than 90 percent of Romanian coal reserves are located within Zone II, namely in the mining basins of the Oltenia Region. -

The impact of transition periods is experienced by the local population and economy as a result of mining activities closure and dismissal of a large number of workers followed by diversification of employment and career reorientation opportunities. The aim of the paper is to highlight the impact generated by closure of mining operations on local society and economy as well as identifying opportunities for harmonious development of communities in the Jiu Valley. Following the assessment of the social impact of mining activities closure, we found a rising tendency of unemployment rate among the middle-aged population that did not benefit from vocational retraining and the growing tendency of young people to leave the region for strictly economic reasons leading to widespread social aging. 1 Restructuring of mi ning activity in Romania and the Jiu Valley Jiu Valley is a micro-region in Hunedoara County, located between the Retezat and Parâng Mountains (fig.1). It consists of 3 cities: Petrila, Uricani and Aninoasa and 3 municipalities - Petroșani, Lupeni and Vulcan. JOSEPHE II CENSUS OF 1784-1787 IN ZARAND COUNTY Ionuţ-Cosmin CODREA The land of Zarand is a well-delimited geographic and ethnographic area, with a well-defined historical identity, lying between the western, mountainous parts of the old Zarand County and the eastern plains. The western part of the Apuseni Mountains rises as a row of mountainous massifs, isolated by broad alluvial depressions, which look like bays on a map and are actually intermountain plains. Through these tectonic depressions is made the link between the valleys of the Black Criş and the Mureş, the so-called Deva - Beiuş depression corridor.1 This region stretches along the White Criş, marked in the north by the Codru Moma Mountains and by the mountains of Bihor and Zarand, while to the south by the Metaliferi Mountains. Geographers recognise, generally, the unitary character of this Zarand “County,” although between Gurahonţ and Leasa the continuity is recognised only in the White Criş Valley. In the east, the intermountain valley (also called the Brad Basin) continues until Săcărâmb, in a region that generically belongs to the Metaliferi Mountains, while downstream it continues until Gurahonţ.2 In the 18th century, administratively speaking, the Land of Zarand had reached the end of a long journey and had turned from a part of the old County of Zarand (constituted around the eponymous fortress in the 12th and 13th centuries) into a county in its own right, through the “Karolin Resolution” of 31 December 1732, issued by Emperor Charles VI.3 The decision to carry out the Joseph II Census of 1784-1787 is part of a set of administrative measures implemented by the monarch “Aufklärer” Joseph II, which he wanted to be a more vigorous continuation of the reforms started by Maria Theresa. -

The rural area of Hunedoara County has a high agro-tourism potential due, firstly, to the very beautiful landscapes and secondly to the numerous tourist objectives that can be found on the County territory. Starting from the preferences of tourists and investors that were identified through previous research, we analyzed the agritourism potential of the most depopulated 20 villages in Hunedoara County. This analysis aimed at identifying and scaling ten indicators that were used later in the development of a Fishbein-Rosenberg mathematical model. Since their founding at the end of the XIXth century, the mining companies that have extracted coal in the Jiu Valley have tried to guarantee, though a private system of social security, pension rights for all of its employees, workers as well as clerks. This private system of social security would perpetuate itself, in the case of clerks working for Valea Jiului mining companies, though the interwar years up to the instauration of the Communist regime, when another pension scheme was established for those employees in the workforce. In this study we will seek to uncover the way in which these mining companies' clerks' Pension Houses were constituted and functioned after the First World War. They would operate on the basis of their own rules/statutes, would be under the leadership of a Committee chosen among the members of the Pension House, but also under the supervision of the Administrative Council of the mining company. Due to the levies placed upon their members, subsidies given by the mining companies, and other income, the Pension Houses managed throughout the entire period in question to guarantee honorable pensions for their members, and also for their widows and descendants. In order to provide the different types of employees' pensions, within the Valea Jiului Mining companies there would operate, up to the Interwar period, workers' Fraternal Houses – Bruderlade - including those for cases of illness and accidents and the Clerks' pension Funds. -
