The Midlands Diabetes Interest Group strives for the recognition, promotion and protection Mission of the health of people with Diabetes, through the provision of support, education and practical advice in both the community in which they live and all accessible gatherings. Objectives a) To advance the education of the general public in Gweru and surrounding areas of the relating to the condition of diabetes. b) To lobby for the welfare and provision of proper care and support for diabetic people. c) To raise awareness of the needs of people with diabetes in communities in the Midlands Province. d) To raise funds for the sustenance of diabetes programmes in the Province. e) To facilitate training programmes for diabetic and interested people for the advancement of the awareness for diabetes. f) To strengthen entrepreneurial efforts of diabetic people for self-sustenance.

Midlands Diabetes Interest Group (MidDIG) Organization Profile 1 of 5 Activities of a) Training Programmes Facilitating training in capacity building of health care providers, volunteers and peer the educators in all the eight Districts of the Midlands Province in the care and management of organisation Diabetes. b) Education Advancing education to diabetic patients and their primary care givers in the care and control of Diabetes. c) Awareness Community awareness at workplaces, churches, schools and social gatherings. Conducting sporting activities to promote healthy living through physical activity. Production of posters, fliers and billboards to raise awareness on the signs and symptoms, control, management and complications of diabetes in communities of the Midlands Province. d) Raising Funds Conducting fund-raising activities for the sustenance of Diabetes programmes in the Province. e) Advocacy Strategies through which MidDIG addresses cross cutting issues that arise from the above core programmes. This also involves lobbying for the welfare and provision of proper care and support for diabetic people. f) Entrepreneurship training Provision of sustainable and profitable means of livelihoods; training of Income Generating Activities and financial management; support to Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) to attain vocational skills and provision of basic start up tool kits to affected children in the communities. Awareness Activities More than 33 000 Ended people have been reached in all the Districts of the Midlands Province through various awareness programmes. These include road shows, sports galas, workplace, schools and church awareness sessions, and the Midlands Agricultural Show. We have also conducted 2 successful Diabetes Walks in Gweru.

Midlands Diabetes Interest Group Prospects

The Midlands Diabetes Interest Group’s near future prospects are as follows:

i. To establish a full fledged Diabetes Centre where Diabetes Patients will get treatment and supplies specific to Diabetes. The centre will also have Sporting Facilities catering for the development of a culture of sport and physical activity in the population. ii. To spread Diabetes education to other provinces in Zimbabwe, iii. To ensure that ordinary Zimbabweans have knowledge of the causes, symptoms and dangers of Diabetes Mellitus, iv. To advocate strongly for the health welfare of Diabetic People, v. To reach out to Diabetic people in disadvantaged places, vi. To promote sustainable physical activity to reduce the impact of Diabetes on patients,

To cultivate entrepreneurial orientation on diabetic people and their primary care givers, ix. To impact lifestyle changes in the general populace of Zimbabwe to reduce the negative impact of Diabetes. x. To cultivate a spirit of nutritional knowledge and restraint from bad nutritional habits.
