This Committee is made up of like minded community members, all volunteers, whose mission is to improve the standard of presentation of amenity landscapes, parks and gardens (including the foreshore), streetscapes and associated infrastructure of .

The group acknowledges the wonderful work that has been done in the past by generous individuals but now its time to dream big. They have secured the backing of both Edithburgh Progress and Council with Progress supplying seeding money for the foreshore. The next job in their sights is planting mass colour in the median strip for a Day at the Burgh in November. They are looking to source funding for some major ide- as. The committee members are Garry Weekley, Gary Dinham, Troy Johnson, Terry Braund, Sam Bauer and John Weekley.

WELCOME TO THE NEW COOBOWIE CARAVAN PARK MANAGERS

“Coobowie Caravan Park

Since the 1st of May 2021, Steven and I began our journey as Park Managers. We have a beautiful park with friendly patrons, the most stunning sunrise views over the ocean and sunsets over the fields behind us.

Steve has spent many hours bringing the park back to life. The grass is looking much greener, the gardens well manicured and the amenities are well kept.

Kristy has been busy in the office taking plenty of bookings, meeting some fantastic people, as well as updating our social media and website pages. We have been promoting local busi- nesses as much as possible and trying to promote the park and ourselves at every opportunity we get.

We have settled into our new home brilliantly and our 2 boys could not be any happier. We look forward to our future here at the park and building strong partnerships with travellers as well as our fellow locals.

-Kristy and Steve Evans”

MUSEUM NEWS

This month at the museum we were excited to welcome Mr Brenton Tancock from Mt Barker. He is a retired ex-serviceman having served in the navy aboard the HMAS Parra- matta, HMAS Melbourne and HMAS Stalwark.

Keryn Dawes & Brenton Tanock with the Clan Ranald exhibit

Allan Russell &.Brenton Tanock with the Clan Ranald Anchor One of his hobbies in retirement has been his involvement in the 72 Task Force Scale Model Ships Association. Through his interest in this group he has con- structed a model of the “Clan Ranald” and on the 15th of June he brought the model to Edithburgh to show members of the com- mittee. It is a stunning exhibit! Brenton has committed to returning to Edith- burgh with his model for this year’s “Day at the Burgh”. In November. If you get the chance, it is well worth a visit.

Discovered in 1977 Hydrothermal Vents are a “Hot” topic in Ocean Science. New forms of life are discov- ered every time we dive and collect around them. We think all life may have begun down there!! The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the USA owns ALVIN, a manned submersible that on the first of September 1985 discovered the Titanic.

ALVIN returning from -2515 metres with a pilot and two scientists aboard. ALVIN is a shining example of science and engineering, and can now dive to 6,000 metres.

This is a screen shot of a live feed by satellite from ALVIN to my laptop at home. I am directing the opera- tor of the arm to collect a sample from an active hydrothermal vent at -2515 metres. Samples were sent to Harvard University, packed in dry ice and then sent to me at Edithburgh. A number of new species were discovered in that sample, including those above living in tiny tubes of chitin (like prawn shells) on- ly1 millimetre long. Over the years more samples from ALVIN and Underwater Robots have arrived. NASA is testing robots with Woods Hole for missions to the moons of Jupiter. Searching for life in oceans 100 kilometres deep beneath the icy surface. Deep ocean exploration is a new frontier of scientific exploration on this, and other worlds. Encourage your kids to do Science. It is wonderful, rewarding for them, and brings rewards to us all. For more on hydrothermal vents visit my website www.protozoa.com.au. Welcoming new residents

A Community Consultation Breakfast held at Edithburgh in February offered the chance to share ideas on a wide range of issues with the aim of helping us all to build connections to support each other.

One of the very practical ideas put forward was the introduction of a “Welcome Pack” for new residents, initially within the ‘scenic triangle’ area which takes in Wool Bay, Coobowie, Edithburgh, Yorketown and Port Moorowie.

It will not only serve to show what a welcoming and friendly community we live in but provide infor- mation many new residents would be looking for as they settle into their new home.

The packs will include a copy of the Central & Southern Yorke Peninsula Visitors’ Guide, a map of SYP, copies of local newsletters including the COO-EE and Yorke Talk, plus as much information as we can gather on local special interest groups etc.

We are now looking for those groups - schools and community libraries, progress associations, craft and exercise groups, charity organisations, sporting clubs and local businesses to supply us with contact infor- mation and/or brochures that can be included in the special bags.

The packs will be given out through local Post Offices after all they are usually the first port of call for newcomers.

To have your information included contact Kay Barlow 0417 807 993 or Jenny Oldland on 0408 521 336 or email [email protected].

Birds of the Heel Jeffrey Robinson Spotted Harrier and a mouse

On a Saturday in mid-April, we went to admire the mural on the water tower. Just as we were getting back into the car, a juvenile Spotted Harrier flew by, flapping its wings slowly and remaining close to the ground – it was hunting. I decided to follow. It went across the field while I had to go to the cross roads and turn left. The Harrier landed briefly in one field, took off again carrying something. I looked like a large piece of grass. It crossed back across the road and into the field about 20- 30 metres from the car where it starting prancing in circles. We watched for several minutes before realising that it was play- ing with a mouse. Can you spot it?

 UNSUNG with Libby O’Donovan and Amelia Ryan – female rock and pop songs of the 60’s .. July 17 Edith- burgh Institute Ideal Mother’s Day gift – 2 tickets to July 17 musical cabaret called UNSUNG The musical show is centred on the fight for wom- an’s equality staring Amelia Ryan and Libby O’Donovan. This is a factual representation of the female activist Merle Thornton and Rosalie Bogner who in 1965 chained themselves to a hotel bar to protest the exclusion of serving women in public bars in Queensland. Thornton’s activities ultimately led to the founding of the Equal opportunities Asso- ciation for Women in 1973. As many mothers will recall life in the 1960’s this becomes a great “Mothers-Day” gift. An emotional walk down memory lane through song and narra- tion.

“BUTCHERY MADE EASIER”

Butchery can be very challenging, and I’ve got some hints, that I think will help, and hopefully excite some of you, and the best thing is, it’s cheaper on the wallet and that makes the weekly budget much nicer, which means more brewskis all round, and that’s gotta be a good thing.

CHICKEN THIGH FILLETS:- These aren’t too expensive, and are usually great for casseroles and curries, this is coz they don’t dry out like chicken breast does, it’s a working muscle, so takes to slow cooking beautifully, but is also brilliant on CHICKEN ROULADES, take a skinless thigh fillet, pop between cling film, and with a meat tenderiser, gently flatten it out quite thin, grab some Australian mustard and do a thin film on top of chicken, then 2 slices of Camembert cheese, and 3 basil leaves, roll up tight into a fat sausage, and roll up in glad wrap, tie the ends, and poach in simmering water for 15mins, cool for 15mins, then pop some butter in a pan, take cling wrap off your chicken roulade, and brown off gently, serve with wilted greens and baby carrots and turnips. A truly lovely dish which takes a relatively cheap cut of meat, and makes it special...... BEEF TORNEDOS:- Again not an expensive cut of meat, it is the beef used for schnitzels, normally topside which has been tenderised thru a machine which cuts little holes in it, or some minute steak, fry off some sliced mushrooms in a little erbutt with lemon and garlic, cook till all liquid has evaporated, lay your piece of meat on a board, and spread with blue vein cheese (or your choice of cheese), when the mushrooms have cooled, spread on top of cheese, (chilli is exceptionally brilliant with this dish) roll them up tightly and crumb them, I know this messy, but persevere and then roll up in cling film, swing round like a Xmas cracker and tie the ends tightly. Pop in the fridge for at least 3hrs, overnight is better tho. Heat some oil and butter, unwrap the tornado, dust again in breadcrumbs and cook gently till golden all over, serve with fresh tomato salad and baked potato...... STUFFED PORK MEDALLIONS:- Pork loin or fillet is perfect for these, trim your pork of any silver sinew, this is the dental floss of the animal kingdom, it never breaks down, so best to remove it and pass it on to someone with a cat or dog. Cut the pork into 2” rounds, take 1/2 a brown onion, 1/2 clove of garlic, a knob of butter and 4 green, peeled prawns, chop all of them fairly small, and then brown off in a pan gently, season well, cool down completely, take your medallion and cut a pocket inside, fairly deeply, take 2 tsps of your prawn mix and stuff it inside, close the pocket with a tooth pick, pop in the fridge for a hr or so, heat your pan or bbq, and cook 6 mins one side, 2 mins the other side and rest 2 mins before serving.....6-2-2, remove the tooth pick after it’s cooked, served with fried rice, and bokchoy, a nice little dish, that’s classy and not too pricey...... KANGAROO FILLET:- This is lean, easy on the wallet, beautiful meat, grab some rump or eye fillet, cut into inch thick, long strips, pour some olive oil into a container along with 1/2 tsp of freshly cracked pepper, and toss the strips of roo thru this, and pop in the fridge, grab an orange sweet potato, peel and cut into wedges, roast these off with a little olive oil from eth marinating roo, salt and some chopped long spring onions, bung in the oven on 200 and roast off till tender. Grab a small container and mix 5 tbsp of sweet chilli sauce with 1/2 bunch of chopped fine coriander, and a squeeze of lemon juice, mix well. Stoke up the bbq or frypan, it’s needs to be hot, lay the strips of roo in, and cook both sides 3 mins max, (Kangaroo is best served rare or medium rare), lay sweet potato’s and spring onions, in a nice pattern, lay roo on top, and top with sweet chilli/coriander sauce and serve with a rocket and blue vein cheese salad. This is to die for, Roo is especially lean meat which makes it perfect for diabetics, dieters, and as a great change.
