  YOU WANT YOUR LOCAL CHURCH TO BE THERE….. x Because you want your daughter to be married there x Because you want your children or grandchildren to be christened there x Because you’ve thought your funeral would be there x Because it’s unthinkable for our village not to have a church x Because you support the values the church espouses x Or any other of a hundred other reasons too…..

Our church members, who already give generously, and work hard on fund- raising throughout the year, have been asked to increase their giving, so that those who use our churches occasionally (and maybe that’s you) can know that your village church will be here for decades to come. But it costs over £150 per day – per day!- to keep our five parish churches (Askham Richard, , Long Marston, , Tockwith) open.

So we’re asking our villages to chip in. YOU can support your village church in one of the following ways- x Sponsor your village church for a day (£30) or a week (£210) x Make a one-off gift to your village church, and Gift-Aid it, please (see below) x Leave a legacy to your village church x Make a regular donation to your village church, and if you are a tax-payer, Gift-Aid it, so that the government gives us and extra 25p for every £1 donated.

2016 could not have been a busier year for Tockwith Church of the Epiphany as it celebrated its 150th birthday. As 2017 dawns we do not expect life to be quite as hecc as 2016 but we do know we will have to deal with several challenges not the least consideraon of how we are to deal with an interregnum and replacing Rev Roy who has given excellent service to the Parish of Marston Moor first as Curate, then as our Vicar. We were pleased to host the Confirmaon of six young people with the Bishop of Selby, The Right Reverend John Thomson. Bishop John of Selby, came along with his crocodile called Cedric! His talk about Cedric and John the Bapst was wonderful. The Bishop was able to explain the relevance of the confirmaon with the aid of Cedric and three key acons "Wake up”, “Make up” & “Take up". A message that was simple but very effecve and thought provoking. 330 adults and children came to our 4pm and 6pm Chrisngle services on Christmas Eve. The Church co-ordinated the visit to Tockwith School of the Prayer Bus. The Bus Stop exists to support and equip local Churches in their work with young people, communies and schools. The converted double decker bus is fied with consoles, a sweet shop and great coffee, and travels far and wide to help Churches support and provide for their local communies. The bus can be used within schools to support children and young people as part of the R.S. curriculum. We can do one-off or regular school visits and provide a variety of acvies. Using the bus as a ‘mobile prayer space’ has been parcularly popular with schools. The bus can be transformed to give children or young people a variety of interacve prayer acvies to enable them to explore faith, engage with world issues and develop their own values.

The bus can be booked for regular events, such as a weekly youth group, or for one off events, such as a community fesval. Some examples of how the bus has been used so far: • As a weekly community cafe and evening youth drop-in • A monthly youth event • Turned into a prayer space to take into local schools •Weeklong or weekend missions • Church and community events. Do you know anyone that has just moved into the village? Our aim is to make contact with them as soon as possible and tell them what we have to offer as a Church family. Our introducon is by way of delivering a Village and Parish News free of charge. Contact any member of the Church Council if you think someone may not have been seen.

The next “Let’s Do Lunch” at the Spoed Ox is on Thursday 12th January at 12.30. Please contact Mary Shaw on 359003 by Tuesday 10th January if you would like to book a place.

DONATE A BIBLE We have a scheme that allows families to donate a Bible to the Church dedicated to their children to recognize the date of their Baptisms. We would like to extend the scheme to anyone who might wish to donate a Bible and dedicate it in memory of a loved one. If anyone would like to dedicate a Bible they are £15 each and we put the name inside the Bible cover. Please contact Angela Jenkins on 01423 358067

Did you know that Tockwith Church has a Facebook page? It is an excellent way to keep in touch with the local community regarding what is happening in church. It’s a great way to keep in touch with busy mums and dads and remind them of events that are coming to church. We pop lots of photos on of various events at church.

VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are not paid, not because they are worthless but because they are priceless. The smooth running of your church is reliant on volunteers in various areas from church cleaning, grass cutting, duties during services and helping out at various fund raising activities, we are always on the lookout for helpers. If you think you can help then please contact one of the church wardens – Angela or Deryck. Happy New Year from Marston Moor Youth Club. Youth Club will resume on Friday 13th January 7-8:30pm

Marston Moor Youth Club is held every Friday night 7-8:30pm, during term time in Tockwith Church and is open to Year 6 to Year 9. HAVEFUN ƒ MAKEFRIENDS ƒ GETINVOLVED µ+HDUDOODERXWLW¶

Jones’ “Snickleways of ” in hand we five stepped off the bus in Piccadilly into a murky moist afternoon and then immediately into the warmth of Primark. This option for walkers is actually included in the book (in the 1991 edition it is C&A), but strictly to gain access to St. Mary’s Square at the heart of the Coppergate development. No time to linger; a quick left turn took us through a tunnel and out onto the Fosse riverbank walkway. We carried on through the Castle car park, then out of town and over busy the inner ring road to go down some steps onto Browney Dyke which took us past the Fosse Basin and flood barrier (the one that failed last Boxing Day). The Blue Bridge (it really is blue!) at the confluence of Fosse and Ouse was where we turned back to follow South Esplanade and King’s Staith to Ouse Bridge. For the sake of satisfying our craving for dark alleys we crossed the road to go down steps into Fish Landing which brought us into Church Lane which must be all of twenty yards long. Thence we moved towards St Crux but turned left down the ginnel most evocative of Victorian penny dreadfuls, La Kyrk Lane. This is a narrow cleft between high buildings lit by a single old fashioned lamp and it joins Pope’s Head Alley, which is almost as tight a squeeze. Now we found ourselves walking down Feasegate and into the bustle of St Sampson’s Square. Here was an outlier of the Advent Street Market where sweet smelling foodstuffs of various origins were purveyed. There was even a stall manned by two friendly Vikings selling usable bows, swords, helmets, shields and battle axes; very Chrismassey. The party was dying of thirst at this point so quickly nipped down Hornpot Lane Nether and Little Stonegate to reach the Old Starre Inn, which has its own little snickleway. For a brief moment the party stopped to gaze up at the backs of mediaeval roofscapes and note surprising glimpses of the Minster through chimney pots; a thousand years of history in evidence all around in bricks, timber and tiles. Refreshed we briefly visited The Guildhall, a stunning stone and oak mediaeval building in a yard behind the post office (and hosting another Christmas craft fayre) before going into Museum Gardens. Here can be seen a relic of Eboracum in the Roman era masonry of the Octagonal Tower. We passed down another alley beside the wonderful King’s Manor before going through Bootham Bar and whipping through The Hole in the Wall into Precentors Court and the Cathedral Close, an island of peace in the bustling city. Ogleforth, once an open sewer, but now an intriguing, architectural backwater, took us to Goodramgate. In the encroaching darkness we were feeling increasingly like punters on a Ghost Tour so we had a quick nip in and out to check off the ancient Bedern Chapel, then decided to hot foot to Thor’s Tipi in Parliament Square for mulled wine and a bit of hygge by the open fire. However, we couldn’t get there without enjoying the Dickensian delights of Coffee Yard, Mad Alice Lane (!) and of course The Shambles. A point to note is that a lot of the snickleways have been spruced up since the 1991 edition and retail detritus in overflowing bins is less of a problem these days. Next walk Monday 9th January at 2:00 pm by Whixley Church All welcome. Please come along. Pete Pozman 01423 359731 07854313112

Warning !!! why New Year’s resoluƟons to lose weight might not be working Do NOT wash your hair with shampoo while in the shower! Many people use shampoo in the shower; however, when doing so, the shampoo runs down their body. Printed clearly on the shampoo label: “For extra body and volume” No wonder people gain weight. Perhaps, dishwashing liquid would be beer. Its label reads: “Dissolves fat that is otherwise difficult to remove.” READINGS and PSALMS JANUARY 2017

Not passing it on

It seems that almost a quarter (23%) of religious parents are not passing on their faith to their children, for fear they will be alienated at school, according to a recent survey. The ComRes research for Theos think tank also found that the greatest concern parents had was about social media, with 34% saying they felt it would have 'more of an impact on my children's beliefs than my input."

Tockwith C.E. Primary School

The staff and children at Tockwith Primary School would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! We will all be returning to school on Wednesday 4th January refreshed from the Christmas break. Year 3 and 4 children will be starting their swimming lessons this month which will run for 10 weeks.

Below are photographs of some of the children taking part in activities held in the run up to Christmas.

Message from the Headteacher,

What an exciting end to the term. Again, this half term has whizzed by but we have managed to finish it with lots of glitter, sparkle and razzmatazz. There has been one very obvious feature of all the Christmas productions and that has been the confidence of our children. It is a pleasure to see them perform and really show pride in what they are doing, no matter what role they have. Thank you also to everyone who attended our Christmas celebrations. It really wouldn’t be the same without you.

Nativity

What an amazing performance! I was bowled over by our children and how well they performed. The singing almost lifted the roof off the church and the voices of the narrators could be heard at the back of the church without the use of microphones! The sheep, camels, chickens, sheep, pages, kings, angels, stars, Mary, Joseph and of course the donkey were amazing as well. It was delightful to see the church packed to the rafters. Thank you to all who shared the Christmas Story with us. Thanks also, to Reverend Shaw, Angela Jenkins and Karen Stobert for welcoming us into the church. The children and the staff did an amazing job, can’t wait for next years now!! The collection for St Dorcas also helped to raise £300 which will be spent on exercise books and school uniform.

Lights, camera, action!

What a strange term it has been for little Tockwith. We seem to have hit the headlines with our new homework grid. What started off with an interview in ‘The Times’ ended up in a TV interview for Newsround via a chat with Adrian Chiles on Radio 5 Live. It has been fantastic to see so many people engage with our new homework policy. The children seem to have loved leading their own learning which will hopefully harnesses a love of learning out of school. The broadcast on Newsround will be a 2 minute special and will feature eight of our children discussing our homework policy. It should be aired in the 2nd week of January – can’t wait! The children and I are thinking of getting an agent to represent us!

Lecture Tour with A Difference On New Year's Eve, Daniel was in no shape to drive, so he sensibly left his van in the car park and walked home. As he was wobbling along, he was stopped by a policeman. 'What are you doing out here at four o'clock in the morning?' asked the police officer. 'I'm on my way to a lecture,' answered Roger. 'And who on earth, in their right mind, is going to give a lecture at this time on New Year's Eve?' enquired the constable sarcastically. 'My wife,' slurred Daniel grimly. The Wisdom of An Angel An angel appears at a meeting of religious leaders and tells their leader that in return for his unselfish and exemplary behaviour, God will reward him with his choice of infinite wealth, wisdom, or beauty. Without hesitating, the leader selects infinite wisdom. 'Done!' says the angel, and disappears in a cloud of smoke and a bolt of lightning. Now, all heads turn toward the leader, who sits surrounded by a faint halo of light. One of the others whispers, 'Say something.' The leader sighs and says, 'I should have taken the money.'

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Two boys were walking home from church after hearing a strong preaching on the devil. One said to the other, "What do you think about all this Satan stuff?" The other boy replied, "Well, you know how Santa Claus turned out. It's probably just your dad"
Just heard that in 2017 there will be a new device that can turn thoughts into speech. I have had that for years, it's called alcohol.
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH
Car park repairs. Repairs to potholes in the car park were completed last month thanks to the Parish Council, making it safer for pedestrians to walk across it. Thanks.
York/Wetherby
We support both York and Wetherby Food Banks. Any surplus food is passed on to other Food Banks in less fortunate locations. There are concerns that rural residents may not realize that they are just as eligible for aid. Where appropriate, please spread the word. All donations are very gratefully received. Thank you. For many parents, the birth of a child is a deeply spiritual event. The Church recognises this, and provides a Service of Thanksgiving for the Birth of a Child for those who would prefer this to a ‘christening’ (now more commonly called ‘Baptism’). It includes prayers for the child and family, and a recognition of all the hopes invested in the child, and is a great way to start a little life.
Please contact your churchwardens for more details, or contact the vicar, Rev.Roy Shaw 01423 359003 or via [email protected]
MARSTON MOOR PROBUS CLUB
On Tuesday 29th November 2016 Mr Gerald Mills introduced Rev. John Billingham to give his talk Art and My Life. John has been retired for one year from being a Baptist Minister and slowly becoming used to a change in pace. He studied Art at Blackburn College and then at Goldsmiths College and started working as a graphic artist. Around 1971 he began attending a Pentecostal Church and gave his life to Christ. His motivation for Art disappeared, he married and became a Minister in the Pentecostal Church. After the cultural shock of having a parish in a Bristol Council estate he moved to near Hitchin as a self-employed graphic designer with his faith shaken but not lost.
He began painting again after a gap of 15years and was then approached by the local Baptists to become their Minister. He obtained a Masters and Doctorate from Oxford and stayed in Hitchin for 11 years before moving to York. John continued to paint during this time and continues now he is retired. He has adopted different styles over the years and had brought with him a considerable collection of paintings, both complete and in his sketch book for Club Members to admire. A number of questions and discussions about Art then ensued before Gerald thanked John on behalf of the Club.
At the January meeting Mr S Smith will talk about ´7KH
The Club normally meets on the morning of the last Tuesday of the month in Long Marston Village Hall, which has a good car park. New members and guests are welcome, contact the Secretary, Mr Bob Ellis on 01423 358 393.
Revd. 5R\¶V5HWLUHPHQW«
As you will probably know, Revd. Roy is retiring in July and sadly we will be having to bid him a fond farewell before we know it.
A meeting with Archdeacon Sarah has already taken place to start planning for LQWHUUHJQXP DQG 5R\¶V VXFFHVVRU  7KH QH[W PHHWLQJ ZLWK WKH 9&&¶V IURP HDFK church and Archdeacon Sarah will be taking place this month, at which we will be asked what we are looking for from our next vicar. If you have any thoughts on this please forward them to either Angela or Deryck before 7th January. We will keep you informed about things as we go along.
Peaceful New Year?
Probably not many of us have LQFOXGHGµSHDFHDQGTXLHW¶LQWRRXUUHVROXWLRQVIRU 2017. Yet the World Health Organisation warns us that 40 per cent of Europeans are exposed to noise levels in excess of 55 decibels throughout each day. That is the level of a loud conversation, and 30 per cent of us have to put up with that same volume at night. Such a level will disturb sleep, raise blood pressure, and even increase the risk of heart disease.
Continual noise can make you ill. Even continually expecting noise or interference can make you ill. Living on the alert keeps you flooded with cortisol, which makes you feel twitchy, unable to focus, hyper-vigilant, and unable to carry out complicated tasks.
Modern life is a cacophony of attempts to distract you with all types of demands on your WLPH6RZK\QRWLQFOXGHVRPHUHJXODUWLPHVRIµSHDFHDQGTXLHW¶LQ\RXU\HDU ahead?
