Network October HIGHLIGHTS NATIONAL SENIOR VOLUNTEER MONTH 2019 Issue 5 | October | 2019 e- Network October HIGHLIGHTS NATIONAL SENIOR VOLUNTEER MONTH 2019 NSVM 2019 continued to promote volunteerism among Singaporeans. We had the participation and support of over 50 Social Service Agencies, corporate partners and government agencies. We are pleased to share that the total turnout for the NSVM 2019 Opening Ceremony was over 2,000 and over 300 volunteers were mobilised including students, corporate and senior volunteers. There was also extensive media coverage by CNA, Berita Mediacorp, Lian He Zao Bao, Shin Min Daily, Business Times, 8world, Chinese Radio News (Capital 95.8). We had also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth to grow senior volunteerism in Singapore as part of the SG Cares national movement. Through this MoU, SG Cares will help develop RSVP Singapore?s capability to grow the number of volunteers aged 50 and above, and help them embark on a meaningful journey through curated volunteer opportunities with community partners, including local SG Cares Volunteer Centres. SG Cares will also expand RSVP Singapore?s network to engage baby boomers upstream at their workplaces, and introduce them to volunteering opportunities. The target is to outreach up to 30,000 baby boomers in the first year. Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth was the Guest-of-Honour and witnessed the signing of the MoU. Everyone was then treated to a scrumptious plant-based lunch cooked by the chef volunteers of GUI before we celebrated the birthday of the ?October babies?. Report on the ... television set and as a tool for establishing closer interaction with the television programs. This publication presents results about people´s real interest in mobile television. The results come from interviewing a large number of persons and from building and trialing a prototype system. A total of 293 people took part in the interviews and the trial. The trial system combined several types of wireless networks in a 4G fashion. It took digital terrestrial television broadcasts from the air and delivered them over the Internet to mobile terminals in hot-spot areas covered by Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN). Two kinds of terminals were used - a pocket-sized PDA and an A5- sized tablet PC. In the field trial the user could watch almost the entire program content of the three leading Finnish TV channels. The user was also able to access all programs transmitted during the previous week from the media server (TV-Anytime feature). This publication is intended for producers and distributors of television content, as well as for people in the handset device industry; it is also useful for students and people who are generally interested in the future of television. The publication starts with a review of television usage patterns and early experiences of digital television and mobile television trials around the world.

  • Media Fusion and Future TV: Examining Multi-Screen TV Convergence in Singapore
1 Media fusion and future TV: examining multi-screen TV convergence in Singapore Trisha T.C. Lin Assistant Professor, Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, [email protected] Abstract This study examines Singapore’s national media blueprint and industry stakeholders’ coping strategies in response to multi-screen TV development. The findings show Singapore muti-screen TV development is still at a nascent stage after launching Media Fushion and FutureTV plans in mid 2009. The policymakers play a key role to follow national media blueprint to unify the inter-industry and cross-country collaboration. TV operators and telcos are found to remediate themselves by harnessing the power of internet and mobile technologies for content innovation and distribution. To tackle the complicated convergent issues in multi-screen TV industry, this study proposes to separately regulate the technology-neutral platforms and diverse audiovisual content. It also recommends a pro-innovative policy with the light-touch licensing scheme and loose content regulation to facilitate the development of the next TV. Keywords: three-screen TV, multi-screen TV, convergence, media fusion, IPTV, mobile TV, cross-platform, TV technologies, TV market, TV policy 1. Introduction The prevalence of Internet and mobile technologies has shaped TV industry dramatically in video consumption, content creation and distribution, and business models. The convergent video technologies allow viewers to watch audiovisual content with personalized experiences cross three screens: TVs, computers, and mobile devices. Since 2009, “three-screen TV” has emerged as a trendy phrase which refers to the integrated solutions for multi-screen video consumption at anywhere, anytime (AT&T, 2010; Krazit, 2009).

  • Musical Practices of South Indian Film in Singapore
ARTICLE Musical practices of South Indian film in Singapore Introduction References to music of Indian popular film in Singapore are located in two entries. The first of them is in a 1954 publication, Arts of Malaya , where Tony Beamish observed Hindustani music…[was]…popular far beyond the confines of the Indian…communities…interesting experiments in Western orchestration can now be heard in both. At the same time, traditional skill is being maintained and the more esoteric forms of communal music continue to be played in Malaya. Of these, Carnatic songs… have an enthusiastic following in the country, and are supported not only by local arts societies but by the occasional visits of distinguished performers from…India and other parts of South-East Asia. 1 Given that Malaya in 1954 included Singapore, the practice of music of Indian popular film in Singapore is notable not so much by its presence but by its brevity of description. Moreover, Beamish’s articulation of the popularity of Hindustani music is curious. Was it Hindustani classical, folk or film music? How did Carnatic songs have an enthusiastic following when Hindustani music was popular beyond the Indian community? What are the interesting experiments in Western orchestration that Beamish observed in Hindustani music? How did this popularity come about if an Indian community comprised no more than 12% of the entire immigrant and indigenous population in Singapore, not to mention a South Indian majority within this small proportion?2 A later entry by Lee Tong Soon on Music in Singapore in the Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians makes the following observations: The majority of Indians in Singapore speak Tamil, while other large groups include the Malayalis, Punjabis, Sindhis, Bengalis, and Gujaratis.
