Call us at 937-652-1157 to advertise Lisa Kennedy your shows Eighteen years ago, with her husband home watching their four children, Lisa Kennedy enrolled in an evening painting class offered through a & events local Community Education program. After finishing her first project, was amazed at how natural it all came to her. Lisa comes from a talented family - both of her Grandmothers were painters. After taking this class she realized this gift had been passed on to her as well. Taking advantage of the quiet times while the kids were napping, painting quickly became her therapy. Eventually, Lisa turned this talent into a career by selling her creations at craft shows. She has painted on all types of surfaces from antique furniture to cookware. In 2000, after years of painting at the kitchen table, her family built her dream studio. That's when she started designing patterns for her whimsical characters to be published in magazines. The patterns and products are also available on her website. Lisa resides in rural Michigan with her husband, Joe, and two of their four children. To view Lisa's art prints, go to www.PennyLanePublishing.com or call Penny Lane Publishing at 800-273-5263 for more information.

It's 2017 and the Country Register Secret Shopper has been out and about ? with the Country Register in hand and recently visited Berlin in Ohio's Amish Country. My first stop was at Country Craft Cupboard right in downtown Berlin Ohio on Rte 39. Be sure to plan on spending some time there with all of the wonderful patterns, great country fabrics, wool and the many crafting accessories that go along with all of the handmade projects you will see throughout this shop. The Country Craft Cupboard also makes samples of so many of their patterns which really helps you get an idea of what your project will look like when you are done. They will get your creativeness going full blast! It was so much fun to search their wall of 100's of patterns including dolls, pinkeeps, makedos, samplers and totes just to name a few the patterns I had to choose from for my next winter projects. Yes projects! I really like to check out patterns in person. The staff at the Country Craft Cupboard is very friendly, helpful and have lots of suggestions. One pattern I really loved was a primitive rabbit that I am going to make for spring. They also have classes and I am thinking I might take the wool hooking class in a few weeks. Their wool patterns for hooking and wool penny items were wonderful to check out and they have a great selection of hand dyed wool to choose from. I also enjoyed the section of the shop that has patterns and samples of clothing that you can make. I liked the patterns for embellishing sweatshirts that make them very unique. I love homespun and their selection is top quality and extensive. I had to have some fabrics to take home for making some primitive country flags for spring. I am sure Country Craft Cupboard is the shop where you will find your next winter project or two or in my case 5! Then just down the street I stopped at Country Gatherings, another shop I found in the Country Register. This shop has so many wonderful country items for your home and garden. Country Gatherings has candles, I bought some yummy wax melts for home, Park Designs window treatments & table linens, upholstered furniture, Irvin's tin lighting and a great selection of country bulbs for all of your country lighting needs. I enjoyed their selection of grubby electric country candles and all of the metal accessories you might need for favorite, a 3 legged round black accent table with tiger maple top. I felt very your home. I found some perfect hooks for my country kitchen. I was drawn to welcomed by the friendly staff. They also have jewelry, purses and lovely clothing the sound of the fountains in their new garden area and saw the largest for you to choose from. selection of fairy garden accessories I have ever seen. If you are starting a fairy Grab your friends for a fun road trip and plan on spending lots of time at Country garden or are a veteran fairy gardener I am sure you will find all that you Gatherings and Country Craft Cupboard in Berlin Ohio. Quilting with Barbara Happy New Year! The new year is the traditional time to resolve to make our lives – and perhaps a small part of our world, better. A few months ago I had the privilege of attending an eye-opening presentation at the Recycling Council of Alberta conference. Three speakers from various parts of the country gave attendees a lot to think about in a short time. Why is an account of recycling facts and initiatives in a quilting column? Well, as I found out, the hottest and newest recycling news concerns textiles, something familiar to most of us, and quilters in particular. We can make small differences in our habits, resulting in benefit to all. First, a little background… We heard, for instance, that in one Ontario city their textile diversion rate (reclamation or recycling of materials to keep them out of a landfill) is over 75%, rapidly rising to their goal of 90%. This measure includes all textiles, including such things as carpets and Northwest Ohio draperies, as well as clothing, shoes and other fabrics. Another jurisdiction is considering banning the disposal of usable textiles in personal garbage, using only clear disposal bags to enforce this ban. (Each family will be allowed one opaque, “privacy” bag per week). A third speaker, a former fashion buyer, is presently completing her PhD. in textile diversion. What an about-face for her! Her research has shown that, on the average, Canadians buy 64 garments per person per year, many of which end up in landfills rather than being repurposed. Unbelievable! (I wondered who is buying my other 55 garments, but I digress). All speakers targeted cheap “fast fashion” offshore imports as a major part of the problem. Because these items are so inexpensive, we feel no compunction about throwing them in the garbage after a few wearings. They end up in the landfill. Unfortunately our imports are increasing in Heavenly Stitches number every year, and so are our landfills. Many of these items could be 2696 Greely Chapel Road, Lima, OH 45804 recycled either mechanically (shredded and repurposed) or chemically, but those methods are not always a satisfactory solution, as they require 419-979-0218 energy, water and land. So what can we quilters do? Suggestions include: Make ourselves aware of uses other than quilting; (e.g.) many of us already use scraps of fabric and batting for beds for animal shelters but there are myriads of additional possibilities; buy less “fast fashion” from offshore; try for quality rather than quantity (says the former fashionista!); realize that all donations can be used by someone for something somewhere. Even single shoes can be used, according to one of the speakers; not everyone has two feet, especially in war-torn countries; actively search for and think about solutions (e.g.) government-sponsored programs; support NGO organizations such as Days for Girls (daysforgirls.org) with materials and time. You will be astounded at their accomplishments, but there is more to be done; participate in fund-raising to pay for transportation of these goods to where they will do the most good. Let's try to make our world in 2017 a better place, each with our own small efforts. To paraphrase Margaret Mead, the ground-breaking anthropologist, “Never doubt what a difference a small group of dedicated people can accomplish.”
