POLICY

This General Order shall establish procedures for the issuance, replacement, maintenance, use, and composition of career and volunteer uniforms.

DEFINITIONS

Approved – Complies with all published specifications of the Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department and/or has been specifically authorized by the County Fire Chief or his/her designee.

Approved Work – A black leather work shoe or . Tennis are not an approved work shoe. It should be noted that the Department does not provide an individual’s foot wear.

Business Attire – Business attire will comply with County personnel procedure 255.

Class A – Ceremonial uniform to be worn on all formal occasions.

Class B Uniform – Administrative uniform to be worn by personnel in staff positions.

Class C Uniform – Station work uniform to be worn by personnel in the field.

Class D Uniform – Physical fitness training uniform to be worn when personnel are engaged in fitness activities.

Class E Uniform – Duty uniform for Specialty Assignments.

PROCEDURES / RESPONSIBILITIES

I. General Provisions

A. The County Fire Chief and/or his/her designee is authorized to change the uniform standards found within this General Order, whenever deemed appropriate. Such cases may include, but are not limited to, events that require Departmental participation, fiscal restrictions or at his/her discretion.

B. All career personnel are required to be in an approved uniform at all times.

C. All operational volunteer personnel are required to be in an approved uniform, as soon as possible, upon entering the station, if they intend to be a part of the staffing. If during this transitional period the member responds on a call for service, they must wear their PPE or Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) High Visibility vest, to make them easily recognizable as a member of the Fire/EMS Department.

D. Command Officers responding from home or a member drafted to respond as part of a crew while doing other business at the station, may wear non-uniform until such time they can get into a proper uniform. Civilian clothing must be in good condition, must not contain any potentially offensive writing or graphics and may not present a safety hazard during station activities or on an emergency scene.

E. The Fire Chief or Volunteer Chief may limit the number of items issued in accordance with the budget allocations.

F. All Departmental uniforms not purchased by the individual are the property of Prince George’s County or the volunteer fire company.

G. All volunteer personnel are required to produce, upon demand by the Fire Chief, Volunteer Chief, or his/her designee, any issued uniform items and/or official equipment.

H. On-duty volunteer personnel must wear or use only issued or approved uniforms, clothing equipment, or insignia, approved by this General Order.

I. Personnel who are on official business with a Chief Officer or representing the Department, and who have been provided advance notice of the detail, must wear an appropriate class uniform.

J. All uniforms issued must meet the specifications approved by this General Order.

K. All personnel shall maintain the uniform(s) so that it presents a neat and clean appearance at all times. shall be tucked in and sleeves shall not be rolled up. Shoes are to be tied and may not be tucked into uniform . Uniform items that are worn, faded, or damaged are not acceptable and shall be replaced through Logistics and Supply or the volunteer fire company, as soon as possible.

L. The Fire Chief or the appropriate Deputy Fire Chief may approve the wearing of civilian clothing as an alternative to the uniform for personnel assigned to staff and special assignments.

II. Classes of Uniforms

A. Class A – Uniform

1. The ceremonial dress uniform shall consist of the appropriate dress , , white long-sleeved uniform for officers and light blue long-sleeved shirt for non-officers, , tie tac, dress trousers, black Garrison style with gold buckle for officers and silver buckle for non-officers, black plain-toed patent leather uniform shoes and solid black . Also includes breast badge, appropriate insignia, appropriate lapel pins depicting the PGFD or the volunteer corporation initials (H.V.F.D., B.H.V.F.D., etc.) and name tags.

B. Class B – Administrative Uniform

1. The administrative uniform shall consist of a short-sleeved shirt (appropriate color as designated in the Class C uniform description), dress trousers, black Garrison style belt, black plain-toed patent leather shoes, and solid black socks.

2. For personnel who have to conduct business with senior government or elected officials, a long-sleeved shirt and tie will be required.

C. Class C – Work Uniform

1. All work uniforms will consist of navy-blue pants, a polo style shirt or approved t-shirt, solid black socks, black Garrison style belt with gold buckle for officers and silver buckle for non-officers, and black leather work shoe.

a) Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, Fire Technicians, Sergeants, Lieutenants, Captains: (1) Blue short-sleeved polo style shirts or navy blue T-shirt with approved markings shall be worn year-round. b) Battalion Chief: (1) Shall wear grey T-shirt or polo shirts. c) Assistant Fire Chiefs and above: (1) Shall wear white polo shirts. d) An approved , job shirt, or optional uniform may be worn, provided it is in accordance with the standards set forth in this General Order. e) An alternative to the required navy blue polo or T-shirt will be a color reflective station’s “corporate” colors.

D. Physical Training Uniform

1. The Physical Training (P.T.) Uniform may be worn as follows:

a) Personnel shall change into the approved P.T. Uniform, just prior to the beginning of the physical training activity. Personnel must promptly change into the work uniform at the end of the physical training activity. The uniform shall consist of a navy blue T-shirt or volunteer corporation T-shirt and navy blue or . The clothing shall have the approved Department or volunteer corporation markings or be plain navy blue. Personnel must not wear any identifiable part of the issued uniform in such a manner that would reflect unfavorably on themselves or the Department.

E. Specialty Duty Uniforms

1. Apparatus Maintenance

a) Non-uniformed personnel, whose primary function is to effect mechanical maintenance repairs, shall wear the rented “Industrial ” type uniforms and coveralls with sewn on name tag. Sewn on name tag shall contain the employee’s first and last name and job title. At the employee’s option and own expense, they may wear a dark blue insulated vest and/or approved with the rented uniform while engaged in activities within the shop or effecting repairs in the field. b) Non-uniformed personnel who do not receive a uniform allowance and whose primary function is within the office shall wear business attire deemed appropriate by the uniformed supervisor or non-uniformed manager for the office. Personnel not in a Department uniform will be required to wear a Prince George’s County Government issued identification badge at all times. c) Non-uniformed personnel who receive a uniform allowance and whose primary function is within the office shall wear an appropriate polo shirt with the Department insignia and name embroidered and long dress pants. d) Sworn personnel shall wear the work uniform.

2. Logistics and Supply

a) Non-uniformed personnel who do not receive a uniform allowance shall wear business attire deemed appropriate by the uniformed supervisor or the non- uniformed manager for the office. Personnel not in a Department uniform will be required to wear a Prince George’s County Government issued identification badge at all times. b) Non-uniformed personnel who receive a uniform allowance shall wear an appropriate polo shirt with the Department insignia and name embroidered, and long dress pants. c) Sworn personnel shall wear the work uniform.

3. Community Outreach/Public Education

a) While participating in the delivery of general public fire safety presentations, the work uniform for non-operational and administrative personnel shall be in an appropriate polo shirt with the Department insignia and name embroidered, and uniform or long dress pants.

4. Fire/EMS Training and Leadership Academy

a) Non-uniformed personnel who do not receive a uniform allowance shall wear business attire deemed appropriate by the uniformed supervisor or non-uniformed manager for the office. Personnel not in a uniform will be required to wear a Prince George’s County Government issued identification badge at all times. b) Non-uniformed personnel who receive a uniform allowance shall wear an appropriate polo shirt with the Department insignia and name embroidered, and long dress pants. c) Sworn personnel shall wear the work uniform.

5. Fire Prevention

a) Inspectors, Code Enforcement and Special Hazards: (1) While conducting official Departmental inspections, non-uniformed personnel who do not receive a uniform allowance shall wear business attire deemed appropriate by the uniformed supervisor or non-uniformed manager for the office. Personnel not in a Department uniform will be required to wear a Prince George’s County Government identification badge at all times. (2) Non-uniformed personnel who receive a uniform allowance shall wear an appropriate polo shirt with the Department insignia and name embroidered, and long dress pants. (3) Sworn personnel shall wear the work uniform.

6. Fire Investigations and Bomb Squad

a) While on duty, investigators shall wear the approved uniform in accordance with Fire Investigation Standard Operating Procedure 11, Work Attire. While operating in an unsafe environment or structure, Department issued personal protective equipment (PPE) shall be worn. b) Bomb squad personnel shall wear the issued utility uniform in accordance with Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Hazardous Device School Standard Operating Procedure. The uniform shall consist of 100 percent shirt with approved insignia and 100 percent cotton BDU pants.

7. Special Events

a) Sworn personnel shall wear the Class C work uniform with a polo shirt. T-shirts will not be permitted.

8. Maternity

a) Personnel may continue to wear the official uniform until it becomes uncomfortable. The shall consist of: (1) Navy blue uniform maternity pants. (2) Appropriate color polo shirt. (3) Black shoes and socks. (4) Uniformed personnel will be permitted to wear their own civilian maternity attire that is appropriate for an office setting (including a maternity with or pants).

9. Under Garments

a) All under garments shall be 100% cotton to provide better protection from thermal injury when combined with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

10. Optional Work Uniforms/Accessories/Requirements

a) Work uniform accessories and associated requirements shall include the official PGFD or volunteer corporation T-shirt, polo shirt, job shirt, and jacket. They shall be solid dark navy blue in color, unless otherwise specified. Members shall have the regulation polo shirt with the appropriate , blue or white, available to wear at all times, to include, but not limited to, details, official lineup, and and/or inspections. The following styles shall be permitted: (1) Accessories (a) T-shirt (100% cotton Short-Sleeve or Long-Sleeve) (i) T-shirts that are faded, tattered, torn, unsightly, or do not meet the requirements described in detail below, will not be permitted. T- shirts shall be worn with the tail tucked in at all times. (b) Military Style Sweater/Job Shirt/Jacket (ii) Navy blue in color. (iii)Sweater shall be pull-over style, with badge and name plate tabs and County or volunteer corporation patch on left sleeve. (iv) Job Shirt with 1/4 zipper, navy blue in color. (v) Optional Jacket must be a cotton canvas (Carhartt style) with a full zippered front, dark navy in color. (a) Sweatshirts/job shirts/ that are faded, tattered, torn, unsightly, or do not meet the requirements described in detail below, will not be permitted. Job shirts/jackets may be worn as

the outer garment, with or without the regulation polo uniform shirt. (c) for Field Wear (i) An approved navy style cap may be worn. The cap must be plain navy blue or may have the Department logo or volunteer corporate lettering or logo on it. (d) Sleepwear (i) Shall consist of an approved T-shirt and navy-blue shorts or sweatpants. The clothing shall have the approved Department or volunteer corporation markings or be plain navy blue. Sleepwear may only be worn in designated sleeping areas. (e) Open Toe (i) Shall only be worn in shower/locker rooms and sleeping areas. It is not permissible to be worn in other areas of the firehouse or apparatus.

III. Uniform Items

A. Blouse – The approved blouse is the standard, dark blue fire service blouse with the Departmental insignia on the left shoulder, decorated as follows:

1. Fire Chief – Double-breasted blouse with gold buttons, five (5) 1/4” gold sleeve spaced 1/4” apart. Five (5) gold crossed bugles are to be worn on the shoulder epaulets. County issued breast badge, gold PGFD lapel pins and name tag. Awards can be worn centered 1/2” above name tag.

2. Volunteer Chief – Double-breasted blouse with gold buttons, five (5) 1/4” gold sleeve bands spaced 1/4” apart. Five (5) gold crossed bugles are to be worn on the shoulder epaulets. Volunteer corporation issued breast badge, volunteer corporation lapel pins depicting the volunteer corporation initials (H.V.F.D., B.H.V.F.D., etc.) and name tag. Awards can be worn centered 1/2” above name tag.

3. Chief Deputy – Double-breasted blouse with gold buttons, four (4) 1/4” gold sleeve bands spaced 1/4” apart. Four (4) gold crossed bugles are to be worn on the shoulder epaulets. County issued breast badge, gold PGFD lapel pins and name tag. Awards can be worn centered 1/2” above name tag.

4. Deputy Fire Chief or Volunteer Deputy Chief – Double-breasted blouse with gold buttons, four (4) 1/4” gold sleeve bands spaced 1/4” apart. Four (4) gold crossed bugles are to be worn on the shoulder epaulets. County or volunteer corporation issued breast badge, appropriate gold PGFD lapel pins or volunteer corporation lapel pins depicting the volunteer corporation initials (H.V.F.D., B.H.V.F.D., etc.) and name tag. Awards can be worn centered 1/2” above name tag.

5. Assistant Fire Chief or Volunteer Assistant Chief – Double-breasted blouse with gold buttons, three (3) 1/4” gold sleeve bands spaced a 1/4” apart. Three (3) gold, crossed bugles are to be worn on the shoulder epaulets. County or volunteer corporation issued breast badge, appropriate gold PGFD lapel pins or volunteer corporation lapel pins depicting the volunteer corporation initials (H.V.F.D., B.H.V.F.D., etc.) and name tag. Awards can be worn centered 1/2” above the name tag.

6. Battalion Chief – Single-breasted blouse, with gold buttons, two (2) gold sleeve bands, one (1) 1/4” on the bottom, one (1) 3/8” on the top, spaced 1/4” apart. County-issued badge, gold PGFD lapel pins, name tag and collar insignia designating rank. Awards can be worn centered 1/2” above the name tag.

7. Captain – Single-breasted blouse with gold buttons, two (2) 1/4” gold sleeve bands spaced 1/4” apart. Volunteer corporation issued breast badge, gold PGFD lapel pins or volunteer corporation lapel pins depicting the volunteer corporation initials (H.V.F.D., B.H.V.F.D., etc.), name tag and collar insignia designating rank. Awards can be worn centered 1/2” inch above the name tag.

8. Lieutenant – Single-breasted blouse with gold buttons, one (1) 1/4” gold sleeve band. County or volunteer corporation issued badge, gold PGFD lapel pins or volunteer corporation lapel pins depicting the volunteer corporation initials (H.V.F.D., B.H.V.F.D., etc.), name tag and collar insignia designating rank. Awards can be worn centered 1/2” above the name tag.

9. Sergeant – Single-breasted blouse with gold buttons, one (1) 1/4” gold sleeve band. Volunteer corporation issued badge, gold volunteer corporation lapel pins depicting the volunteer corporation initials (H.V.F.D., B.H.V.F.D., etc.), name tag and collar insignia designating rank. Awards can be worn centered 1/2” above the name tag.

10. Fire Technicians, Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics – Single-breasted blouse with silver buttons, County or volunteer corporation issued breast badge, silver lapel pins depicting PGFD or the volunteer corporation initials (H.V.F.D., B.H.V.F.D., etc.), name tag and collar insignia designating rank. Awards can be worn centered 1/2” above the name tag. Fire Technicians will have a 1/4” light blue sleeve band.

11. Chaplain – Single-breasted blouse with gold buttons, one (1) 1/2” gold sleeve band, one (1) 1” red sleeve band, and one (1) 1/2” gold sleeve band, spaced 1/4” apart. County or volunteer corporation breast badge, gold PGFD or volunteer corporation lapel pins depicting volunteer corporation initials (H.V.F.D., B.H.V.F.D., etc.), name tag and collar insignia designating rank. Awards can be worn centered 1/2” above the name tag.

12. Station pride patches/logos are not permitted on the Class A blouse.

B. Uniform Shirt

1. Long-Sleeved Button-Up Shirt – Worn as part of the Class A uniform.

a) Officers – White button-up shirt and white undershirt with appropriate collar pins, breast badge, tie, tie tac, and name tag. The County or volunteer corporation patch is 1/2” centered off the seam of the left shoulder. EMS Certification may be worn on the right shoulder. b) Fire Technicians, Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics – Light blue button-up long-sleeved collared shirt and white undershirt with appropriate collar pins, breast badge, tie, tie tac, and name tag. The County or volunteer corporation patch is 1/2” centered off the seam of the left shoulder. EMS Certification may be worn on the right shoulder.

2. Polo Shirts – worn as part of the Class C uniform. When buttoned, leave the top button open. This shirt is authorized for year-round wear.

a) Chief, Chief Deputy, Deputy Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs – A collared polo style shirt and white undershirt with a 3” tall embroidered Department insignia on the left chest and first initial, middle initial, and last name, on the right chest in gold stitching. b) Battalion Chiefs and Volunteer Chiefs – A grey collared polo style shirt and white undershirt with a 3” tall embroidered Department or volunteer corporation insignia on the left chest and first initial, middle initial, and last name on the right chest in gold stitching. c) Officers – A blue collared polo style shirt with a 3” tall embroidered Department or volunteer corporation insignia on the left chest and first initial, middle initial, and last name, on the right chest in gold stitching. d) Fire Technicians, Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedics – A navy blue collared polo style shirt with a 3” tall embroidered Department or volunteer corporation insignia on the left chest and first initial, middle initial, and last name, on the right chest in gold letters.

3. T-shirts – worn as part of the Class C or Class D uniform. A 3” tall Department or volunteer corporation patch shall be placed on the front left breast. The employee/ member’s rank may also be placed above the patch in white block letters, 1/2" in height.

C. Uniform Pants

1. Dress Pants – Navy blue dress pants issued by the Department worn as part of the Class A or B uniform. Worn with both long or short-sleeved button-up shirt and approved belt. 2. Long Pants – Navy or fire navy colored station or tactical pants worn with an approved belt as part of the Class C uniform.

3. Alterations to Uniform Pants – Uniform pants shall be hemmed to a length that the hem touches the top of the shoe. Pants may not be altered to become formfitting or tapered.

D. Belt – Black Garrison style uniform belt with the appropriate buckle

1. Gold Buckle – Officers 2. Silver Buckle – Firefighters, Paramedics, and Technicians 3. Optional Buckle – Gold or Silver belt buckle with the official Department or volunteer insignia in the center

E. Footwear

1. Oxford Style (high gloss) Dress Shoes – Worn with the Class A and B uniform. 2. Boots – Solid black leather boots worn with black socks. Boots will be worn zipped or tied and kept clean and polished. 3. Low-cut Shoes – Solid black leather shoes that do not rise above the ankle. Worn with black socks, will be tied and kept clean and polished. 4. Athletic Shoes () – Worn as part of the Class D uniform for physical training. Must be clean and presentable at all times. Athletic shoes may not be worn for any function other than physical fitness training. 5. At no time will any open-toed shoes, , or crocs be permissible for wear as part of the uniform. 6. The Department does not provide uniform footwear. Footwear is the responsibility of the individual employee/member.

F. Outerwear

1. Sweatshirts – Navy blue in color. Embroidered or screened County or volunteer corporation insignia on the left chest (3” tall) and first initial, middle initial, and last name on the right chest in gold stitching. 2. Job Shirts – 1/4 Zip sweatshirt, navy blue in color. Embroidered or screened County or volunteer corporation insignia on the left chest (3” tall) and first initial, middle initial, and last name, on the right chest in gold stitching. 3. High Visibility Jacket – Department issued jacket with County or volunteer corporation patch on left shoulder. 4. Optional Jacket – Must be a cotton canvas (Carhartt style) with a full zippered front, dark navy in color. 5. Military Style Sweater – Pull-over type, navy blue in color, with badge and name plate tabs and County or volunteer corporation patch on left shoulder.

1. Dress Hat – The approved cap is a stovepipe style fire service dress cap, decorated as follows: a) Fire Chief/Volunteer Chief – White hat, black band, gold strap, appropriate gold badge, and gold visor decoration known as the “Holbrook” flame. b) Chief Deputy/Deputy Fire Chief/Volunteer Deputy Chief – White hat, black band, gold strap, appropriate gold badge, and gold visor decoration known as the “Holbrook” flame. c) Assistant Fire Chief/Volunteer Assistant Chief – White hat, black band, gold strap, appropriate gold badge, and gold visor decoration known as the “scrambled eggs,” three (3) on each side. d) Battalion Chief – White hat, gold strap, appropriate gold badge, and gold visor decoration known as the “scrambled eggs,” two (2) on each side. e) Captain – Navy blue hat, gold strap, and appropriate gold badge. f) Lieutenant – Navy blue hat, gold strap, and appropriate gold badge. g) Sergeant – Navy blue hat, gold strap, and appropriate gold badge. h) Fire Technicians, Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics – Navy blue hat, black strap and appropriate silver badge. i) Chaplain – Navy blue hat, gold strap, and appropriate gold badge.

2. Baseball Style Cap – Caps must be plain navy blue and may have the approved Departmental/volunteer corporation logo or PGFD station number. The baseball style cap shall be worn with the bill of the cap forward. The bill shall have a slight curve. No flat bill or “U” shape.

3. Beanie Style Cap – Caps must be plain navy blue and may have the approved Departmental/volunteer corporation logo or PGFD station number. This cap may be worn when temperatures are below 45 degrees F.

H. Collar/Rank Insignia

1. Fire Chief/Volunteer Chief – Five (5) gold crossed bugles 2. Chief Deputy – Four (4) silver crossed bugles 3. Deputy Fire Chief/Volunteer Deputy Chief – Four (4) gold crossed bugles 4. I. Optional Pins/Insignia

1. Service pins are optional and worn on the left sleeve of the dress blouse, centered and 1/4" above the top officer stripe for officers, and 4” from the edge of the sleeve for firefighters and paramedics. 2. A U.S. flag pin (maximum size 1/2") is optional and worn centered, 1/2" above the name tag. This may be worn on the dress uniform blouse and/or on the dress, administrative, and work shirt. 3. Meritorious service pins are optional and worn over the name tag on Class A uniforms, centered 1/2" above the name tag.

IV. Uniform Use

A. The appropriate class of uniform is authorized only when on duty, at Departmental functions, when attending Fire/EMS classes, or at other times as approved by the County Fire Chief.

B. Personnel will wear the appropriate uniform for their rank, position, and work location.

C. When traveling to and from duty stations, personnel may wear partial uniforms, as long as the articles of clothing are neat, clean, and do not reflect unfavorably on themselves or the Department.

D. The Class C work uniform must be worn while on duty and/or when completing Fire/EMS Department inspections, fire prevention programs, training classes held by other jurisdictions.

E. The uniform shall be kept in a neat and clean manner. The uniform shirt must be kept tucked in and have all but the top button fastened.

F. Personnel must not wear any identifiable part of the issued uniform in such a manner that would reflect unfavorably on themselves, the volunteer corporation or the Department.

G. Each employee is responsible for the laundering or dry cleaning of issued uniforms and clothing. Badges and other plated insignia must not be polished with an abrasive polish or cleaner, as this removes the plating. However, they should be periodically washed in soap and water, utilizing a soft brush if necessary.

H. Personal jewelry items may be worn with the various uniforms, although the wearing of jewelry while on duty is discouraged for safety reasons. On-duty personnel should restrict such jewelry to simple, conservative wedding bands, a watch, medical alert bracelets, , and . Earrings must be small post-type that do not extend beyond the earlobe or dangle from the ear in any . Necklaces must be concealed under the T- shirt or uniform shirt at all times.

V. Issuance

A. Upon appointment to the Department, career personnel shall be issued the following clothing items: 1. Navy blue work trousers (3 pair) 2. Navy blue short-sleeve t-shirts (3 each) 3. Navy blue short-sleeve polo shirts (3 each) 4. Navy blue job shirt (1 each) 5. Navy blue or high visibility winter jacket (1 each) 6. Black Garrison style belt (1 each) 7. Silver belt buckle (1 each) 8. Silver name plates for uniform (2 each) 9. Class A blouse, navy blue (1 each) 10. Class A dress pants, navy blue (1 each) 11. Class A , light blue (1 each) 12. Black tie with tie tack (1 each) 13. Class A dress uniform cap (1 each) 14. Badges and brass for Class A compliance (1 each)

B. Upon promotion, career personnel will be issued the appropriate uniform items and in the same quantities listed above. For acting appointments, these items may be limited.

C. Upon successful appointment to a volunteer corporation, the volunteer member shall be issued the following clothing items by the volunteer corporation: 1. Navy blue work trousers (1 pair) 2. Volunteer corporation short-sleeve t-shirts (2 each) 3. Black Garrison style belt (1 each) 4. Silver belt buckle (1 each)

D. Upon successful completion of Firefighter I or EMT-B, the volunteer member may be issued the clothing items: 1. Navy blue work trousers (2 pair) 2. Volunteer corporation short-sleeve t-shirts (2 each) 3. Volunteer corporation short-sleeve polo shirt (3 each) 4. Count or volunteer corporation Navy blue job shirt (1 each) 5. Navy blue or high visibility winter jacket (1 each) 6. Black Garrison style belt (1each) 7. Silver belt buckle (1 each)

E. Personnel are responsible for purchasing their own shoes, black socks, and T-shirts, as outlined in the definitions section of this General Order.

F. Class A uniform items may be issued by the volunteer corporation as funding permits.

VI. Replacement

A. Replacement items will be issued by the Department or volunteer corporation and will be exchanged on a one-for-one basis. All personnel must report the loss or damage of any uniform items and official equipment to their respective Volunteer Chief. Stolen badges, identification cards, or items valued at $50 or more replacement cost, must be reported to the County Police Department. The supervisor will be responsible to investigate the incident and forward their findings via the chain-of-command to the appropriate Deputy Fire Chief or his/her designee. If the loss or damage is found to be a result of negligence, the item will be replaced at the employee’s expense.

VII. Separation from the Department

A. Personnel who are terminated, retired, or have resigned must return all Department/ volunteer corporation issued uniforms and accessories to Logistics and Supply and/or the volunteer corporation prior to the member’s separation.

B. Career retirees with a minimum of 20 years of service, can keep their Class A uniform and will be issued a “RETIRED” rocker to be sewn under the County patch and receive a retiree badge, based on fiscal availability.

VIII. Care of Uniforms

A. Each issued uniform item has a care label. Personnel are required to care for uniform items according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

B. Destruction of uniform items through improper care could result in personnel being held responsible for replacement.

IX. Evaluation

A. The County Fire Chief may authorize the substitution of specific uniforms and protective clothing for the purpose of evaluation. Those individuals who are in an evaluation group will be required to complete the appropriate documentation, etc. Personnel may request authorization to participate in specific item evaluation through the appropriate chain-of- command.
