The 17-tone Puzzle — And the Neo-medieval Key That Unlocks It by George Secor A Grave Misunderstanding The 17 division of the octave has to be one of the most misunderstood alternative tuning systems available to the microtonal experimenter. In comparison with divisions such as 19, 22, and 31, it has two major advantages: not only are its fifths better in tune, but it is also more manageable, considering its very reasonable number of tones per octave. A third advantage becomes apparent immediately upon hearing diatonic melodies played in it, one note at a time: 17 is wonderful for melody, outshining both the twelve-tone equal temperament (12-ET) and the Pythagorean tuning in this respect. The most serious problem becomes apparent when we discover that diatonic harmony in this system sounds highly dissonant, considerably more so than is the case with either 12-ET or the Pythagorean tuning, on which we were hoping to improve. Without any further thought, most experimenters thus consign the 17-tone system to the discard pile, confident in the knowledge that there are, after all, much better alternatives available. My own thinking about 17 started in exactly this way. In 1976, having been a microtonal experimenter for thirteen years, I went on record, dismissing 17-ET in only a couple of sentences: The 17-tone equal temperament is of questionable harmonic utility. If you try it, I doubt you’ll stay with it for long.1 Since that time I have become aware of some things which have caused me to change my opinion completely. -

Examples: sound barrier or protective headphones to reduce the effects of noise, electromagnetic speakers, echo chamber, microphone, musical instruments, guitar pickup, electronic tuner, sonar detector, anechoic chamber, communication devices… S3P-1-20 Describe and explain in qualitative terms what happens when sound waves interact (interfere) with one another. Include: production of beats S3P-1-21 Experiment to analyze the principle of resonance and identify the conditions required for resonance to occur. They are exemplary of a general class of symbolic notations that musicians use to exchange in- formation about a music piece. This information can range from simple tempo indications such as “allegro” to precise instructions for a performer of the music. Concretely, both keys and chords are timed labels that de- scribe the harmony during certain time intervals, where harmony refers to the way music notes sound together. Chords describe the local harmony, whereas keys offer a more global overview and consequently cover a se- quence of multiple chords. Common to all music notations is that certain characteristics of the mu- sic are described while others are ignored. The adopted level of detail de- pends on the purpose of the intended information exchange. A simple de- scription such as “menuet”, for example, only serves to roughly describe the character of a music piece. Sheet music on the other hand contains precise information about the pitch, discretised information pertaining to timing and limited information about the timbre. -

Fully Automated Guitar Tuner ECE 445 Final Report Benjamin Wang, Brandon Ramos, Cooper Ge Team 71 TA: Vassily Petrov 5/8/20 1 Abstract The problem we chose to address is that tuning guitars is a time consuming and undesirable task for guitar players of all levels. When tuning by ear, it is extremely hard to find the right pitch. The original solution was similar to current commercial tuners; it told you the closest approximate pitch and graphically indicated how sharp or flat you were. Our new solution is an all-in-one tuning solution with minimal user input. Rather than just displaying the input graphically, our device will automatically handle both strumming and tuning to mechanically tune the guitar. Davies, Co-Chair Keyboard instruments are ubiquitous in the history of European music. Despite the centrality of keyboards to everyday music making, their influence over the ways in which musicians have conceptualized music and, consequently, the music that they have created has received little attention. This dissertation explores how keyboard playing fits into revolutionary developments in music around 1600 – a period which roughly coincided with the emergence of the keyboard as the multipurpose instrument that has served musicians ever since. During the sixteenth century, keyboard playing became an increasingly common mode of experiencing polyphonic music, challenging the longstanding status of ensemble singing as the paradigmatic vehicle for the art of counterpoint – and ultimately replacing it in the eighteenth century. The competing paradigms differed radically: whereas ensemble singing comprised a group of musicians using their bodies as instruments, keyboard playing involved a lone musician operating a machine with her hands. -
Problematic Differences Between the Ricercar and Fantasia
I. Introduction The fantasia was an instrumental genre first cultivated in Italy and Spain in the early 1530’s and was quite popular among composers because it imposed no set rules or form, thus allowing experimentation with numerous styles and compositional techniques. Composers used the fantasia as a way to write with complete freedom, not restrained by any preexisting structure; this often resulted in improvisatory treatment of musical material. First developed by Italian lutenists such as Francesco Canova da Milano and Spanish vihuelists such as Luis Milán, the fantasia eventually became known all over Europe. Throughout the history of this genre, the fantasia is often connected to an earlier form called the ricercare. Composers and writers of the sixteenth century either made loose distinctions between these genres, or could not agree on how to explain them, which resulted in some confusion about the terms. II. Purpose In this paper, I will supply a historical background and draw a distinction between the genres of the ricercare and fantasia, with references to influential composers such as Francesco Canova da Milano and Luis Milán. In addition, I will select a fantasia from Luis Milán’s El Maestro (1536) to be transcribed for modern guitar. I will supply a brief historical overview of Milán’s works, as well as an outline of the transcription process, a style analysis of the selected work, and solutions to some performance issues. My adaptation will attempt to make a clearer realization of Milán’s contrapuntal writing in ways that are idiomatic to the guitar. 1 III.
