AGM 28 April 2019 – Adelaide Park Lands Art Prize Report by Maggie Fletcher (Coordinator)

Since 2014 Adelaide Park Lands Art Prize (APAP) has gained considerable momentum and is already recognised as a major art prize. It was initiated by the Adelaide Park Lands Preservation Association (APPA) to raise APPA’s profile at the same time highlighting the beauty and fragility of the Park Lands by using art.

APPA believes that artists are well placed to raise awareness of the many faces of the Park Lands, their vulnerability to the demands of developers and their continuing value to the community.

The Prize is held biennially, 2020 will be the 4th.

APPA is grateful for the continuing support from the Centre by providing the venue free of charge, and for the support of AFC staff. The Festival Centre is a prestigious venue and the Finalist works were viewed by tens of thousands of patrons last year.

APPA again has the backing of APLA for the Art Prize and we look forward to continued support from the for 2020, which is yet to be confirmed.

ARTISTS The prize is open to all artists, of all ages and nationalities. In 2018 there were 200 entries and 72 artworks were selected to be exhibited in the Finalists’ exhibition. Entries last year were generally of a higher quality with artists genuinely considering the Theme rather than using the Prize as simply another landscape or nature art prize.

Artists pay $50 per entry and a few artists submitted more than one entry. A condition of entry is that works must be for sale. In 2018 APPA retained 30% commission on sales. Gross sales were a record for the art prize of $32,000. With a lot of work hours by the APPA art prize subcommittee, we handled all aspects of mounting the finalists’ exhibition, including sales, which was why we were able to retain the entire commission last year. Considerable thanks to Mary Jose who led publicity initiatives and handled sales. I also wish to thank Chris Rann for his generosity in securing valuable publicity for the prize. We received a lot of very positive feedback from artists relating to their experience in entering the prize and they provided heartfelt statements relaying their passion for the Park Lands. The prize provides an excellent opportunity for artists to show their work in a very public venue at the same time being made aware of APPA and the sponsors. We have already started getting the word our to artists that the Prize will be held again in 2020 and applications will open in mid-August 2019.

PRIZES 2018 - $33,000 in prizes were awarded. First prize of $20,000 went to Christopher Meadows for his painting Spheres and Reflections. This artwork was acquired by the Adelaide City Council for their permanent collection. The inaugural APPA Young Artist Prize of $2000 went to Darcy Lewis There were 10 Commendation Prizes of $1000 each and the Royal Adelaide Show sponsored a $1000 People’s Choice Award. • 2018 JUDGES- Lisa Slade (Art Gallery SA), Roy Ananda (artist/ lecturer), Edward James (Exhibitions and cultural coordinator Prospect Council). AGSA’s involvement was a considerable affirmation for the Art Prize last year.

2020- We are aiming for $38,500 in prizes $20,000 First Prize $2,000 APPA Young Artist Prize 10 x Commendation Prizes $1,500 each (an increase of $500 each) $1,500 People’s Choice Prize (also an increase of $500)

In 2020 for the first time, will be seeking sponsors to give $1,500 each for the right to name a commendation prize either in their own, or company’s name or an organisational theme.

SPONSORSHIP 2018- Total sponsorship raised was $27,550 including $10,000 from the City of Adelaide Finalist artists were also hosted by the Lord Mayor at a special reception in the Adelaide Town Hall.

There were 34 sponsors in total. A fantastic outcome thanks particularly to Hamish Ramsay with assistance from Ian Gilfillan. Sponsors also included a large number of the schools whose campuses ad jut the Park Lands. Sponsorship numbers were higher in 2018 through the strategy to seek a larger number of sponsors giving $500 each. Many gave more but the relatively smaller amount encouraged a greater number.

We also this year have an agreement with the Australian Culture Foundation whereby people can make tax deductable donations: a version of crowd funding but operated by a reputable government backed organisation. The link to donating through ACF can be found on our web site, in the APPA e-gazette or search directly for the Adelaide Park Lands Art Prize project on the ACF web site.

In 2018, we held a special preview for sponsors prior to the opening event where sponsors had first option to purchase works. What better way to show your clients that you support the preservation of the Park Lands than to own and display pertinent works of art in your offices.

TO APPA MEMBERS I would like to encourage APPA members to consider donating funds or your time to making the 2020 Art Prize even better. • Encourage any artist you know or whose work you come across, to enter the prize • Consider giving us some of your time to help with publicity and promotion– to tell the world about this wonderful opportunity to enter, view or buy art about The Adelaide Park Lands • Consider donating or inspiring others to donate in any of the different ways we are offering
