Changing Chapultepec: Construction, Consumption, and Cultural Politics in a Mexico City Forest, 1934-1944 A Dissertation SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Andrea Kristine Moerer IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Patrick J. McNamara, Sarah C. Chambers December 2013 © Andrea Kristine Moerer 2013 Acknowledgements As hopefully all are, this dissertation was a labor of love. And much like love, its creation has consisted of episodes of transcendence interspersed among years of hard work and self-doubt. I would not have conceived of or completed this project without the professional advisement of Patrick McNamara and Sarah Chambers. They, in addition to the rest of my committee members: Jeffrey Pilcher, Helga Leitner, and David Chang, were (and are) diligent, supportive, kind, and shockingly brilliant. The faculty at the University of Minnesota's department of history provided a strong foundation not only to this dissertation, but for wider professional goals, and the staff ensured that everything happened on time and with the proper paperwork. Fellow graduate students, particularly Latin Americanists, were wonderful colleagues, passing along Chapultepec citations, commiserating over exams, and providing much-needed moments of levity. As a student, I was fortunate to receive several awards which allowed me to further my thesis, including: GRPP, FLAS, Hannah C. Stocker Fellowship, and an American Society for Environmental History NSF graduate student travel grant. Recently, I've had the privilege of being a visiting instructor at Macalester College and at Hamline University where my colleagues have unquestionably improved not only my teaching but this dissertation.
