A Secular Contract,A Sacred Calling Jacques Maritain and John Dewey on Education:A Reconsideration 247 by Gerald L. Gutek acques Maritain and John Dewey were two of the towering figures in philosophy of education. Maritain led an international revival of JAristotelian and Thomist philosophies known as Integral Humanism. Dewey,a founding figure of Pragmatism,exercised a significant influence on American education. Originating in very different philosophical set- tings, their ideas on education tend to represent polar opposites. An analysis of the divergent insights on education presented by Maritain and Dewey can help educators step back and reflect on their work. These two thinkers’ voices have a relevance that continues to speak to us about the problems of education. Philosophical and Theoretical Orientation To discuss Maritain and Dewey on education,we consider the origin of their ideas in different philosophical and theoretical contexts. Maritain’s concepts of universal truth and purposeful human life origi- nate in the Aristotelian and Thomist traditions, especially their meta- physics. Maritain espouses Aristotle’s metaphysics, which sees objective reality as operating according to universal natural laws. He endorses Aristotle’s epistemology that human beings have the potentiality to acquire knowledge about this reality by forming concepts through a twofold process of sensation and abstraction. Aristotle’s view of knowl- edge and knowing differs from Plato’s theory of reminiscence, in which ideas existing latently in the mind are brought to consciousness. True to his Aristotelian origin, Maritain consistently argues that human beings’ powers of intellect endow them with the potential of rationality. Although Maritain’s philosophy of education rests on Aristotle’s meta- physics, Dewey rejects metaphysics as purely speculative and empirical- ly unverifiable. -

Portier, Ph.D. In its analysis of mystical body of Christ theology in the twentieth century, this dissertation identifies three major streams of mystical body theology operative in the early part of the century: the Roman, the German-Romantic, and the French-Social- Liturgical. Delineating these three streams of mystical body theology sheds light on the diversity of scholarly positions concerning the heritage of mystical body theology, on its mid twentieth-century recession, as well as on Pope Pius XII’s 1943 encyclical, Mystici Corporis Christi, which enshrined “mystical body of Christ” in Catholic magisterial teaching. Further, it links the work of Virgil Michel and Louis-Marie Chauvet, two scholars remote from each other on several fronts, in the long, winding French stream. -

Ford, CSC, S.T.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates and compares the hermeneutics of the French Jesuit theologian, Henri de Lubac (1896-1991), and the German philosopher, Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2001). The writings of both Gadamer and de Lubac continue to generate scholarly investigation, including proposals to apply their insights to contemporary biblical interpretation. Although de Lubac and Gadamer were contemporaries, they never directly engaged each other’s writings; this dissertation brings their thought into dialogue. Chapter One provides a biographical overview of the lives of both scholars by situating the texts that will be examined within the broader context of each work. Since de Lubac approached the subject of biblical interpretation chiefly as an historian of exegesis, the first step in this comparative investigation is a formulation of de Lubac’s hermeneutical principles. Chapter Two, which constitutes the major portion of this dissertation, analyzes de Lubac’s works Catholicisme, Histoire et Esprit, Exégèse médiévale, and La Postérité spirituelle de Joachim de Flore in view of understanding his hermeneutics. -

ABSTRACT SOULS IN THE BALANCE: THE “HERESY AFFAIR” AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON, 1960-67 Brown, Mary Jude University of Dayton, 2003 Director: Dr. Sandra Yocum Mize This dissertation examines the “Heresy Affair” at the University of Dayton, a series of events predominantly in the philosophy department that occurred when tensions between the Thomists and proponents of new philosophies reached crisis stage in fall 1966. The “Affair” culminated in a letter written by an assistant professor at Dayton to the Cincinnati archbishop, Karl J. Alter. In the letter, the professor cited a number of instances where “erroneous teachings” were “endorsed” or “openly advocated” by four faculty members. Concerned about the pastoral impact on the University of Dayton community, the professor asked the archbishop to conduct an investigation. -

Professor James O’Toole, Advisor In the 1960s American Jesuit secondary school administrators struggled to resolve a profound tension within their institutions. The religious order’s traditional educational aim dating back to the 1500s emphasized influence through contact with “important and public persons” in order that the Jesuits might in turn help direct cultures around the world to a more universal good. This historical foundation clashed sharply with what was emerging as the Jesuits’ new emphasis on a preferential option for the poor. This dissertation argues that the greater cultural and religious changes of the 1960s posed a fundamental challenge to Catholic elite education in the United States. The competing visions of the Jesuits produced a crisis of identity, causing some Jesuit high schools either to collapse or reinvent themselves in the debate over whether Jesuit schools were for richer or for poorer Americans. -

Mary Perkins Ryan: Visionary in Modern Catholic Religious Education ANN M. HEEKIN ary Perkins Ryan remains one of the least recognized of the Mtwentieth century figures in the modern renewal of Catholic education in the United States. The reasons why are many but none satisfactory. Ryan was an intellectual without a scholarly credential beyond her bachelor’s degree. She was an educator without an affiliation to an academic institution. A leading voice for professional standards in church religious education without ever serving in either a parish or diocesan role, Ryan worked alongside the giants of twentieth century Catholic educational history–Gerard Sloyan, Johannes Hofinger, Gabriel Moran, Berard Marthaler, Maria Harris, Gloria Durka, and Thomas Groome. Despite her leadership in the American liturgical movement and her visionary stance on adult religious education, Ryan still remains in the margins of Catholic educational history. The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate how Ryan’s intellectual corpus that includes twenty-four authored works and forty years of editorial direction at The Living Light and Professional Approaches for Christian Educators (PACE) justifies her place alongside the more established figures of her time. It is also intended to reclaim a leadership role for Ryan as a visionary in the modern renewal of Catholic education and in so doing to move her contributions from the margins to the main text of that history. Nearly three decades before the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) convened, Ryan and other leaders of the American liturgical movement 246 Ann M. Heekin envisioned a pastoral orientation to the religious education of the laity. -

The Life of Justine Ward, her Work in Comparison to Orff and Kodaly, and Applications for the Public School Classroom. Published Doctor of Arts dissertation, University of Northern Colorado, 2006. Justine Ward was born August 7, 1879, into a life of great privilege, yet chose to devote her life to teaching her method, which was designed to teach the fundamentals of music instruction in order to equip students to sing chant. Although Ward’s method was used throughout the world during the first half of the twentieth century, it fell into disuse following Vatican II in 1962. There is no chronological history in English tracing the Ward Method from its inception to decline. This work provides such a history, with explanations of important people and topics that may be unfamiliar to the reader. -
