    MEDIA RELEASE - AFL (NSW/ACT) Wednesday, April 2 Henson Park to host five Sydney AFL matches this Saturday With the celebrations for 150 years of Australian Football underway, Sydney AFL will be creating some history of its own this weekend, with an entire round of senior football scheduled over one day at Henson Park for the season opener. This Saturday, footy fans will be treated to over 12 hours of Australian Football action, with all five Round One matches of the Sydney AFL taking place at the newly renovated facility. Henson Park, home of the Newtown Jets, has recently undergone a $250,000 upgrade, and this will be the first opportunity for Sydney AFL to take centre stage at the refurbished ground. Garry Burkinshaw, Senior Football Operations Coordinator for AFL (NSW/ACT) said that this was an exciting milestone for the Sydney AFL competition and signaled the leagues continued development as a premier sporting competition. “This is an important year for Australian Football across all levels of competition and Sydney AFL is no exception. As a competition the standard and support is growing rapidly and being able to provide fans with an entire day and night of Australian Football is a fantastic opportunity. “It is also the perfect platform to showcase some of the emerging talent coming through. Fans will be able to see the next generation of AFL stars in action with many of the NSW Rams players taking part in matches, along with some of the AFL Scholarship holders,” said Burkinshaw. While the TAC Cup season started last weekend for the best U18 male talent across Victoria, last Monday saw the conclusion of a very successful Youth Girls Academy Challenge for the most promising U18 females across the state. Congratulations to the Dandenong Stingrays, who defeated the Sandringham Dragons in the finale to the month-long tournament. It is pleasing to see TAC support not only the next crop of elite U18 boys but also what will be the next crop of future female AFL footballers via the U18 Youth Girl Academies across eight regions.     AFL Draft Combine Tests Information Sheet At the end of each year the AFL holds an event called the 'Draft Combine' where hopeful AFL players are put through a series of testing. These tests include medical screening, physical performance tests such as vertical jump test, 20m sprint test and a range psychological performance tests. Vertical Jump Test This test is used to evalute an athletes lower body power. Vertical jumping and lower body power is important in AFL when jumping for marks, jumping to spoil and particularly important in ruck contests. 20m Sprint Test The 20m sprint is a test of a players acceleration and speed. Both are very important in a game of AFL for breaking away from an opponent, getting open on a lead and bursting away from stoppages. AFL Agility Test This is a specific slalom-type agility test developed for AFL, which involves running in, out and around obstacles over roughly 40 meters in total. The ability to quickly change direction is very important for AFL to be able to get clear of an opponent, or move through congestion. Yo-Yo Test The Yo-Yo Test is used to test a players aerobic endurance. This is arguably the most important phyical ascpet of AFL as players will run up to 16-18km a game (dependant upon position). In AFL you need to be aerobically fit to perform well towards to end of quarters and at the end of a match, which can be the most critical part of a game.
