The Ecological Virtues of Bill Mason Paul Heintzman University of Ottawa Conference Travel Funded by the Reid Trust Introduction ■ Although much has been written in the last few decades about ecological virtue ethics, very little has been written on this topic from a Christian perspective (Bouma-Prediger, 2016; Blanchard & O’Brien, 2014; Melin, 2013). ■ Virtue Ethics: What type of person should I be? ■ Cultivation of certain virtues are necessary to address ecological problems (Bouma-Prediger, 2016) ■ Sometimes we see practices embodied in a person who displays what a life of virtue concretely looks like (Bouma-Prediger, 2016) ■ E.g., Mother Teresa ■ “Such people are ethical exemplars or models of virtue who inspire us to live such a life ourselves.” (Bouma-Prediger, 2016, p. 24) ■ Doesn’t give an example ■ This paper explores whether Bill Mason is an Christian exemplar of ecological virtues Bill Mason: Canoeist, Filmmaker, Artist 1929-1988 Mason Films (most National Film Board of Canada films) ■ Wilderness Treasure ■ Paddle to the Sea ■ Rise and Fall of the Great Lakes ■ Blake ■ Death of a Legend ■ Wolf Pack ■ In Search of the Bowhead Whale ■ Cry of the Wild ■ Face of the Earth ■ Path of the Paddle Series (4 films) ■ Song of the Paddle ■ Coming Back Alive ■ Pukaskwa National Park ■ Where the Buoys Are ■ The Land That Devours Ships ■ Waterwalker Ongoing Influence ■ Postage Stamp ■ 2009: Inducted posthumously into the International Whitewater Hall of Fame Writings on Mason: ■ Biography ■ Raffan (1995). Saga of the First Orienteer 6 COF Drops 7 Before looking forward to the 1999 season we must reflect 1998 World Cup - Final 8 - 9 on some special events of 1998. For some, a wonderful World Orienteering Marathon - 1999 10 week of orienteering in British Columbia for the Sage Stomp Orienteering in 2001 World Games Orienteers Assist Firefighters 12 `98 events, in particular the COC events in lovely settings National Team News 13 at Logan Lake. • Off-Roaders in Action
CALIFORNIA OFFROAD VEHICLE ASSOCIATION Volume 21 Issue 4 November 2008 CORVA OFFROADERS CALIFORNIA OFF-ROAD VEHICLE ASSOCIATION www.corva.org IN ACTION A United Front Currently the motorized recreation community is facing a number of major land use issues throughout the state of California which threaten our legitimate access to public lands. Nowhere is this threat better illustrated than the recent proposal from the Department of Defense (DOD) to transfer all or part of the 189,000 acre Johnson Valley OHV Area from the BLM (with open access) to the military (with no public access). Based on this recent proposal, representatives from state, local and national OHV organizations have met several times to formulate a comprehensive response. While we certainly support proper training of our troops, especially during a time of war, the groups agreed to champion alternatives or options that will allow the military to fulfill its need without losing a sin gle acre of our beloved recreation opportunities. In order to be fully prepared to engage in the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process that the DOD is required to follow, we will continue to work together to form cohesive strategies and alternatives. We will be submitting comments that will require the DOD to justify the need for this land, especially given the impacts to the OHV recreation, the local com munity, and the surrounding environment. We will also seek the advice of our attorneys and lobbyists. Most important, our goal is to use the NEPA process to stop the Marines from moving into Johnson Valley.

Butte County Federal/State Land Use Coordinating Committee March 27, 2018 from 1:30 PM – 2:00 PM Auditor-Treasurer Conference Room 25 County Center Drive, Oroville CA Agenda 1) Self-Introductions (committee members and public) 2) Lassen National Park Bumpass Hell Re-design comments 3) CA OHV Grant Applications—Review and develop comment recommendations 4) Public comment Comments open on Lassen Park’s Bumpass Hell access alternatives Chico Enterprise-Record (http://www.chicoer.com) Comments open on Lassen Park’s Bumpass Hell access alternatives Popular area to be closed this year for work on trail By Steve Schoonover, Chico Enterprise-Record Thursday, March 8, 2018 Mineral >> Three alternatives have been developed to revamp access to Bumpass Hell in Lassen Volcanic National Park, and a 30-day comment period has opened on the environmental assessment of the three options. The preferred option will maintain the current boardwalk configuration in the basin, and make improvements to the trail from the main park road. The geothermal basin and the trail to it are closed this year, for work on the trail. According park spokeswoman Karen Haner, the necessary approvals for the work are expected in May, but due to snow at the park work won’t start then. The first step will be replacing the boardwalks with new structures designed to handle winter snow loads and the acidic conditions in the basin. They would be modular and could be moved as necessitated by the changes of the thermal features. The preferred alternative calls for enlarging the viewing platforms in the basin at both the Big Boiler and Pyrite Pool.

This event holds a special place in the hearts of many runners, supportive family members, spectators, Seward community members, fellow Alaskans, and visitors from around the world. Even before Seward was founded in 1903, locals would run up Lowell Mountain to spot incoming steamships. When a ship was spotted, the climbers would race down the mountain to be the first to alert the community. This tradition prompted a bet that a runner could make it up and down the mountain in under an hour. The first attempt took Al Taylor one hour and 20 minutes. Word of the one-hour challenge spread across Alaska. The first organized race was held in 1915. James Walters won with a time of one hour and two minutes. It would be several years before “Seward’s mountain marathon” turned Lowell Mountain into Marathon Mountain. Today, the community of Seward continues to warmly welcome athletes and visitors to our town to celebrate Independence Day. Through the years, this event has grown to mean many things to many people, but the heart of the event remains the same.

  • PNSW Annual Report 2011 with Financials
' Annual Report 2011 * !"(! " - $% *. ! "!$% ++ !# "&$% +, ! PaddleNSW 2011 Annual Report 1 ( OVERVIEW PaddleNSW has now completed its third year of operation as an association. It has been an amazing journey of growth, both in membership numbers and services to members. While most of our activities have been conducted behind the scenes, some have had a more direct effect on members. For the first time, we were able to source a provider of very cost effective boat insurance, and coupled this with our membership renewals process to give our members some added value to their membership. We actively engaged the IT world in creating a new website to be unveiled at the 2011 AGM. We started the year on a sound financial footing, due to our earlier restrained expenditure and the contribution of many volunteer hours by the management committee. Primary expenditure this year involved the payment of AC affiliation fees and the employment of a paid staff, initially for 16 hrs / week. Additional administration assistance was sourced for several projects, especially those of education development and membership processing, taking our combined office hours up to 38 hrs / week. See ‘personnel’. Commencing this year, PaddleNSW has actively developed the ‘Paddle Australia’ event sanctioning process. It provides organisations new to paddling an opportunity to conduct events with the guarantee of event quality through guidance by the State Association and Australian Canoeing. Several very successful events have been held in diverse locations throughout the state, and the process is opening up new opportunities for PaddleNSW to extend its sphere of influence. Some Paddlesports Technical Committees, in particular Marathon and Open Water, have excelled at promoting and developing their area of paddlesports.
