A MUST READ!!By RonniemoeThis is a review from Brenda Tuck- Mumford. I sat down and read this book straight through in one evening because I had been waiting for it for a long time. First let me say that Jim Peterik is a class act all the way. This book is a fascinating look into the story of his life- his childhood, his discovery of his love for music, his meeting with his lovely wife Karen, his discovery that he was able to write songs. Not just good songs but GREAT songs. Jim does not just write a song, he crafts it and it becomes a thing of beauty. One of my all time favorite songs is 'Vehicle' and until I became a fan of Survivor I never knew this was Jim's band or Jim singing! I became a fan of Survivor when Jimi Jamison joined as lead singer and upon discovering Jim's wondrous way with words went back and bought all the prior Survivor albums and though the songwriting was just as terrific, it was the combination of the golden voice of Jimi coupled with Jim's songs that really won me over. (The book also clarified alot of issues with the band that I had always known existed). Sadly, we lost that golden voice on 9-1-14 very suddenly and unexpectedly. Jim is involved with all kinds of projects and it is a joy to see him so happy, relaxed and finally at peace. This is a great read in and of itself but an especially important read if you are or ever were a Survivor fan.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Still delievering in full forceBy Christopher S. ChannerJim Peterik is the proof that not every rock star lets success ruin them. If you want to know why Jim is the extra-ordinary exception, read this book.I have seen Jim through more than one lens. When I was in my 20's, I built a large night-club. Jim Peterik (and Bill Chase) played for us along with many young rising rock stars. But the two rockers that impressed me most were Jim Peterik and Tommy Shaw (who was doing his MS Funk thing at the time). Why? Because they were both humble co-operative spirits. They both shunned the cheap thrills in favor of the real thing: great rock performances. And they are both still delivering in full force.I have run into Jim a few times over the last 40 years. Nothing has changed. He is probably the nicest human being in all of rock and roll. He asks for nothing except to play and sing his heart out, and to love his audience "right back". All those years, dodging every kind of ego-maniac imaginable, and Jim Peterik is still a man's man, a musician's musician, and a song writer's song writer. He is simply the best.If you want to know why, read 300+ pages of this character-revealing book. He is the man who just seemed to know that it is not about ego-satisfaction. Rather, it is all about the music. Jim reveals nearly every aspect of his life of music and song-writing. And he reveals all the personal aspects as well, including his love for family and his deep friendships with others. If you love music and want a true insider's life-experiences revealed in detail, read his book... and enjoy! It is truly a breath of fresh air. I bought four and will buy more.Love ya, Jimbo.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Jim Peterik: A Rock Legend!By EcHo10Well, I'm way late to the party, but I just finished reading the book and really enjoyed it! Jim has certainly lived a full life! Duh!!! LOL I've had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times when he would visit a music store I used to work at in Villa Park. I always found him to be a pleasant, happy person and very down-to-earth. And I gotta say, that was refreshing - especially coming from someone who has done so much in life.About the book...Jim has a gift for telling stories and his cheerful infectiousness shines through, but I'll tell ya....he pulls no punches, especially when it comes to Frankie Sullivan and Survivor. If you're a Survivor fan reading this, don't expect a rosy picture all of the time because it contains the harsh truth on the Rock-N-Roll life; warts and all, but that is what makes the book all the more compelling. If I learned one thing in this book, it was that within the complexities of all of the characters lies the lessons and the beauty; the yen and the yang. And believe me, there are lots of them peppered throughout the book. According to an interview I read recently, not all of the stores made the book due to space constraints, along with others that were omitted for legal reasons. Whatever the case, it's a great read and one that I highly recommend! For the musicians...The Survivor years are pretty-well detailed here, and each album gets more than a fair mention; the recording processes that went into them, including personnel, producers, studios, songs written, and the endless band drama/record label politics involved etc. Having said that, don't expect a play-by-play of every nuance per se, but a fair amount of details that went into them, along with the life that got lived while it was happening. I think the book did an excellent job of intertwining the personal and professional simultaneously. I mean, what else can you expect from a musician? A.D.D. is part and parcel to being one no? Oh look!!! A squirrel!!! LOLRockin' book Jim! Well done! “Hey, yo, Jim . This is Sylvester Stallone. Give me a call . .”It was these words that would set Jim Peterik on the road to rock ’n’ roll immortality. After he and his Survivor bandmates recorded “Eye of the Tiger” for the Rocky III soundtrack, the song would go on to earn a Grammy, an Oscar nomination, reach triple platinum status—and become one of the most recognizable tunes in music history. But there’s much more to the story of Survivor and its founding member, Jim Peterik, than meets the eye. As one of the most prolific songwriters of his generation, Peterik has cowritten songs with some of the most famous bands and artists of our time, including 38 Special (“Caught Up in You,” “Hold on Loosely”), Sammy Hagar (“Heavy Metal”), The Beach Boys, The Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, and many more. Now, for the first time, Peterik is sharing his stories.Filled with tales from Peterik’s life in rock ’n’ roll, Through the Eye of the Tiger documents his early days of success with The Ides of March (“Vehicle”), through the often torturous power struggles within Survivor, and the giddy highs that accompany a trail of worldwide hits. From going to a party in Led Zeppelin’s hotel room (and turning right back out the door) to escorting a disoriented Janis Joplin back to her hotel room after opening her show in Calgary, Peterik’s accounts will surprise and delight.Through the Eye of the Tiger is more than just a memoir of a songwriting legend; it’s a classic rock ’n’ roll story told through the eyes of someone who has lived through it all—and through the Eye of the Tiger. “The song Jim and Frankie wrote, ‘Eye Of The Tiger,’ was so amazing that when I first heard it I had to make sure I was not dreaming—a heart-pounding timeless rock masterpiece! Thank you, you made Rocky even more heroic."—Sylvester Stallone“The first time I met [Jim], we wrote a song together while sharing a spaghetti dinner at my favorite Italian Restaurant. I knew we had a hit..sure enough, that song ‘That’s Why God Make The Radio’ became the title of the Beach Boys’ highest debuting record (#3) in over 40 years.” —Brian Wilson"We come from different worlds, but we speak the international language...M-U-S-I-C. I am honored to share a stage with him and call him friend. He’s my Vehicle.”—Buddy Guy“Jim Peterik is such an extraordinary songwriter, musician and human being. I believe he was put here on this earth to inspire us all with his words and melodies and he’s done just that. Jim, you wrote a great book, great storytelling- such an adventure to read.
