Why teach at Bay House School?

This is what our colleagues say:

The young people Every response from our staff survey said that teaching at Bay House is special because of the young people in our community

'it’s definitely the Bay House kids, there’s something about them, they’re genuine and warm (and drive us mad sometimes) but it is definitely our kids’

We make a difference together

‘there is nothing better than knowing we make a difference and we really do here’

2014 saw us achieve our highest ever set of GCSE examination results. 68% of our pupils achieved 5 A* - C grades, including English and Maths (84% A*-C in English Language, 83% in English Literature, 76% in Maths, 62% of pupils reached A* - C in 2 Sciences). As a School we are not complacent and place great emphasis on ensuring that a greater number of pupils secure C grade or better passes in English and Maths. Likewise, we feel justified in our belief in keeping a broad and balanced curriculum entitlement for all, with a degree of diversification to support those learners less well suited to GCSE examination. Hence the inclusion of Vocational and BTEC courses into our Year 10 and 11 provision.

We are particularly proud that pupils entitled to the pupil premium perform better in English and maths than all pupils so nationally. We are committed to closing and not ‘just’ narrowing gaps.

Our Sixth Form

Bay House Sixth Form, established in 1996, has grown rapidly in recent years due to the outstanding examination results. In 2014, we are the highest performing post 16 provider in Hampshire, with 86% of students achieving A*- C grades at A level (62% A*-B). This is 10% above the national average. The Sixth Form has around 460 students, almost half of whom join Bay House from other schools. Approximately 90% typically secure places at that first choice university and around 40% at prestigious Russell Group institutions. We remain in The Times' Top Comprehensives for A Level, feature in The Times' Top Schools (including independent and selective schools) and have been identified as in the top 2% of providers nationally for the value-added progress made by our sixth form students. The recent Ofsted inspection team noted that 'The Sixth Form is judged to be outstanding in every respect'. We share a sense of purpose.

Our recent Ofsted inspection in 2014 noted that staff share ‘significant moral purpose’ and that there is a ‘secure, shared vision.’

‘We’re all heading on the same journey and in the same direction.’

Bay House School and Sixth Form has a fundamental belief in offering high quality learning experiences not only for its pupils and students but also for teachers and its entire staff. Teaching at Bay House brings with it the benefits of being a large school, where we can utilise the broad range of skills and expertise within our own body of staff so we can all develop as teachers and leaders. Our thorough professional learning ‘offer’ gives each teacher a wide choice of options, complimented by department and pastoral professional learning. We also work across networks of schools so every teacher’s professional learning and development can be personalised.

We have a thriving Bay House staff community of just under 300 staff with a very wide range of backgrounds, experiences and skill sets.

Did you know we have staff with backgrounds in catering, ground maintenance, personnel and HR, work with adults and young people, cleaning or administration. And many staff whose skills with people, empathy, organisation and resilience make them such an asset to our community.

Our team of support staff all contribute to the success of our young people and our successes as a school community and as individuals within the school community. Our staff share a passion for making a difference to young people, enjoy being with and around people, committed to our own learning and the learning of others and sharing in our sense of community.

We share a sense of purpose

All staff, the youngsters and their parents share a sense of where we are heading – to ensure everyone achieves to their very best. This means we believe that offering high quality learning experiences is not only for its pupils and students but also for all our staff. All staff have the opportunity to grow and develop, and engage in a range of learning opportunities to suit what you enjoy and need. We have experienced buddies and mentors to provide support and challenge, opportunity to work alongside colleagues in different roles and there are many opportunities to participate fully in wider school learning and enrichment activities.

Sense of community and each other

Why do so many of our staff choose to stay at Bay House for many years? Because it is special! And the sense of community adds to that specialness.

‘sense of camaraderie and being a team’

‘strong ethos of being together and working together’

‘being a real team that includes everyone in the community – all staff, the kids, the parents community and of course being in these buildings!’

‘great people to work with, there’s a special Bay House spirit in the people here.’

Throughout the academic year there are formal and informal opportunities to be together as a school community – a teaching and support staff, with the youngsters, and with their families. Whether this is the wide range of performing arts and sporting activities, staff X factor or the end of term prom for year 11 involving all our neighbours and supporters. See our school calendar for the full range of activities (www.bayhouse.hants.sch.uk)

Did you also know we have staff teams (competitive and non) for football and netball? A staff band, staff keep fit and gym groups, Bay House ‘bathers’ (open water swimming group) and many, many more …

Bay House School has a rich history, which can be traced back to 1838. Alexanda Baring, who later became Lord Ashburton, built the house that now forms part of the scool as his summer residence. The arthitech of the house also designed the arch on Constitutional Hill.

In 1870 a naval college was established at Bay House which became known as Ashburton House. Prince Alfred Ernest, Duke of Edinburgh, who was Queen Victoria’s second son, attended the . He stayed at Alverbank House while he was studying there.

In 1892, Col. Francis Sloane-Stanley, a close friend of the Prince of Wales – who was later to become King Edward VII – took over the house.

In 1943 the house was sold to Borough Council and the 17 acres of parkland were donated to the people of the borough. This marked an important period in the house’s history as it was a base for the Royal Engineers during the war.

Following the war the house became Gosport County Grammar School. The school was renamed Bay House School in 1972. It has developed significantly since this time, including introducing a Sixth Form to the Gosport area.

We are incredibly proud of the school’s history and the progress that it has made over recent years.
