From the dugout...

It’s just my opinion, although I feel most reading this will probably agree with me, but losing our FA Cup tie with Barnet the Saturday before last in the manner in which we did, with two or three huge talking points, and in my eyes, errors from officials was a bitter pill to swallow, not least after having gone through the build-up the entire week, seeing the club coming together to put on such an event and make it an overwhelming success, seeing 600 Leiston supporters cheers us on and stick to the guidelines we put in place, and finally, watching the team go out and perform the way they did ina professional and, at times, dynamic way. But I can’t thank the lads enough for their FA Chris Wigger Cup endeavours. Our luck didn’t improve last Tuesday at St Ives, when after twice hitting the woodwork, we went down to a scrappy injury-time winner; more scant reward for the efforts put in by players and staff on a miserable Tuesday evening. After the Barnet game, when I looked ahead to last Saturday’s FA Trophy match, I thought it posed a really interesting question. What, if any, difference is there between these two leagues competing at the same level? Bottom vs top would make an interesting dynamic that Darren and I were very much looking forward to, and I knew the lads would be eager to try and prove a point. And so it proved. We are certainly value for money at the moment, but I don’t advise watching if you have a heart condition. On a serious note, I think Saturday’s performance was a massive positive, for quite a few reasons. Obviously, because of the result, but also for the fact that we rotated and used the entire squad, and some of the individual performances from players who have not started the last few games were excellent. Fitness took its toll, which is to be expected, and that is one of the reasons I feel Worthing got back into the game. Finlay Barnes winning man of the match was another huge plus. We all know what he is capable of, and he is now starting to adapt to the level. It also showed that there is a slight difference perhaps in the standard of our league and theirs. That is a point that I’m sure some may argue with, but for me, I felt that we more than matched them. Some of our football was fantastic at times. Moving back to league action tonight and possibly our last game for a while. I feel confident that the ladsare chomping at the bit to get back out there. We know it will be another tough game, but Saturday’s performance will give us huge confidence. This is very much a growing team and it continues to evolve. We will get it right, of that I’m very confident. Keep well, everyone, and please continue to follow the Covid-19 regulations around the ground. Chris.

A warm welcome to today’s match officials: Today’s Referee: Thomas Harvey Referee’s Assistants: Jordan Sandwell, Tristen Watson

1980 Home Park lost to redevelopment. A nomadic existence followed, playing at Colne Valley, Rolls Royce and Buncefield Lane and Leavesden Hospital, until March 1997, when the club moved into their present ground at Gaywood Park. The reformation of Kings Langley Youth Football Club in 1989 after a 19 year absence played its part, as both junior and senior supporters combined to launch a project of obtaining the land, laying two pitches and building a pavilion. Sponsors included the National Lottery, Herts. F A, Dacorum Borough Council, Kings Langley

Parish Council and the club’s great benefactor, Graham Gaywood, who tragically passed away so soon after the dream was realised. The ground is named Gaywood Park as a tribute to someone who made it all possible.

Achieved the double by winning the Challenge Trophy (League Cup). 2015-16 Southern League Division 1 Central champions at first attempt, thus winning promotion for the third successive season.

2016-17. A turbulent season saw the departure of Paul Hughes and Ritchie Hanlon at the end of October and the return of Paul Hobbs as manager. The season was a battle against relegation from the Southern League Premier in the debut season and back to back wins in the last two games ensured safety. 2017-18. The reorganisation of Steps 3 and 4 for 2018-19 meant only one team was relegated and while failing to improve on last season’s record, Kings were never in danger. Steve Conroy was promoted from coach to manager in December, succeeding Paul Hobbs. 2018-19. Achieved highest placed position in the history of the Club, finishing sixth and missing the play offs by one point. Steve Conroy departed at the end of the season due to failure to reach a financial agreement. 2019-20. Dean Barker appointed manager, but was succeeded in September by Chris Cummins. Club moved laterally to Southern League Central. Ten match unbeaten run at start of 2020 took Kings to edge of play offs before season was concluded in March due to global pandemic. The Youth section continues to flourish and now boasts 22 boys’ youth teams and three girls’ youth teams, with age groups ranging from Under-6 to Under-18. The club has now been granted FA Charter status and looks to improve its facilities further as well as make progress up the football pyramid.

A journalist is only as good as their contacts book, they say, so we at The Non-League Paper reckon we’re onto a pretty good thing. Printing a weekly paper throughout lockdown, without a ball being kicked, wasn’t easy. In fact, it was only made possible by the ‘fraternity’ – the chairmen and women, managers, players and supporters of football clubs across the land. We’re pretty lucky at The NLP. We have a loyal following and an enviable understanding with the people we represent. Yes, of course, we realise that having a relationship with the Press is in their interests, but it goes beyond that. A great number of players and managers can be counted as friends and we are very proud of that.

A conversation I had with a Step 3 manager the other day reminded me of a very special relationship I struck up with a manager as a young reporter, working on my local paper in Aldershot. George Borg arrived at the Recreation Ground with a high profile and a no-nonsense nature. If he wanted, he could have spat out a young whippersnapper like me. Instead, we became very close, and although he doesn’t know it, it was he who lit the flame for my love affair with the Non-League game.

On one occasion, I remember my back-page lead story falling through, leaving me high and dry an hour before deadline. In desperation, I gave George a call and explained my dilemma, asking him if he could confirm any transfer speculation to help fill the void. What he gave me was a stronger exclusive than I had originally, which became a popular talking point on the terraces.

As in most walks of life, a working relationship requires an ‘I’ll-scratch-your-back-if-you-scratch-mine’ thesis. George was a big advocate of this. I remember waiting outside the dressing room door for the Shots boss among a posse of TV crews and national journalists following a FA Cup tie with Brighton & Hove Albion in November 2000. Accepting I would probably only get a fraction of his time, I did contemplate easing his burden by slipping off and calling him later. Just as I did though, one of the players came to the door and asked specifically for me and my counterpart from the Farnham Herald to come through and speak to George in the managers’ room at the back. The face of the national guys was a picture as the two of us hustled our way through the crowd. But when we got to the manager’s changing area, there he was sat on the bench with only a small hand towel to protect his modesty! It was probably the strangest interview I had ever carried out!

To this day, I always keep an eye out on how George’s Braintree Town side fare come 5pm on a Saturday. It’s a relationship which taught me so much and one I will always treasure.

Leiston FC 50/50 Draw

Despite the atrocious weather for Saturday’s FA Trophy match against Worthing, we had an attendance of 134 brave and hardy supporters. Although a relatively low gate, we still sold 128 tickets. For those who like statistics, sales of 128 represents a marvellous average of 95% of the attendance! The lucky winner of £64 was Mr Dave Williams with ticket No.1147. Our congratulations to Dave, and thanks to all those who took part.

Sadly, this may be the last opportunity for quite some time. Please look out for our ticket sellers as they come round during the first half of today’s game. Good luck to all our regulars. Keep well and keep safe
