Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei © Lonely Planet 305 Terengganu Some places evoke a colour. In this case Terengganu is, far and away, blue. The rich robin’s- egg blue of big skies bending under clear, bright sunlight. The deep, royal blue of the ocean running behind ferries to tropical paradise. The turtle-dotted teal of shallow lagoons and horseshoe bays lapping the sugar sands in Pulau Perhentian (the Perhentian Islands). And the organic, vegetative green-blue of Lake Kenyir, vine-shrouded in its jungle womb. Blue is a cooling colour, and the general laid-back vibe of Terengganu makes for a cool- ing escape – something about the slow pace of life makes relaxed sighs some of the most common means of communication here. Most travellers come to the state for an island experience, and they’re in the right spot: some of the best beaches in the country can be found on Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Redang and Pulau Kapas. Divers in particular are well cared for here, but if you’re up for doing nothing at all, Terengganu will indulge your indolence. But don’t completely dismiss mainland Terengganu from your exploration. This is one of the most ethnically Malay states in the country, and you have the opportunity here to engage the Malay people at, simultaneously, their most traditional, their most evolving – note the waves of modernity replacing the traditional stilt houses of Kuala Terengganu, the capital, with air-con condos – and their most Islamic. They’re also, we’d note, at their most friendly when dealing with travellers who’ve wandered off the beach. So enjoy the sun and sand and their considerable charms, and don’t forget to engage the real Malaysia hidden behind the palms. • Students' Perceptions Concerning the Site Visit in History, ICSS, Malaysia
Uluslar arası Sosyal Bilimler Eğitimi Dergisi - USBED• International Social Science Education of Journal – ISSEJ Yaz/Summer Volume I Issue I Article II Students’ Perceptions Concerning the Site Visit in History, ICSS, Malaysia MohamadJohdiSalleh * Abstract The study is essentially an exploratory survey, which sets out to obtain some concrete information on the students’ perception concerning the site visit in the teaching and learning of history, Integrated Curriculum for Secondary Schools (ICSS) Malaysia. The researcher employed the ‘convenience sampling’ method and selected two states in Malaysia, namely Perak and Terengganu, involving four hundred students from each state. The data was collected through distribution of questionnaire and interviews. The findings of the questionnaire reveal that the score in Perakwas higher than Terengganu, boys score higher than girls, Form Four score the highest among the level of education, and, interestingly, both science and religious have the same number of responses in the type of schools categories. As an addition, it was discovered from interviews that site visits allow for student-centred learning, giving students the chance to improve their own skills in using concrete evidence and developing essential historical skills. At the same time it enables students to develop truly cross-curricular skills of various subjects including mathematics and science. It is hoped that the study would raise concern, awareness and benefit to all involved in the teaching and learning of history in the ICSS Malaysia, and school students across the world in this era of globalization. Keywords: students’ perceptions – site visits - advantages Introduction The history fieldwork was introduced into the Integrated Curriculum for Secondary Schools (ICSS) Malaysia in 1988 and reviewed in 2000 and 2008.

  • Seasonal Variability of Groundwater Quality in Kapas Island
Chapter Seasonal Variability of Groundwater Quality in Kapas Island, Terengganu, Malaysia Mohmadisa Hashim, Arijatul Wardah Ahmad, Zahid Mat Said, Nasir Nayan, Hanifah Mahat, Yazid Saleh and Koh Liew See Abstract The chapter aims to evaluate the groundwater quality levels in Kapas Island, Terengganu, Malaysia during the monsoon changes of the Southwest Monsoon (SWM), Monsoon Transition (MT) and Northeast Monsoon (NEM) in 2018. Four locations were used for groundwater sampling namely, the Kapas Coral Beach Resort, Kapas Beach Chalet, Pak Ya Seaview Chalet, and Kapas Island Resort. Three water samplings at each station for every month in the monsoon. Six parameters of the Malaysian Water Quality Index (WQI), i.e., dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS) and ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N), were used to evaluate the water quality. The findings showed the groundwater quality parameters are in Class I and II. However, according to WQI Malaysia, the water quality status during the three monsoons is slightly polluted. During the SWM, the WQI value was 76 (Class III), the MT was 77 (Class II), and the NEM was WQI 71 (Class III). Given this status, it requires more intensive water treatment as it is not suitable for direct drinking water supply. The implications of the study show that the quality of groundwater in Kapas Island has to improve by the tour operators. Keywords: water quality index, groundwater, slightly polluted, water treatment, island tourism 1. Introduction The increase in the population of an area will have an impact on the demand for clean water supply.

The Needs of Sustainability Solid Waste Management in Perhentian Island, Terengganu Siti Aisyah Saat, University Malaysia Terengganu, Malaysia The European Conference on Sustainability, Energy & the Environment 2017 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract Malaysia is blessed with many idyllic tropical islands favoured by many an ecotourist. Perhentian Island, located in the South China Sea at the northeastern corner of Peninsular Malaysia, has been one of the favorites whose tourism activities have increased considerably. The recent annual tourist arrival for the island is about sixty thousands, compared to a local population of only one thousand three hundreds residing in the only village on the island. Located about 21 km offshore, the 15 km island has seen its number of resorts grow from five (~100 rooms) in 1985 to more than forty now (~1200 rooms ).With growth comes the problem of managing the solid waste generated by the island’s tourism industry. The large amount of wastes produced by tourist is a difficult problem for small islands particularly since it is typically generated over a short period, thereby often overloading existing disposal and treatment facilities. Onsite burying of solid waste that was practiced during its early days of tourism business is no longer suitable and sustainable due to land scarcity. The current practice of hauling the waste to be landfilled on the mainland 21 km away is viewed by many to be uneconomical and is putting unwanted stress on the fast-shrinking landfill space. The local authority administering the island is now looking for a better way of managing this waste. Therefore, protection of the environment from pollution is extremely important in small island, since aside from other reasons that are common to all countries, two important industries, tourism and fisheries, depend on a pristine environment.
