The evaluation was carried out to fulfil a planning condition attached to planning permission for a proposed new swimming pool contained within a new single-storey side extension to the manor (Planning Ref: 06/3313). Cheddington Manor House is grade II Listed and was built in the late 16th to early 17th century but has been subject to much alteration (CAS 529202). Archaeological remains relating to the earlier medieval manor might be located on the site. The site lies 700m north of a scheduled multivallate hillfort, miscellaneous earthworks, including possible lynchets have been recorded on the chalk hillside adjacent to the manor house (CAS1271). In the event the evaluation revealed early modern brick garden walls 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 In April 2010 Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) carried out an archaeological evaluation at Cheddington Manor, Manor Road, Cheddington, Buckinghamshire (NGR SP 9166 1739; Figs. 1 & 2). The evaluation was commissioned by Mr Hart of Cheddington Manor, and was carried out to fulfil a planning condition attached to planning permission for a proposed new swimming pool contained within a new single-storey side extension (Planning Ref: 06/3313, replaced by subsequent permission 07/02716/APP)). 1.2 The archaeological evaluation was conducted in accordance with a brief issued by Buckinghamshire County Archaeological Service (dated 27/02/2007), and a written scheme of investigation (specification) prepared by AS (dated 24/0310). The project conformed to the procedures outlined in the Institute for Archaeologists’ (IfA) Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Field Evaluation (revised 2001). 1.3 The field evaluation aimed to gather sufficient information to generate a reliable predictive model of the extent, character, date, state of preservation and depth of burial of important archaeological remains, if present, within the study area. The brief requires the excavation of a trial trench within the footprint of the area of the new extension/swimming pool for this purpose. Cheddington Manor, Buckinghamshire. Archaeological Evaluation 4 © Archaeological Solutions Ltd 2010 1.4 The principal objectives of the archaeological trial trench evaluation are: To collate, verify and assess all information relevant to presence, survival and character of archaeological remains/ structures within the study area; To provide a predictive model of the sub-surface deposits likely to be present on the site and assess their archaeological significance; and To establish the presence or absence of medieval or post-medieval structures associated with the manorial/moated site Planning policy context 1.5 The relevant planning policies which apply to the effect of development with regard to cultural heritage are Planning Policy Guidance Note 15 ‘Planning and the Historic Environment’ (PPG15) and Planning Policy Guidance Note 16 ‘Archaeology and Planning’ (PPG16) (Department of the Environment). 1.6 PPG16 (1990) is the national Planning Policy Guidance Note which applies to archaeology. It states that there should always be a presumption in favour of preserving nationally important archaeological remains in situ. However, when there is no overriding case for preservation, developers are required to fund opportunities for the recording and, where necessary, the excavation of the site. This condition is widely applied by local authorities. 1.7 PPG15 (1994) is the national Planning Policy Guidance Note which applies to the conservation of the historic environment by protecting the character and appearance of Conservation Areas and protecting listed buildings (of architectural or historical interest) from demolition and unsympathetic change and safeguarding their settings as far as is possible. This condition is also widely applied by local authorities. 2 DESCRIPTION OF THE SITE (Fig. 1-2) 2.1 Cheddington is a village and civil parish located within the Aylesbury Vale district of Buckinghamshire. The village is located c.10 km north-east of Aylesbury and c.5.5km to the north of Tring, in Hertfordshire. 2.2 The site lies within an area of archaeological potential within the grounds of Cheddington Manor, a Grade II Listed structure (Appendix 2) believed to date back to at least the 16th century. The site covers an area of c.200m2, and comprises the area of the proposed single storey extension to accommodate a swimming pool. 3 TOPOGRAPHY, GEOLOGY AND SOILS 3.1 The site lies at c. 105m AOD on the north-eastern edge of the village Cheddington Manor, Buckinghamshire. The land rises fairly steeply to the south and south-east forming two elevated areas which overlook the surrounding landscape. 3.2 The geology of the area comprises Oxford clay (BGS 1978). Cheddington lies at the boundary of two different soil associations, Wantage 1 soils and Evesham 2 soils (SSEW 1983). Soils of the Wantage 1 association are characterised as well drained calcareous silty soils, while soils of the Evesham 2 association are described as slowly permeable calcareous clayey soils, with some slowly permeable seasonally waterlogged non-calcareous clayey and fine loamy or fine silty over clayey soils. 4 ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL BACKGROUND (Fig. 3) Prehistoric (before AD 43) 4.1 Few prehistoric remains have been recorded in the area around Cheddington, the main focus of activity in the area would have been the multivallate hillfort at Southend Hill, which has been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (CAS 4039, SAM 29410). The hillfort consists of a circular enclosure of approximately 5ha which is defined by a pair of concentric ditches which encircle the summit of the hill, the ditches are a width of c.5m and are 15 to 20m apart. The hillfort at Southend Hill is of particular archaeological interest as it is located c.4km to the

This site is one of several hundred designed landscapes county‐wide identified by Bucks County Council (BCC) in 1998 (including Milton Keynes District) as potentially retaining evidence of historic interest, as part of the Historic Parks and Gardens Register Review project carried out for English Heritage (now Historic England) (BCC Report No. 508).     Domestic 3: Suburban and Country Houses Listing Selection Guide Summary Historic England’s twenty listing selection guides help to define which historic buildings are likely to meet the relevant tests for national designation and be included on the National Heritage List for England. Listing has been in place since 1947 and operates under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. If a building is felt to meet the necessary standards, it is added to the List. This decision is taken by the Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). These selection guides were originally produced by English Heritage in 2011: slightly revised versions are now being published by its successor body, Historic England. The DCMS‘ Principles of Selection for Listing Buildings set out the over-arching criteria of special architectural or historic interest required for listing and the guides provide more detail of relevant considerations for determining such interest for particular building types.     Aston Clinton House, Buckinghamshire Diana Gulland, Archivist of the Buckinghamshire Archeological Society, charts the history of a lost Rothschild house IN RESEARCH WHICH I HAVE RECENTLY carried out on the Lake family estates in Aston Clinton I have sought to lift the curtain of obscurity which has hung over the origins of the house which Sir Anthony de Rothschild and his family made their country residence from 1853 to 1923.1 Material in The Rothschild Archive has proved invaluable in the search for the true story. Aston Clinton lies beside the A41 (formerly the Sparrows Herne Turnpike Road from Bushey Heath (Watford) to Aylesbury). The village, and most of the park of the former Aston Clinton House to the south of it, stands on the level, water-retaining surface of the Gault Clay. Special Collections and Archives Ref: MS 281 Title: Devey Collection Scope: Drawings and photographs relating to the work of the architect George Devey (1820- 1886) Dates: c.1856-1886 Level: Fonds Extent: 1 box plus one volume Name of creator: George Devey Administrative / biographical history: The collection is in two sections: the first, consisting of 95 loose but numbered items which are chiefly a selection of drawings in pencil, watercolour, and, in a few cases, ink, but also including some photographs, and the second, an album into which have been pasted 135 items which are almost all photographs but which also include some pencil sketches. The drawings are the work of the 19th century architect George Devey, and the photographs are of buildings on which he worked, or, in a few other cases, which he recorded out of interest - these Victorian photographs are of considerable interest in themselves, though it is not currently known whether any are his own work or whether they were all created on his instructions. Devey took a great interest in the progress of the building of his designs, and habitually had them photographed whilst under construction as well as after completion. In this collection he may be seen, in a somewhat theatrical pose, on one photograph during building at Coombe Warren. The documents were presented to the University of Sheffield Library towards the end of 1914, and an article by W.S. Purchon, MA, ARIBA, Head of the Department of Architecture at Sheffield in the Journal of the Royal Institute of British Architects for December 1914 relates how they were donated by James Williams, Devey's former partner in the firm of Devey & Williams, who had first joined the firm in 1870 and who became a partner in 1876.

  • Mr Warren's Photograph Album: Memories of a Vanished Rothschild Estate
    The collections of The Rothschild Archive are remarkable in their scope and variety. It is Mr Warren’s photograph album: often the personal documents in the collection that repay detailed investigation. Such an item is accession 000/2126, the item known to us as Mr Warren’s photograph album, acquired by The memories of a vanished Rothschild estate Rothschild Archive in November 2012, a volume that can immediately transport us through the years by showing us images frozen in time.
