Heiges Field House is the home court of Shippensburg University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams. Heiges also serves as the home for the wrestling, volleyball and swimming teams. The facility is also used for high school tournament games, university open houses, winter commencement ceremonies, concerts, and is the site of the PIAA state gymnastics championships. In 2007, over 2,500 fans witnessed the PIAA basketball state semifinal contest between James Buchanan and Greencastle-Antrim. When constructed in 1971, Heiges Field House was the second largest wooden-domed structure in the world. Besides the main arena, the field house contains offices, equipment rooms, a wrestling room, weight room, four handball courts, a weight-training fitness cen- ter an a natatorium with a six-lane, 25-yard pool and electronic timing. After extensive renovations to the facility that included new bleachers, the 2007-08 season marked the first that the arena featured a wooden playing surface. The floor was helped made possible through the support of Gannon Associates, who made a 10-year com- mitment that supports the University, men’s basketball, track and field and the athletics department. The company’s logo is featured prominently on the new floor. The floor was designed by Connor Floor who has designed playing surfaces for the likes of the University of North Carolina and the University of Kansas as well as having constructed floors for NCAA Final Four competition at the RCA Dome and the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. It is removed during the offseason. The women’s team has also thrived inside Heiges Field House. In nine seasons under the direction of head coach Kristy Trn, the Lady Raiders have posted a 121-42 record. That success correlates to a winning percentage of .742. The largest crowds for women’s basket- ball games was 1,300 for Clarion and the celebration of National Women and Girls in Sports Day on Feb. 21, 1998.

SCHEDULE One important difference with the 2011-12 schedule involves the inclu- sion of every PSAC Western Division team as an opponent. Addition- ally, all crossover matchups will count in the standings in addition to the already scheduled home-and-home series against Eastern Division opponents. Therefore, 22 of the team’s 26 contests this season will be considered “conference” games. “It changes your approach and really the urgency of what you need to work on right away,” Trn said. “Your third game of the season could make or break whether you get into the playoffs or not. We’re very excited about that challenge.” Shippensburg opens its season inside Heiges Field House against Saint Michael’s and either Charleston or Chowan in the annual Wolf ’s Bus Lines Tournament. The season-opening games are back to a tipoff for- mat, with the winners on Saturday facing off the next day. Before January, the Lady Raiders will have also faced UDC – an NCAA tournament team two years ago – along with PSAC West powerhouses IUP and California (Pa.). West Virginia Wesleyan, always among the WVIAC’s elite, comes calling in December along with Merrimack from the NE-10. Despite the mandated PSAC crossover schedule resulting in Shippensburg facing California (Pa.) and Indiana (Pa.) on the second weekend of the season, the Lady Raiders have the luxury of playing their first seven games at home before finally hitting the road on December 9 and 10 for crossovers at Clarion and Gannon. Shippensburg is in its fourth season as a member of the PSAC Eastern Division after spending 21 seasons in the PSAC West. Since joining the Western Division prior to the 1987-88 season, the Lady Raiders won six PSAC West titles, the most of any current Western Division team.
