This study focuses on Chinese female immigrants, bakery salesladies and social workers, to addresses a gap in the existing literature, which has previously emphasized factory workers and students, on gender role identity development at the interface of social context and activity system dynamics. To understand further the Chinese fe- male immigration experience, this research investigates how gender role identity is manifested across different social contexts and institutions. I administered questionnaires and conducted in- terviews with Chinese female immigrants residing in New York City. The sample consisted of two groups with different occupations, educational backgrounds, socio-economic statuses, and levels of cultural assimilation: bakery salesladies and social workers. I captured the process of gender role identity development through participants’ own voices and narratives. I analyzed the data and discussed it in light of an activity theory framework. The key finding was that, for both groups, gender role identity was deeply influenced by traditional Chinese ideology including the v traditional gender hierarchy, male supremacy, and the values of modesty, and maintaining inter- personal harmony. Bakery salesladies encountered less conflict at work and were more likely to avoid conflict at home. In contrast, social workers expressed a greater predisposition to voice their opinions without being confrontational at work and were ready to halt conversations when they sensed that their husbands were getting upset. Furthermore, in terms of life goals, the bakery salesladies tended to focus on their family needs and perceive the success of family members as their own success, whereas the social workers often had aspirations that went beyond traditional gender roles and valued and aspired to contributing to society. The findings reveal gender role identity to be an active and non-homogenous process of "doing gender" through which women negotiate various positions across cultural contexts, social locations, histories and ideologies within their unique activity systems. vi Acknowledgements It has been a long journey and many people have influenced this work in many ways, large and small.     5 weaPons of mass seduction Performing Pop Masculinity To all intents and purposes Harry Styles, unofficial frontman of internationally renowned boy band One Direction, could easily be mistaken for a young Mick Jagger (see Figure 5.1). The men’s good looks, broad smiles, matching windswept hair styles and shared fashion sensibilities bridge a 51-year age gap. Both are singers who have enjoyed the adoration of a passionate fan following, yet in terms of the version of masculinity each represents, the two could not be more different. While Jagger is openly admired by both sexes, few men admit to being fans of Harry Styles whose following is commonly depicted as restricted to teen and pre-teen females. Unlike the older man, Styles radiates a wholesome, good humoured exuberance, appears to genuinely like female company and is never happier than when exalting the women in his life. He also differs from the Rolling Stones leader in showing a marked preference for older female partners, whereas Jagger figure 5.1 Harry Styles. 84 Weapons of Mass Seduction is always seen in the company of much younger women.1 Jagger’s androgy- nous charm is tinged with danger and more than a hint of misogyny: he has a reputation for treating his partners callously, and from the outset, chauvinism themes of mistrust permeated the Rolling Stones’ songbook.2 The younger singer is also androgynous but his failure to comply with core characteristics of normative masculinity underscores much of the antipathy directed towards by critics, highlighting deeply entrenched prejudice against those who fail to comply with accepted expressions of gender.

    Issue Brief June 14, 2021 Women’s Rights in China and Feminism on Chinese Social Media Frida Lindberg In recent years, women in China have to a greater extent than previously raised their voices about issues relating to women’s rights and gender equality. Social media has served as an important tool and venue for women to share their own experiences with sexual harassment, domestic violence, and gender discrimination in the labor market. Yet, while the feminist movement has been on the rise over the past ten years, feminists and women in China who speak up about gender-related issues nevertheless face threats, antagonism, and censorship online.1China has stated that it aims to empower women and protect their rights.2 However, activities and discourses that have the potential to disturb the existing social order or challenge the authorities are not tolerated by the government, as social stability is one of its top priorities.3,4 This paper addresses how women and feminists in China use social media to speak up, while at the same time having to cope with gender antagonism in Chinese society and monitoring efforts by the government.
