Spruce Grove Ringette Association Sweetheart Tournament
On behalf of Spruce Grove City Council and our residents, it’s my pleasure to welcome you to Spruce Grove for the 2019 Sweetheart Ringette Tournament. With more than 1,000 athletes representing over 60 teams and 435 families from across Western Canada, this weekend is sure to be packed with high calibre competition and a rich exchange of community spirit.
We’re always happy to have competitions like this come to Spruce Grove. They promote sportsmanship, provide a wonderful opportunity for personal and athletic development, and allow our local athletes and sports families to connect with others from around the country.
I hope you enjoy your visit and I encourage you to make the most of your stay. We are proud to offer a wide variety of shops, restaurants and services in Spruce Grove. On behalf of the SGRA Board and the entire membership of Spruce Grove Ringette Association, we are excited to welcome 66 teams, 1030 athletes, 265 coaches and 36 referees and their parents and fans from around Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan to the tri-community area. Thank you all for your dedication and for providing athletes with the opportunity to grow and learn through the sport of ringette. It is sure to be an action-packed few days, filled with some truly impressive skills. We trust that through good sportsmanship, friendship and competitive play, this tournament will be fun and memorable for all. We hope you enjoy your time with us. The Sweetheart Tournament has gained a reputation for one of the biggest sporting events in the tri-community area. It’s great to see the growth and momentum with our sport. Between games, make sure you take in some special events throughout the tournament. A friendly coach’s game on Saturday, retail vendors & a photo booth to name a few. Plus, enjoy all the amenities and attractions that the tri-community area - Parkland County, Town of Stony Plain and City of Spruce Grove – has to offer. These individuals and organizations have given their time, gifts in kind and generous donations to make the tournament more fun and a little more affordable for all. Without their support, this event would not be possible. Volunteers are the heart of any sport association and the Sweetheart tournament in particular. We’d like to thank each one of our “too many to count” volunteers, especially those who served on our tournament committee. When you see a volunteer at the registration table, doing 50- 50 raffles or countless other roles, take the time to say, “thank you – we appreciate it”. This tournament would not be successful without their commitment, perseverance and hundreds (and hundreds!) of hours of hard work. To the athletes, good luck in your ringette games. The Tri-municipal region has a strong history of community involvement and joint-partnerships. Residents, local service clubs and organizations and local businesses are well known for their support of community initiatives. This championship is no exception and could not be possible without the unwavering commitment and efforts of the many volunteers who have given of their time and energy. Such dedication and participation demonstrates the heart of our tri-regional community.

This role is “Parent Liaison”. *****THIS ROLE IS MANDATORY AND WILL BE MONITORED**** The purpose of this role is to improve the players experience and assist the officials and coaches at the game with spectator management by: * Prevention * Intervention * Communication Great fans support, encourage and cheer! They also represent their team, their association and their community with dignity and are important role models for our young athletes to learn from. The Parent Liaison cannot be a Coach or a Manager. You can have the same per- son all weekend or a different person every game. Parent Liaison Duties 1. Wear the Parent Liaison neck lanyard during every game - this will be included in your package you will pick up at your first game. 2. Place yourself in the middle of your team’s spectators. Don’t sit way off to the side or at the end of the rink - BE VISIBLE. 3. Monitor the behavior of ALL your team’s spectators that have come to watch the game. 4. Quickly diffuse potential issues before they escalate by making your presence visible to the spectator and calmly addressing the behavior with the person(s) involved. 5. Ensure communication is EFFECTIVE and not COMBATIVE. 6. The Parent Liaison has full authority to ask any spectator causing an issue to leave the arena immediately. The Parent Liaison must be an individual who is willing and able to control and monitor the behavior of the spectators throughout the game by: * Stepping Up * Stepping In This role is to be taken seriously with the goal being to support the spectators in the game to follow the rules as set forth in the Code of Conduct as well as maintaining respect for the officials and the opposing team. The abuse of game officials by spectators is the main reason why they (especially those in their teens) drop out of the development program. As a result, we face shortages of game officials at all levels. Addressing this unacceptable behavior is a priority for SGRA.
Inappropriate behavior can include the following: * banging on the glass or boards * making abusive comments to the officials/players or other teams spectators. * using profanity * going to areas of the arena that are not spectator seating * throwing objects

SPECTATOR CODE OF CONDUCT WHEN ATTENDING GAMES, SPECTATORS ARE EXPECTED TO: • Play a positive role in the sport of Ringette. • Support the referees and coaches by trusting in their judgement and integrity. • Encourage the players to abide by the Tournament rules. • Respect the officials’ decisions and encourage the players to do the same. • Remember that players play for their own enjoyment, not yours. • Encourage the player’s effort by only making positive comments. • Cheer the plays and performance of both teams and use only positive language. • Support the game by being a positive fan. • Help keep the facility clean by throwing garbage in the appropriate waste bins. UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR INCLUDES: • Verbal or physical abuse of any kind. • Questioning of any officials and/or coaches decisions, or honesty in public. • Harassing of players, coaches, officials, staff, volunteers or other spectators. • Using profane or foul language. • Interfering with the game or event. • Cheering for mistakes or errors by the opponent teams. If a spectator does not adhere to the above code of conduct, they will be asked to leave the facility. THE UNIVERSITY RINGETTE TEAM FAST FACTS
- The University Ringette Team is one of more than 25 universities in Canada that have a competitive ringette team. More teams are set to hit the ice in 2019/2020.
- Ringette scholarships, totaling $50,000, will be available to University Ringette players for the 2018/2019 season. For the 2017/2018 season, 14 University Ringette scholarship recipients collectively achieved an incredible GPA of 3.5! All University Ringette Team members pursue full time post-secondary studies at one of the following universities: MacEwan, Alberta, Concordia or NAIT.
- Our “Kids in the Crowd” program allows coaches to bring their entire team to see a University Ringette game. Fun, prizes and fast paced action are waiting. This program is totally free! Complete details are available on our website.
- Three weeks of ringette skills development camps are hosted each year in August. Taught by four time Canadian National Champion University Ringette players, these camps will take your daughter’s game to the next level. Details on website.
- University Ringette players are available to visit Edmonton area elementary and junior high schools to discuss academic excellence and athletic achievement. As well, the University Ringette athletes play gym ringette with the school kids. Complete details on how to book a school visit are posted on our website.
- Each year, the Canadian University Ringette League hosts the University Challenge Cup. The UCC is a national showcase of ringette skill and talent and will be held next in January 2019. The University Ringette Team is four time national champion, winning gold medals in 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015.
- In 2014 the University Ringette Team was inducted into the City of Edmonton Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of its accomplishments on and off the ice!
- Each year the University Ringette Team hosts Ringette Scores On Cancer at West Edmonton Mall. To-date, this event has raised $750,000 for cancer research. 2019 Tournament Rules Sanctioning by Ringette Alberta will be followed except as noted below:
1. All teams, major and minor officials and fans will show good sportsmanship and fair play throughout the tournament and adhere to the SWEETHEART TOURNAMENT CODE OF CONDUCT. 2. The Official Rules of Ringette Canada will apply. 3. All teams must be available to start tournament play any time after 7:00 a.m. on Friday, February 15th. 4. Teams in Active Start, U10-Step 1, U10-Step 2, U10-Step 3, U12A, U12C, U14AA, U16AA, U16A, U19AA, U19B and Open B divisions will play three (3) games in round robin format. The top two (2) teams from the U12A, U16AA, U16A, U19AA and Open B divisions will advance to the finals. The top four (4) teams in U10-Step 2, U10-Step 3, U12C, U14AA and U19B will advance to the semi-finals. There will be no finals for Active Start or U10-Step 1; it is a friendship tournament with awards given to all participants. 5. All players must be from one team and must be registered with their applicable provincial or zone body. Teams must be registered in the same division (or higher) as indicated on their Provincial Registration Form. Prior to playing their first game, all coaches/team representative(s) will be required to verify their roster by providing a copy of their Provincial Registration Form and picking up their coach’s package at the registration table. Teams who do not provide their Provincial Registration Form will forfeit their game(s) until it is provided to the Tournament. 6. In case of conflict in uniform colours, the visiting team will be required to change uniforms. 7. Teams must be ready to go on the ice ten (10) minutes before game time. Teams not iced within two (2) minutes of the referee’s whistle being blown to start the game will forfeit the game. However, the game will be played as an exhibition game. 8. Game sheets are to be completed and signed by the coach at least fifteen (15) minutes prior to game time at the registration table. Goaltender(s), captains and alternate captains must be declared on the game sheet by indicating (G), (C), and (AC). Teams are required to strike the names of players who are not participating in a game on the score sheet to ensure proper verification. 9. Teams must declare affiliated players on game sheets by indicating (AP). It is the responsibility of the team to ensure Ringette Alberta affiliated player rules are followed. When using affiliates the name(s) of the player(s) and their jersey number must be written in the appropriate space on the game sheet. Game sheets will be checked for proper use of affiliated players. 10. The maximum number of players listed on a game sheet: No Affiliates – 18, Affiliated Skaters ONLY – 12, Affiliated Skaters AND Affiliate Goalie – 13, Affiliated Goalie ONLY – 18. 11. All affiliate and/or overage players will be restricted to three (3) goals per game. 12. Each team will be required to provide minor officials for each game. The Home Team, as listed on the game sheet, is required to provide a timekeeper, a shot clock operator, and a penalty box attendant. (If no shot clock is required, the home team will provide only the timekeeper and penalty box volunteer.) The Visiting Team, as listed on the game sheet, is required to provide a scorekeeper and a penalty box attendant. SGRA will provide ALL minor officials for semi-finals and finals. 13. Car keys must be left in exchange for the shot clock remote. It can be picked up at the registration table. 14. In medal games the higher ranked team shall be declared the home team. 15. Time-Outs: Each team is entitled to ONE (1) 30-second timeout per regulation game. Each team is entitled to ONE (1) additional 30-second timeout in overtime. 16. There will be a two (2) minute break between halves and a flood will be scheduled between all games. 17. Game scores will be displayed on the time clock, posted in arenas and recorded for tie breaking procedures with a maximum five (5) goal difference. 18. If only five (5) minutes remain in an assigned time slot, the clock will be reset to two (2) minutes at the first stoppage of play. 19. A MATCH PENALTY will automatically result in suspension from all subsequent tournament games. 20. Any team accumulating more than thirty (30) penalty minutes in any one game shall see the head coach or acting head coach for the game suspended for their next tournament game. No grievances will be accepted. 21. No unacceptable behavior (profanity, temper-tantrums, or verbal abuse of officials etc.) will be tolerated. This behavior will result in (at minimum) an unsportsmanlike penalty. A second offence in the same game by the same player will result in (at minimum) a misconduct. (also see 2019 Sweetheart Tournament Code of Conduct) 22. All referee decisions are final. There will be no appeals or discussions of appeals. 23. NO U10 PLAYER IS TO BE CREDITED WITH MORE THAN THREE (3) GOALS IN ANY ONE TOURNAMENT GAME. GOALS SCORED IN EXCESS OF THIS BY ANY PLAYER SHALL NOT BE RECORDED ON THE GAME SHEET, SHALL NOT BE POSTED ON THE SCORE CLOCK AND SHALL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE FINAL SCORE AT THE END OF THE GAME.

ROUND ROBIN TEAM STANDING RULES Teams will be awarded points as follows: Twenty (20) points for a win; Ten (10) points for a tie; Loss by: 1 Goal: Five (5) Points 2 Goals: Four (4) Points 3 Goals: Three (3) Points 4 Goals: Two (2) Points 5 Goals: One (1) Point Forfeit: 0 Points
At the completion of round robin play, teams will be ranked according to the total points in all games played.
TEAM STANDING TIE BREAKING PROCEDURE Please note: Regardless of game score, only a FIVE goal difference will be credited in applying these rules. When two or more teams have an equal number of points after round robin play, the teams will be ranked according to the following rules: The winner of the game(s) between each other during the round robin will be declared the highest position. If still tied, teams shall be ranked by fewest penalty minutes. If still tied, teams shall be ranked by coin toss (called by the visiting team).
NOTE: Each step of the tie breaking rules shall apply to the teams involved in the tie. If there are more than two teams tied, revert back to #1 after one team’s ranking has been determined.
TOURNAMENT GAME TIE BREAKING PROCEDURE Round robin games shall end in a tie with points awarded as indicated. If a game is tied at the end of the second half of a FINAL GAME, the teams will immediately play a five (5) minute stop time SUDDEN VICTORY period (the first team to score will be declared the winner). Possession of the ring will be determined by a coin toss. If no goals are scored in the overtime period, there will be a 5 round shoot out. If still tied after 5 round shoot out, teams shall be ranked by fewest penalty minutes in current game. If still tied, teams shall be ranked by coin toss (called by the visiting team).
Note: Penalties assessed in regulation shall carry over to the next period. Each team is entitled to one (1) thirty (30) second timeout per regulation game and one (1) additional thirty (30) second timeout in overtime. 4 Golden Spike Rd, Spruce Grove M-F 8 to 6pm Sat 8-3pm
