Position overview WEHI, in partnership with Bio21, has invested into Cryo-electron microscopy resources housed at the ’s Advanced Microscopy Facility, of particular note in the purchase of a Krios G4 Cryo-TEM from Thermo Fisher to be commissioned in the second half of 2020. The WEHI CryoEM facility manager will work closely with WEHI researchers to provide high-level CryoEM expertise, to oversee access to and use of Bio21-based CryoEM resources, advise on sample preparation and assist with data processing for CryoEM single particle reconstruction. Whilst the successful applicant will be 100% employed by WEHI, they will be located 50% at WEHI and 50% at the nearby Bio21 Advanced Microscopy Facility.

The Institute has recently invested into CryoEM instrumentation in partnership with the nearby University of , including a significant co-investment into the purchase of a Titan Krios. Institute researchers also benefit from ready access to essential structural biology core facilities including the CSIRO C3 crystallization center, the Bio21 Magnetic Resonance facility and the Australian Synchrotron.

Key Relationships • Structural Biology Division Heads – to coordinate resources, support strategic technology directions • Bio21 Advanced Microscopy Facility manager and staff – to oversee and assist in the day-to-day use and maintenance of the Bio21 Advanced Microscopy facility instrumentation with an emphasis on cryoEM. • Director – to confer on Institute goals • Deputy Director Science Strategy – to confer on finances, compliance, risk, safety and scientific strategy • Theme Leaders – to promote scientific excellence and to contribute to broader Theme initiatives and strategies • Laboratory Heads – to discuss research and strategic technology direction and collaboration in regard to CryoEM technology and methodology. • WEHI Laboratory staff and students – oversee and assist in the day-to-day access and usage of Bio21- housed CryoEM resources. • Expert panels and committees – to contribute to the wider development of CryoEM research within the Institute and externally • Professional Services team – to support the operations of WEHI CryoEM investments at the Bio21 Advanced Microscopy facility. Key Selection Criteria Knowledge and skills • A PhD or equivalent in structural biology • Advanced hands-on research experience in using electron cryomicroscopes to investigate macromolecular complexes • Advanced experience in using cryoEM reconstruction algorithms (Relion, EMAN2, cryosparc …).

• High-level interpersonal communications skills and the ability to liaise with staff and research students, professional/ technical staff and clients from industry • Demonstrated ability to listen to others, actively contribute to the team and demonstrate flexibility in adapting to team priorities • Demonstrated leadership skills needed to provide high-level advice to key stakeholders • High quality research publications in international peer-reviewed journals in structural biology • Advanced experience in scripting (Python and other languages) (Desirable) • Demonstrated high-level skills and experience in electron tomography, subtomogram averaging and microED (Desirable) • Experience in cryo Focussed Ion Beam lamella preparation (Desirable) • Experience in the development of new techniques that extend the capabilities of electron microscopy experiments, either through the development of new methodologies and/or instrumentation and/or software and/or theories (Desirable) Key Accountabilities

Research Performance • Oversee and assist in the day-to-day use and maintenance of the Bio21 Advanced Microscopy facility instrumentation with an emphasis on cryoEM • Work as an integrated member of the Bio21 Advanced Microscopy facility team and within the scope and guidelines of the Facility manager • Provide high-level expertise, advice and assistance to WEHI users of the Bio21 Institute Advanced Microscopy Facility users to undertake research projects using these instruments • Develop or apply best practice procedures and methods for CryoEM research activities • Lead and/or contribute to the preparation and submission of competitive grants for new equipment in the Bio21 Institute Advanced Microscopy Facility according to the strategic goals of the facility • Represent the Institute at conferences in the field of expertise and contribute to appropriate internal and external committees and organizations

People Management: • Plan and deliver CryoEM-related training for WEHI staff and students • Effective liaison with internal and external networks to foster CryoEM related collaborative partnerships

Financial Management • Advise on financial management of WEHI use of CryoEM resources • Advise on requirements and propose technology for the laboratory • Identify potential funding sources and gain peer reviewed grants • Monitor and coordinate WEHI CryoEM resource usage and progress against budgets, and take appropriate action • Contribute to design and planning of new facilities, technology and improvements

Technology • Analyse requirements and advise on CryoEM technology investments for the Institute • Provide technical advice and problem solving on CryoEM technology • Coordinate and prepare CryoEM laboratory technical information, standards, manuals

Commercial Relations • Identify potential commercial matters, implement appropriate procedures, and inform appropriate staff • Ensure laboratory notebook is maintained as required for intellectual property protection • Work with the business development team on commercialisation where appropriate • Contribute to commercial relations policy and procedures development and implementation when related to CryoEM

Standards & Regulatory Compliance • Oversee compliance with regulatory, ethical, and professional standards of WEHI CryoEM resources • Ensure compliance with regulatory and ethical standards for WEHI CryoEM resources • Monitor the recording and retention of research activities and results

Health, Safety & Environment • Implement health, safety and security policy within the WEHI CryoEM facilities. • Monitor compliance with safety policies, standards, legislation, procedures and good practice • Participate in appropriate health and safety committees and programs • Collaborate on audits and incident investigations and provide advice on preventive and corrective measures • Identify and respond to safety training needs of WEHI researchers using CryoEM facilities
