The schools’ usual participation was bolstered greatly by the attendance of over 800 students and staff from around the province for the 2012 Student Leadership Conference. The three-day event held last Wednesday to Friday featured motivational speakers, small-group sessions, meals and nutrition breaks and a beach-boogie dance. The event wrapped up with the run and a session by Fox’s brother Fred. The SLC committee had earlier chosen the Terry Fox Foundation as their charity of choice, and requested donations from attending students. At the end of Fox’s presentation, the committee was pleased to present him with a cheque for $32,058.14. Arts and Entertainment 4 • MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2012 • THE WATROUS MANITOU Video Views by Earl Hayhurst The Avengers - Last week Joss Whedon gave us Cab- in in the Woods, this week it is the biggest movie of the year, The Avengers. The all-star superhero actioner is a popcorn movie of the highest order as Thor (Chris Hems- worth), Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hawkeye (Jer- emy Renner) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) battle the evil Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and his army of space monster snake things. Of course those who are in the Whedon universe get all the pop culture and humour he brings to a project and the action you expect from the superhero genre. Marvellous entertainment, Hulk steals the show and though not on par with the marvellous Dark Knight Rises (my favourite movie of 2012 so far) it is a fast funny entertaining fl ick that will please all. Also in 3D on Blu-ray. (PG) Take This Waltz - Aside for our fi lmmaking treasures of David Cronenberg and Atom Egoyan, our other treas- ure is Sarah Polley.
