The schools’ usual participation was bolstered greatly by the attendance of over 800 students and staff from around the province for the 2012 Saskatchewan Student Leadership Conference. The three-day event held last Wednesday to Friday featured motivational speakers, small-group sessions, meals and nutrition breaks and a beach-boogie dance. The event wrapped up with the run and a session by Fox’s brother Fred. The SLC committee had earlier chosen the Terry Fox Foundation as their charity of choice, and requested donations from attending students. At the end of Fox’s presentation, the committee was pleased to present him with a cheque for $32,058.14. Greg Hamilton , director of national teams, junior coach, Baseball Canada (1A). No ones makes as many decisions and runs through as many mine fields as he does. This year. for example. he put together four distinct rosters: The pre-Olympic tourney in March at Taiwan; the Canadian junior team, which lost in the quarters at Edmonton in August; the Olympic team in Bejing and the 2009 junior team which headed to Florida in October. He has been negotiating with MLB teams for the World Baseball Classic, to be played at the Rogers Centre in March. • Ufc® Interim Bantamweight Champion Renan Barao Set to Clash with Eddie Wineland in Thrilling Matchup on June 15
UFC® INTERIM BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPION RENAN BARAO SET TO CLASH WITH EDDIE WINELAND IN THRILLING MATCHUP ON JUNE 15 Toronto, Canada – UFC® interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao will look for his second straight title defense against No.4 ranked contender Eddie Wineland on Saturday, June 15 when the Ultimate Fighting Championship® brings its first-ever event to Winnipeg, Manitoba with UFC® 161: BARAO vs. WINELAND at the MTS Centre. Riding one of the longest unbeaten streaks in mixed martial arts history, Barao (32-1, 1NC, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) defeated Urijah Faber in Calgary in July 2012 to win the interim title. He defended the belt in February against Michael McDonald with an impressive arm triangle choke that earned him his first Submission of the Night honours. Barao has gone 31 straight fights without a loss (30 victories, 1 no-contest). He is on an exciting 20-fight win streak and is 5-0 since making his UFC debut in May 2011. Wineland (20-8-1, fighting out of Chesterton, Indiana) is a former WEC bantamweight champion who comes into this title shot with two straight wins. Wineland defeated Scott Jorgensen in June 2012 in a Fight of the Night performance that marked the first time Jorgensen had ever been stopped via knockout. Wineland followed that up with a win over Brad Pickett in December. In the night’s co-main event, light heavyweights Rogerio “Lil Nog” Nogueira and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, will have a rematch of their legendary 2005 PRIDE® fight. The fifth-ranked Nogueira (21-5, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) has won his last two fights, both of which have been against former UFC® light heavyweight champions.

  • Mitch Clarke Knows He Isn't Your Typical Mixed Martial Arts Fighter
Clarke relies on skill, instead of gimmicks Soft-spoken Edmontonian defies fighter stereotypes BY CHRIS O'LEARY, EDMONTONJOURNAL.COM JANUARY 28, 2011 9:02 AM This story was originally published on Sept. 10, 2010. EDMONTON -- Mitch Clarke knows he isn't your typical mixed martial arts fighter. If you've seen the 24-year-old Edmonton product in action, you've already been tipped off as well. That is, if you can remember who he is. "Everyone needs a gimmick to kind of come into the forefront," he said. "I don't really have one, probably because I've got my crappy dry humour and that's it." Clarke's fighting non-persona isn't his fault. The five-foot-10, 170-pounder doesn't make any efforts to play up the MMA fighter image. He takes his entrance music -- the song that plays as he makes his way to the cage to fight -- as a chance to make his friends in the crowd laugh. "I usually come out to something different every time," he explained. When fighting Paul Grandbois in Lloydminster in March of last year, Clarke used the entrance music of 1990s WWF star the Ultimate Warrior. "I've used The Safety Dance, by Men Without Hats," he said. "I like music that's not going to get me amped up, because I'm very calm, or at least that's the plan. "I used a really, really old reggae song called Liquidator (by The Harry J All Stars) and it's used with an organ, mostly and man, did it bomb.

Wednesday » January 26 » 2011 After mixed martial arts training, fighting is a relief Conditioning coach Shara Vigeant enjoys 'kicking the butts' of her warriors to get them ready for the ring Jamie Hall The Edmonton Journal Thursday, May 28, 2009 When mixed martial arts fighters Luke Harris and Mitch Clarke step into the steel cage Saturday night at the Shaw Conference Centre for their respective bouts, they will already have faced their fiercest opponent. At 5'3" and 125 pounds, Shara Vigeant has spent weeks preparing both men for battle, pushing them to their physical limits. "I love my job. I make grown men cry," Vigeant said, jokingly. CREDIT: Bruce Edwards, the Journal "The whole idea is to put the work in Shara Vigeant is a rarity -- a female beforehand, so that when they get into strength and conditioning coach in the the cage it's a piece of cake. My job is very male-dominated world of mixed to kick their butt." martial arts. Luke Harris, left, and Mitch Clarke show the strain of their workout. A female strength and conditioning coach is an anomaly in the testosterone- filled, sometimes brutal and often bloody world of mixed martial arts, a sport that has eclipsed both boxing and wrestling in popularity, particularly in the U.S. In Canada, it is sanctioned in B.C., Quebec, Manitoba and Alberta. Its fan base is considered by many in the industry to be strongest here in Edmonton, where pay-per-view events pack sports bars and local tilts always draw noisy, enthusiastic standing-room-only crowds.

  • Raising the Fight Game
Raising the fight game In a sport traditionally dominated by men, local conditioning coach Shara Vigeant has taken mixed martial artist Tim Hague from 'fluffy' to a lean, mean, grappling machine BY CURTIS STOCK, EDMONTON JOURNAL JANUARY 20, 2011 Strength and conditioning coach Shara Vigeant and Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter Tim Hague. Photograph by: Rick MacWilliam, edmontonjournal.com She is a self-described former "fat kid." He was a kindergarten teacher. Yet through a long, winding and arduous path, Edmonton's Shara Vigeant and Sherwood Park's Tim Hague will make history Saturday night at the Fort Hood, Texas, army base. Vigeant will be one of the -- if not "the" --first Canadian females to be in the corner with a mixed martial arts fighter in an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bout. "It's a rarity," Vigeant readily and proudly admits. "I think I'm just the third girl to be in an MMA fighter's corner." "Shara is as strong-willed as any of the men I have trained with. She is one of the best strength and conditioning coaches in North America," Hague said of Vigeant, who also works with four other MMA fighters, not including two more currently between fights. Kyle Cardinal, Hague's jiu-jitsu and MMA coach will be plotting the strategy. But Vigeant will be there to offer mental, emotional and physical support. It's all part of the package, all part of the team. "I consider myself a coach, not just a trainer," she said. Then again, by the time Hague steps into the cage Vigeant's pre-fight work will be done, anyway.
