In the varsity eights grand fi nal, Princeton captured the title in a time of 6 minutes, 27.12 seconds. The Tigers led wire-to-wire as they won the varsity eight national title for the second time, the fi rst coming in 2006. While Princeton won the race, the battle for second determined the national championship. With Stanford closing the gap on Brown in the fi nal 100 meters, the Bears crossed the line in 6:28.62, just fi ve-hundredths of a second ahead of Stanford. That margin of victory was the diff erence as the two teams tied for the team championships with 85 points each. The tiebreaker to determine the national championship was the higher fi nish in the varsity eights race, giving Brown its seventh national title and third in the past fi ve years. California, which held a slim lead in the team race entering the grand fi nal, fi nished fourth in the race and third in the team championship. Princeton fi nished fourth in the team standings, followed by Southern California, Virginia, Michigan State, Washington, Wisconsin and Ohio State. Princeton was third, ahead of Washington State, Michigan, Yale and Wisconsin. In the third fi nal Clemson erased a nearly three-second defi cit in the fi nal 500 meters, but it was Dartmouth holding on for the victory in a time of 6:34.34, .46 seconds ahead of Clemson. Harvard fi nished third in the race, seven seconds back. The Division I fours title went to California, which used a strong second 500 meters to pull past Virginia and never relinquish its lead.
