The Seamy Underworld of Underground ComicsBy David SwanOf all the comic strips I have ever read Underworld probably comes in second as the most outrageous. My top honor would go to Tony Millionairersquo;s mainly because I think that Millionaire may legitimately have some mental issues. Kaz seems more calculated in his outrageousness. I already owned three Underground books so some of the material here is stuff I already own. This book contains all six paperback Underground books as well as three Underground USA books. I cannot find anything called Underground USA on so Irsquo;m not sure where those can be found but they are more recent stuff spanning the years 2009 to 2015.Underworld is an extremely dark comic strip. It takes place in a seedy part of apparently New York City that seems stuck in perpetual darkness. The city is dirty and disgusting, filled with pushers, perverts and homeless. The main characters, Creep Rat and Snuff, live in a disgusting apartment and everything is in a perpetual state of decay. Creep and Snuff spend their lives doing drugs, stealing and sometimes killing people, often each other. Sounds horrible, huh? I would say that the comic is about as cheerful as one could get given the dystopian environment.Kaz is more than just a gross out humorist. Hersquo;s often clever, occasionally brilliant but hersquo;ll almost always pushes the boundaries of good taste. In one comic Sam Snuff comes across a little girl crying because there is only one unicorn left in existence. Months later Snuff tells the girl a miracle has happened and there is another unicorn but the girls delight turns to repulsion when she sees the grotesque young unicorn/Snuff hybrid. The realization of what Snuff has done is sickening but Kaz manages to make even bestiality funny. At least for some. This book probably deserves the mother of all trigger warnings. Besides murder, defecation, drug use, incest, pedophilia, masturbation, physical deformities, suicide, necrophilia and bestiality Kaz is also not afraid to attack gun rights activists and the church. On other occasions Kaz can be quite poignant. This is the definitive Underworld collection and if the material doesnrsquo;t appall you it can be quite funny. Some of the comics include liner notes from Kaz that didnrsquo;t appear in the paperback version and I enjoyed them. A shame there werenrsquo;t more. My only complaint might be that the more recent comics didnrsquo;t seem to have the sharp comic wit of the earlier stuff. It wasnrsquo;t that Kaz wasnrsquo;t pushing the envelope just as much itrsquo;s just that the number of laugh out moments for me dropped considerably. If yoursquo;re a Kaz fan this may be the last Underworld book you ever need.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Ultimate KazBy MeesicksKaz is great. Fantagraphics has once again did a great artist justice with a well made book. The strips are a great size without the book being too bulky. My only gripe is the light grey text color used for the artist notes under some strips, but it's not a deal breaker. If you are a fan of Kaz this is well spent money. If you've never heard of Kaz you might want to google a few strips to make sure you are ready for his humor.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. At Last, at last.By BlakeTFinally, those damn-hard-to-find original editions together, plus a ton more. My favorite comic: relentless, horrifically weird, unheimlich glory. Viva Creep Rat! Bravo Snuff! Mainline it, Nuzzle!

This omnibus and retrospective collects the best of 23 years of cartoonist Kazrsquo;s alt-weekly comic strip. The Big Book of Underworld is the first-ever omnibus of the very best of the alternative weekly striprsquo;s 23-year run, with annotations, photos, and other surprises from the author (along with a foreword by Mutts creator Patrick McDonnell). Kaz's strip hilariously depicts sordid doings in a surreal city, stuffed with almost-parodies of famous comic strip characters, a healthy dose of cigarette smoking cats, cute little saccharin-cuddly creatures, media-damaged kids, and much more ? all destined for a sardonic smashing. Black white with 16 pages full color ldquo;...Kaz fits right in with the old masters. He brings their artistic sensibilities to our post-modern world. Sure, his lsquo;worldrsquo; is outrageous, demented, perverted and politically incorrect, but somehow itrsquo;s also charming, endearing, compelling and lsquo;cutersquo; in its own twisted punk way. As with all great comics, his characters are magically alive on the page. ... The best compliment I can give Kazrsquo;s work is that itrsquo;s %$#* funny. ... They donrsquo;t give out Pulitzers for hilarity, but Kaz deserves one. Hersquo;s a gag genius...rdquo; - Patrick McDonnell, (MUTTS cartoonist)ldquo; What primarily distinguishes Underworld is Kaz's dedication to the gag at its most outrageously hilarious.rdquo; - Booklistldquo; They heckle, harass, cheat, rob, bash, knife, shoot, and chop up one another with giddy glee, making Underworld the premier venue for rude, morbid, black, sick humor with a wall-to- wall grin on its disfigured face.rdquo; - Booklistldquo;Possessed by a sense of anarchy that prevents the material from growing stale or one-note. Bawdy sex jokes commingle with more heady existential material, and inside-baseball cartoonist humor alternates with the occasional political gesture.rdquo; - The A.V.
