2018 SIS Handbook 2018 Handbook For International Master’s Programs The School of International Studies, Peking University August 2018 WELCOME Dear students, Welcome to the School of International Studies (SIS), Peking University (PKU). This handbook contains essential information about your life and studies at SIS in academic year 2018-2019. We try our best to ensure that the information contained in this handbook is updated, but due to some unexpected circumstances, some arrangements mentioned in this handbook may be subject to adjustments after you settle in. In that case, we will inform you those changes. We hope that you will find in this handbook answers to most of your queries and concerns about your studies and campus life at SIS-PKU. About the School of International Studies The School of International Studies (SIS) at Peking University (PKU) is an important teaching and research platform dedicated to the training of specialized talents in international studies, international political economy and diplomacy. SIS was officially founded in 1996. However, the origins of the School can be traced back to 1960, when the Department of Political Science was established at PKU. Three years later, it was renamed the Department of International Politics. From 1996 to 1998, the Department of International Politics, the Institutes of International Relations and Afro-Asian Studies merged successively, and thus became today’s SIS. Currently, SIS has 55 faculty members, including 30 Professors, 22 Associate Professors and 3 Assistant Professors. By Spring semester 2017, SIS has about 945 registered students, including 624 students from Mainland China, 56 students from China Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and 322 international students. In terms of study programs, SIS offers three B.A. programs, eight M.A. programs, and six Ph.D. programs. The three B.A. programs

    The Other Side of the Global Imbalances: The Politics of Economic Reform in China Under the ‘New Normal’ Chen Xie PhD University of York Politics March 2018 2 Abstract In the 21st century, the ‘rise of China’ in the post-financial crisis period is arguably the most important and widely debated topic in politics and international studies. Since, the 2008 financial crisis, compared with the US, whose power appears to have diminished, it seems more and more likely that China will soon become the engine of the world economy and, perhaps, one day the global hegemon. Although the financial crisis may have not, in itself, fundamentally changed the shape of the global order, it has arguably altered perceptions. This is especially so regarding the ‘global imbalances’ that are said to have provided the macro-economic conditions for the crisis to occur. Equally, the different positions occupied by the US - as the world’s largest debtor - and China - as the world’s largest creditor - both prior to and after the crisis are suggestive of a fundamental power shift in the global order. In this thesis, I aim to add to existing understandings of the rise of China by examining the relationship between its rise and the global imbalances in the contemporary order. In order to address my thesis questions, I utilise concepts and arguments about the relationship between power, institutions and the global order provided by different scholars and theoretical traditions in IPE. Based on these, I review the experiences of Britain and the US in three key historical periods of global imbalance in 19th and 20th centuries that are analogous to the role of China in the contemporary global imbalances.

In Pursuit of the Great Peace: Han Dynasty Classicism and the Making of Early Medieval Literati Culture Abstract This dissertation is focused on communities of people in the Han dynasty (205 B.C.-A.D. 220) who possessed the knowledge of a corpus of texts: the Five Classics. Previously scholars have understood the popularity of this corpus in the Han society as a result of stiff ideology and imperial propaganda. However, this approach fails to explain why the imperial government considered them effective to convey propaganda in the first place. It does not capture the diverse range of ideas in classicism. This dissertation concentrates on Han classicists and treats them as scholars who constantly competed for attention in intellectual communities and solved problems with innovative solutions that were plausible to their contemporaries. This approach explains the nature of the apocryphal texts, which scholars have previously referred to as shallow and pseudo-scientific.

Laqueur Fall 2016 1 Abstract Strength From Within: the Chinese Internal Martial Arts as Discourse, Aesthetics, and Cultural Trope (1850-1940) by Pei-San Ng Doctor of Philosophy in Chinese Language University of California, Berkeley Professor Andrew F. Jones, Chair My dissertation explores a cultural history of the body as reflected in meditative and therapeutic forms of the Chinese martial arts in nineteenth and early twentieth-century China. Precursors of the more familiar present-day taijiquan 太極拳 and qigong 氣功, these forms of martial arts techniques focus on the inward cultivation of qi 氣 and other apparently ineffable energies of the body. They revolve around the harnessing of “internal strength” or neigong 內功. These notions of a strength derived from an invisible, intangible, yet embodied qi came to represent a significant counterweight to sports, exercise science, the Physical Culture movement, physiology, and other Western ideas of muscularity and the body that were being imported into China at the time. What role would such competing discourses of the body play in shaping contemporary ideas of embodiment? How would it raise the stakes in an era already ideologically charged with the intertwined issues of nationalism and imperialism, and so-called scientific modernity and indigenous tradition? This study is an inquiry into the epistemological and ontological ramifications of the idea of neigong internal strength, tracing the popular spread of the idea and its impact in late Qing and Republican China vernacular discourse.

    The Resurgence of East Asia 500, 150 and 50 year perspectives Edited by Giovanni Arrighi, Takeshi Hamashita and Mark Selden The Resurgence of East Asia East Asian expansion since the 1960s stands out as a global power shift with few historical precedents. The Resurgence of East Asia examines the rise of the region as one of the world’s economic power centers from three temporal perspectives: 500 years, 150 years and 50 years, each denoting an epoch in regional and world history and providing a vantage point against which to assess contemporary developments. The three perspectives each have something valuable to offer to the understanding of the present rise of East Asia and the modern world system, and their combination offers a contrast to the national and global studies that have recently dominated the literatures of development and globalization. In offering a comprehensive understanding of the present East Asian dynamic in light of the region’s historical heritage, the authors present several alternative hypotheses about the ongoing East Asian renaissance, whose plausibility remains to be assessed in the light of unfolding evidence. This collection is a valuable resource for students of Asian and world history, international politics, comparative and historical sociology and Asian studies. Giovanni Arrighi is Professor of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland.     Drinking Tea in St John’s: A Study of Diasporic Chinese Tea Drinking and Ethnic Identity By Qian Huang A Thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies In partial fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Masters of Folklore Department of Folklore, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2019 St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador Abstract Although tea has been an important part of Chinese people’s lives for thousands of years, and is often taken along by Chinese tea-lovers when they move to Canada, little attention has been paid to the tea culture of Chinese immigrants in North America, especially from a folkloristic perspective. This thesis, therefore, explores Chinese tea culture by taking St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador as the research location. Drawing on historical sources, recorded interviews, and participant observation, this study shows that Chinese residents of St John’s negotiate two different tea cultures. By placing their traditional tea drinking practices and the local tea drinking customs into different categories of their food system, Chinese immigrants and students use tea drinking to help define and construct their Chinese identity in the multi-ethnic context of St John’s. Through an analysis of Chinese tea, this thesis hopes to contribute to the study of Chinese foodways and to further the understanding of cultural ethnicity in North America more generally. Based on the exploration of existing studies of critical geopolitics, in this thesis I first argue that this body of literature only presents a partial picture of the world from the perspective of political geographies.
