> “One night only” events and Les Nuits Capitales Paris is the city that gave birth to an event called La Nuit Blanche (Sleepless Night) which has since spread to Rome, Amsterdam and Toronto. For an entire night, on the first Saturday of October, works of art, screenings and installations by contemporary artists are on display throughout the city. Some are installed in the open air and others allow the public to discover particular venues open especially for the event (Église Saint-Eustache, Monnaie de Paris, Catacombes...). The festivities last from 7pm to 7am and various trails are organized by theme or by area. Another similar event takes place in May every year: La Nuit des Musées (Museum Night). The city’s museums stay open all night, free of charge, offering culture lovers the unusual experience of visiting the Musée de la Chasse at 1 in the morning, or the Cité de l’Architecture by torchlight! Music is celebrated on the 21 June every year when groups and orchestras take to the streets until the early hours of the morning. Certain areas are pedestrianized and bars open their doors to musicians... Over the years, this event has become a veritable festival institution, with the young and the young-at-heart strolling streets filled with music, which often conti- nues throughout the night... The event is like a second New Year’s Eve but takes place outside in the summer heat. Since 2010, Les Nuits Capitales have demonstrated the nocturnal energy and spirit of the city with 5 special nights, where over 50 venues and 500 artists come together and offer entertainment to the public. A pass allows you easy access to the bars, clubs and concert halls participating in the event and a fringe programme has even developed on the side. La Nuit Blanche programme can be consulted on paris.fr one month prior to the event. www.fetedelamusique.culture.fr www.nuitdesmusees.culture.fr www.nuitscapitales.com

> Rock concerts and the alternative scene The Parisian rock scene is thriving; proved by the numerous indie, punk, new wave and metal bars all over the city. Many have weekly concerts, often underground. Le Scopitone, opened in 2009, Le Tigre, La Bellevilloise and La Flèche d’Or are the leading concert halls for the quality and variety of their programming. The Bus Palladium now offers a new deal: rock concerts for the first part of the evening, followed by clubbing. Although reservations are often advisable; La Bellevilloise is a place for a drink or dinner before attending one of their programmed concerts, which often put a spotlight on new and upcoming groups. As for the alternative scene, the choice ranges from the more general venues such as La Flèche d’Or or Le Nouveau Casino, to venues like La Boule Noire with a more marked alternative identity. Experimental rock and the renowned Sonic Protest Festival have made les Voûtes in the 13th arrondissement one of their main venues. > Around Jaurès and the canals at La Villette The areas around Jaurès-Stalingrad and the north of the 19th arrondissement are undergoing a facelift and are fast becoming a multi-cultural, green and reasonably-priced destination. The new generation youth hostel, Christopher’s Inn, opened in 2008, is the new gathering place for young people. The hostel’s innovative architec- ture was designed by Chaix and Morel. At the bar, Belushi’s, young people from all over the world exchange tips and recommendations with other tourists visiting Paris and are often joined here in the evenings, by locals, as well as at the Bellerive and the Péniche Antipode along the quays of the Seine. By day, it is possible to follow the canal de l’Ourcq on Vélib’ (there are special offers for 14-26 year olds) as far as the Parc de la Villette and the Cité de la musique. Le CENTQUATRE has become the not-to-be-missed venue: this former funeral home now houses Paris’s latest cultural spot and site of the festival Jeune Création. The space holds workshops, fairs and exhibitions by the artists in residence throughout the year, as well as an Emmaüs charity shop laid out like an apartment. There’s even a pizza van if you’re feeling hungry! Last but not least, the canal Saint-Martin and the quays of the Seine are the place to stroll on sunny, summer days. Starting at the Point Ephémère, a concert hall with a bar and artist residency programmes that welcome some of the city’s younger talents, stroll along the locks of the canal Saint-Martin, gaze at Arletty’s legendary Hôtel du Nord and sit on the canal banks with a baguette and some saucisson (sausage) for an aperitif as the sun goes down.
