World Marriage Day, held each year on the second Sunday in February, honors the lifelong commitment of husband and wife. World Marriage Day activities such as our Parish’s Blessing of Couples and Couple’s Dinner, provide the visible sign of support couples need to continue to make the daily decision to love one another.

In these changing times Catholics excited that the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops published a pastoral letter on marriage in November 2009 placing more emphasis on the important Sacrament of Matrimony.

All are encouraged that you will review the information on the USCCB website. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (www.usccb.org) continues to place emphasis on the importance of the Sacrament of Matrimony in the life of the church today through the www.foryourmarriage.org website. We encourage all to view the ―For Your Marriage‖ website and go to the USCCB website (www.usccb.org) to download, read and incorporate the Pastoral Letter into our daily lives.

Twenty eight years ago, Worldwide Marriage Encounter began encouraging a celebration of marriage on the second Sunday of February. In 1983 it was designated World Marriage Day as a day to honor the husband and wife as head of the family, the basic unit of society. It sa- lutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life.

PRAYER FOR OUR MARRIAGE

Heavenly Father, We thank you for your tremendous gift of the Sacrament of Marriage. Enable us to grow in our intimacy with You and with each other. Teach us the beauty of forgiveness so we may become more and more one in heart, mind and body. Strengthen our communication with each other, and help us to be examples of commitment, love and service to our and children. Make us a sign of the unity which Jesus prays for at the Last Supper. We open ourselves to the guidance of Your Holy Spirit, who empowers us to love in Jesus’ name and walk in His footsteps. Amen. 10 Pointers for Prayer in Your Marriage

The baby’s crying, the dog is whining, and you need to leave for work in five minutes. Finding time for prayer can seem impossible. Amid the busyness of family life, how can one respond to God’s ongoing invitation to speak with and listen to Him? Here are ten pointers to help you do just that.

1. Pray as you can, not as you can’t. God calls most Christians to an active life in the world, with family, work and community responsibilities. Such a call, while holy, does not usually allow for long periods of prayer and reflection. Lay people can become discouraged when they try to pray like a cloistered contemplative. Be realistic about what’s possible.

2. Take ten — or twenty. If a half hour for prayer isn’t possible, how about ten minutes, or twenty? Choose a good time of day and stick with it. Designate a special site for prayer so that spot become holy. Spouses can help by mind- ing children during respective quiet times.

3. Pray as a family. Build upon rituals such as grace before meals. In addition to the usual ―Bless us, O Lord…,‖ en- courage family members to offer thanks for the blessings of the day, as well as prayers for those in need. Couples can deepen their spiritual relationship by taking a few minutes, perhaps before bedtime, to commend to God the joys and sorrows of the day.

4. Decorate your domestic church. When we enter our parish church, the statues and pictures focus our minds on Jesus, Mary and the saints. We can create an atmosphere for prayer in our home- the domestic church- by displaying a crucifix, icons, the Bible and other holy objects. Take the children to a religious goods store and let them choose a pic- ture or statue for their rooms.

5. Short prayers count, too. When you’re stopped at a long light or put on hold, consider it as God’s invitation to turn your heart and mind to him, if only for a few seconds.

6. Find God at work. Connecting with God in the workplace takes effort. Try to cultivate a few simple habits. For example, offer the day to God as you turn on your computer, or pray for the person you’re about to call or wait upon.

7. Jump start your prayer life. Sooner or later almost everyone experiences dryness in prayer. God seems far away and prayer becomes a burden. Praying with Scripture, perhaps the daily Mass Readings can help us focus. So, too, can an inspirational book, especially one of the spiritual classics. A good choice is St. Francis de Sales’ Introduction to the Devout Life, written specifically for lay people who are striving for holiness.

8. Ask your Mother for help. The Blessed Virgin Mary, our spiritual mother, understands our needs and offers pro- found comfort. One family, gathered around the bedside of their dying husband and father, found peace and healing through the recitation of the rosary. The rosary is ideal for the family since children can be taught the simple prayers at an early age. Check out instructions on how to pray the Rosary.

9. Read a good story. Children and adults alike enjoy an inspiring story, and few stories are more compelling than those of the saints. Whether it’s the little way of Therese of Lisieux or the heroism of Maximilian Kolbe, their stories offer something for everyone. Consider the particular virtue that a saint demonstrates and pray for help to emulate it. Perhaps it’s the humility of St. Francis of Assisi, the patience of St. Monica, or the courageous witness of St. Thomas More.

10. Walk with a spiritual friend. Prayer can lead to new thoughts and questions. Who better to share them with than a spiritual friend? A friend can help us to work through the concerns that inevitably arise in prayer. Good friends will hold each other accountable for their prayer life, making sure that prayer has not been neglected in the busyness of life. For married couples a spouse is often this spiritual friend, but God will also put wise and holy people in our path when we need them. They can be the answer to prayer. Over 200 people attended the Consecration Mass of Stella Ma- ris at 4:00 pm last Saturday, Feb- ruary 5th. Archbishop Allen Vigneron was presiding, assisted by his secretary, Fr. Charles Fox. Priests concelebrating were Fr. Paul Ballien, Fr. Mike Molnar, and Fr. James Teeling. They were assisted on the altar by Dea- con Joe Biggs, Brother Damian, Joe Mascarenhas, and a number of altar boys.

Special guests were the Deputy Premier, Mrs. Juliana O’Connor- Connolly, and Sister Islands MLA Moses Kirkconnell. There were also a number of overseas visitors, friends and family members of the late Msgr. John Meaney.

The combined choir (St. Ignatius, Christ the Redeemer and Stella Maris) was ably led by Albert Chin. Soloists were Krista Wight, Quincy Brown, and Anita Wheaton.

During the mass both the Archbishop and the Deputy Premier made several references to Stella Maris - Star of the Sea, and the connection to Cayman’s seafaring heritage. They reminded the congregation that the church will serve as a light for the local community.

Fr. Paul gave the vote of thanks, ensuring that Elie Kozaily (designer), Todd Davey-Executive Homes (contractor), and Arney and Janet Scott (family land acquired for the project) all received proper recognition.

Many parishioners from Grand Cayman were in attendance, including 122 who traveled over on the charter for the day. The group enjoyed an island tour which included stops at the Cayman Brac Museum, the Stake Bay Chapel, and Long Beach. All enjoyed a delicious lunch buffet at the Brac Reef Beach Resort and a nice re- ception after the mass at the Alexander Hotel. A number of other parishioners spent a few days in the Brac, en- joying the relaxed atmosphere.

The 3355 square foot church sits on the bluff off Alta Vista Drive in Cotton Tree Bay. The entire site is on 1.8 acres, and it includes 48 paved parking spaces and a 3000 gallon cistern.

Stella Maris will have Mass (when a priest is on island) or Eu- charistic services each Sunday at 11:00 am. Other special events will be announced through the bulletin and/or the parish website. Many more photos of the special day will be available soon on the parish website and on a DVD that Joe Mascarenhas is preparing. For further information on Stella Maris, please contact 948-2271 or 916-1687.

THANK YOU FROM THE STELLA MARIS CONGREGATION!

The Stella Maris Congregation would like to thank everybody at St. Ignatius and Christ the Redeemer, espe- cially the choir, for making the Stella Maris church dedication the most beautiful and special event we could have ever dreamt about. We feel truly blessed by the love you have all shown us by being with us; and oth- ers on Grand Cayman who were with us in prayer. We look at Stella Maris as the "Lighthouse" of Faith, ap- propriately located on the Bluff, waiting to welcome you to celebrate Mass with us.

With Love from the Stella Maris Congregation (Cayman Brac)
