JERSEY BOYS, LONDON—THREE YEARS on GOODBYE to STEPHEN ASHFIELD by Lynn Boleyn Lynn’s Pages - March 2011 JERSEY BOYS, LONDON—THREE YEARS ON GOODBYE TO STEPHEN ASHFIELD By Lynn Boleyn Jersey Boys London, now celebrating it’s third birthday, is still going as strong as ever since Opening Night on 18 March 2008. Last year saw two of the original cast members, Philip Bulcock and Glenn Carter, leave and so we were sorry to hear that a third original cast member, Stephen Ashfield, who plays Bob Gaudio, will be leaving the show this month. His replacement is Matthew Wycliffe. The good news, however, is that Glenn, Stephen and Philip have recently joined together as The Franks and they do an absolutely amazing ver- sion of The Night—this is just as good as the original. If you have not heard it yet check it out here:- http://www.myspace.com/thefranksonline/music/ songs/the-night-78544060 So we wish Stephen and The Franks all the very best and hope to see them at one of the cabaret shows in the future. Stephen’s replacement, Matthew Wycliffe, originally from Birmingham, is best known and has received high praise for his portrayal of Buddy Holly in the Buddy Holly Story. He has worn the famous black-rimmed glasses all over the world – and he even had the honour of performing with and in front of Buddy’s own family in Texas. So a very warm welcome to Matthew and we look forward to seeing you soon. You can check out Matthew’s web page here : http:// www.mattwycliffe.com/MattWycliffe.com/About.html Matthew Wycliffe Page 1 Lynn’s Pages - March 2011 CAST CHANGES AT JERSEY BOYS, LONDON Ryan Molloy, as we know is staying for another year, and we have recently heard that Jon Lee will also be joining the cast as Frankie Valli. Ryan will be doing 6 shows per week and Jon, who played Marius in Les Miserables, will be doing two shows. Jon will also be covering Ryan’s holidays. Remembered by many as part of the pop band S Club 7, Jon starred in four television series, a film and won two Brit awards and Record of The Year as part of the band, with record sales spanning over 13 million! You can read an interview with Jon Lee here about his new role. http://tinyurl.com/6br8xg8 The new cast members joining this month are: Matthew Wycliffe (Bob Gaudio), Wayne Smith (Bob Crewe), Rachael Wooding (Mary Delgado), Carl Au (Joe Pesci), Lauren Hall (Francine), Jo Servi (Barry Belson), Chris Gardner (Hank Ma- Jon Lee jewski), and Jake Samuels (Norm Waxman), as well as Trina Hill and Tom Oakley. Co-writer Marshall Brickman says he expects the film version of Jersey Boys is likely to be released by the fall of 2013. The breaking news is reported on the latest Jersey Boys blog and full details can be read here: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-03-08/scene-last-night-alan-patricof-lewis-cullman-cavett-balaban- brickman.html Page 2 Lynn’s Pages - March 2011 Frankie Valli's Meatball Recipe The Las Vegas cast of Jersey Boys celebrated National Meatball Day on March 9 with "Frankie Valli's Meatball Recipe." The cast was put to the test to see how well they could perform outside of the theatre — and in the kitchen! Cast members taught viewers of "The Morning Blend" on ABC in Las Vegas how to make the delicious recipe — Jersey style. Be sure to check out the recipe below! If you are very rich please allow 30 minutes beforehand to remove your jewelry! We also understand that Frankie, who’s weakness is pasta, is plan- ning a line of Italian sauces so hopefully he will let us have details of these so we can add them to the meatballs too! Frankie Valli’s Meatball Recipe A “whole-lotta” fresh breadcrumbs (about 1½ cups) About 1 cup milk (warm) 1 lb. ground beef ½ lb. ground pork or veal ½ cup freshly grated parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 2 teaspoons kosher salt ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 teaspoons dried oregano About 2 cloves of minced garlic 1 extra-large egg, beaten Step 1: Remove all jewelry, especially rings – wash hands Step 2: Soak breadcrumbs in warm milk for a few minutes Step 3: Add the remaining ingredients and Photograph by Emily Shur combine with jewelry-free , clean hands Step 4: Roll mixture into sizeable balls (about 2 inches in diameter) Step 5: Brown meatballs well in frying pan with olive oil — finish cooking in a simmering pan of Italian gravy (i.e. tomato sauce) Step 6: Serve meatballs (garnish with parsley, freshly grated parmesan) over pasta with a piece of crusty bread on the side You can also check out the video below of the cast from The Palazzo making the meatballs: https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10150167647804384 Page 3 Lynn’s Pages - March 2011 New Double CD—Coming Soon Tracks: Disc 1 Disc 2 Who Loves You Sherry Once Inside A Woman's Heart Dawn (Go Away) Marlena Silence Is Golden Expression Of Love Rag Doll Girl Come Running Let's Hang On Just The Way You Make Love Walk Like a Man Beggin' Big Girls Don't Cry Easily Bye Bye Baby (Baby Goodbye) The Night Working My Way Back To You Lady Put The Light Out Opus 17 (Don't You Worry 'bout Me) Earth Angel December 1963 (Oh What A Night) Walk Away Renee Candy Girl Fallen Angel My Eyes Adored You My Prayer I Got You Under My Skin By The Time I Get To Phoenix The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore) In My Eyes Breaking Up Is Hard To Do Anyone Who Had A Heart Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow You're Ready Now Grease Sunny Can't Take My Eyes Off You This Time Ronnie A detailed review and fans reaction will be available at ‘That ‘Four Seasons’ Sound blog asap Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons Working My Way Back To You Due for release on the 25 April 2011 Full details at: http://www.play.com/Music/CD/4-/17593929/Working-My-Way-Back-To- You-The-Frankie-Valli-The-Four-Seasons-Collection/Product.html? searchstring=Frankie+Valli&searchtype=allproducts&searchsource=0&urlrefer=search or http://www.amazon.co.uk/Working-My-Way-Back-You/dp/B004BGJXT8/ref=sr_1_14? s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1300276104&sr=1-14 March 2011 Page 4 .

  • An Isolated Tribe Emerges from the Rain Forest - the New Yorker
9/16/2016 An Isolated Tribe Emerges from the Rain Forest - The New Yorker A REPORTER AT LARGE AUGUST 8 & 15, 2016 ISSUE AN ISOLATED TRIBE EMERGES FROM THE RAIN FOREST In Peru, an unsolved killing has brought the Mashco Piro into contact with the outside world. By Jon Lee Anderson On the shore of the Madre de Dios River, in Peru, a group of Mashco Piro await observers sent by the Department of Native Isolated People. efore Nicolás (Shaco) Flores was killed, deep in the Peruvian rain forest, he had spent decades reaching out to the B mysterious people called the Mashco Piro. Flores lived in the Madre de Dios region—a vast jungle surrounded by an even vaster wilderness, frequented mostly by illegal loggers, miners, narco-traffickers, and a few adventurers. For more than a hundred years, the Mashco had lived in almost complete isolation; there were rare sightings, but they were often indistinguishable from backwoods folklore. Flores, a farmer and a river guide, was a self-appointed conduit between the Mashco and the region’s other indigenous people, who lived mostly in riverside villages. He provided them with food and machetes, and tried to lure them out of the forest. But in 2011, for unclear reasons, the relationship broke down; one afternoon, when the Mashco appeared on the riverbank and beckoned to Shaco, he ignored them. A week later, as he tended his vegetable patch, a bamboo arrow flew out of the forest, piercing his heart. In Peru’s urban centers, the incident generated lurid news stories about savage natives attacking peaceable settlers.

  • Steel Magnolias Oct 26 – Dec 15 Mcguire Proscenium Stage WELCOME
The Call Is Places 2019–2020 SUBSCRIBER NEWSLETTER Steel Magnolias Oct 26 – Dec 15 McGuire Proscenium Stage WELCOME From Artistic Director Joseph Haj SEASON 2019–2020 2019–2020 The Glass Menagerie Sept 14 – Oct 27, 2019 Dear Friends, Wurtele Thrust Stage Let me start with a confession: Before Steel Magnolias surfaced in our Steel Magnolias season planning discussions, I had never read the play, seen the play or Oct 26 – Dec 15, 2019 watched the famed 1989 film. Thankfully, I wasn’t alone. Our esteemed McGuire Proscenium Stage director Lisa Rothe and several members of our creative team were just as unfamiliar with this sharp-witted and irreverently funny group of Southern A Christmas Carol women. But the moment we immersed ourselves in the script and their Nov 12 – Dec 29, 2019 stories, we fell in love with each and every one of them, quirks and all. Wurtele Thrust Stage Robert Harling wrote the play as an homage to his late sister, Susan, Noura which explains the deep honor and care he gives to his “steel magnolias.” Jan 11 – Feb 16, 2020 McGuire Proscenium Stage I continue to be struck by how much these women love and care for each other despite their differences. They each have their own highs and lows, Twelfth Night but they face everything life throws at them together. That is the secret Feb 8 – March 22, 2020 to their strength, and, as Harling hints at in the title, that is what makes Wurtele Thrust Stage them flourish.
