In this paper, we argue and present evidence from vast research that VR is an excellent tool in engineering education. Through our review, we deduced that VR has positive cognitive and pedagogical benefits in engineering education, which ultimately improves the students’ understanding of the subjects, performance and grades, and education experience. In addition, the benefits extend to the university/institution in terms of reduced liability, infrastructure, and cost through the use of VR as a replacement to physical laboratories. There are added benefits of equal educational experience for the students with special needs as well as distance learning students who have no access to physical labs. Furthermore, recent reviews identified that VR applications for education currently lack learning theories and objectives integration in their design. -

J. Watson - Tokyo - Zurich Preface Service-Oriented Computing (SoC) is a dynamic new field of research, creating a paradigm shift in the way software applications are designed and delivered. SoC technologies, through the use of open middleware standards, enable collab- oration across organizational boundaries and are transforming the information- technology landscape. SoC builds on ideas and experiences from many different fields to produce the novel research needed to drive this paradigm shift. The IBM PhD Student Symposium at ICSOC provides a forum where doc- toral students conducting research in SoC can present their on-going dissertation work and receive feedback from a group of well-known experts. Each presentation is organized as a mock thesis-defense, with a committee of 4 mentors providing extensive feedback and advice for completing a successful PhD thesis. This for- mat is similar to the one adopted by the doctoral symposia associated with ICSE, OOPSLA, ECOOP, Middleware and ISWC. The closing session of the symposium is a panel discussion where the roles are reversed, and the mentors answer the students’ questions about research careers in industry and academia. The symposium agenda also contains a keynote address on writing a good PhD dissertation, delivered by Dr. Priya Narasimhan, Assistant Professor at Carnegie Mellon University and member of the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Committee. -

Abstract Two trends currently impacting higher education intersect in this study: (1) students with learning disabilities are enrolling in colleges and universities in increasing numbers, and (2) colleges and universities are increasingly relying on the web to provide services to students. This reliance on the “virtual campus” comes without apparent consideration of accessibility issues that may be experienced by students with learning disabilities. This study explored the experiences of 16 college students, self-identified as having learning disabilities, as they interacted with the virtual campus of one college. Consistent with the social model of disability, this study initially focused on the features of the virtual campus that were both helpful and not helpful to the informants as they performed eight tasks considered typical of those expected of a college student. Using a grounded theory methodology, the model that evolved from this data indicated that to understand the informants’ experiences, consideration had to be given also to what the informants brought to the experience, including their active choice and use of helpful strategies. -
